Bornacoola Club Notes – 16/08/17

Senior Championship

A hugely exciting Senior championship victory over Glencar/Manorhamilton in Shane Mc Gettigan Park on Saturday evening last got our campaign back on track after the disappointment of two early defeats in our group. After a promising start from Manor in which they dominated possession but squandered some decent chances, the Bors took over as the first half progressed and two goals, from Damian Moran and Philip Howard, as well as a series of excellent points put the Bors in a commanding half time position, 2-9 to 0-4 in front. It was a resurgent Manor as the second half begun and the early dismissal of Michael Duignan reducing Bornacoola to 14 players, aided their cause as they clawed back the lead with the aid of the breeze, eventually reducing it to just three points as the game entered its closing stages. However, a terrific point from Liam Mulligan only four minutes from time (Bornacoola’s first of the half) broke a run of 8 unanswered Manor points and steadied the Bornacoola ship. Manor again responded, but a late Philly Howard effort ensured the Bors hung on for an important 2-11 to 0-13 victory. We still need to win the remaining two games in the group – against Dromahair and Drumreilly – to have a chance of progressing to the quarter finals. Team on Saturday evening was Mark Mc Closkey, Brian Duffy, Jason Conroy, David Mulligan, Shane Conroy, Conor Mc Cauley, Liam Mulligan, Gary Mc Closkey, Michael Duignan, Damian Moran, Sean Mc Keon, Allan Croghan, Philip Howard, Ollie Vaughan, Trevor Howard. Subs used were Damien Mc Guinness, Brian Conroy and Ronan Mulligan

Official Opening

Our thanks to all who attended and helped out at the OfficialOur thanks to all who attended and helped out at the Official opening of our new clubhouse in Dromod on Sunday last. With the sun shining for most of the day, it was a wonderful day out for everyone involved and most especially the huge numbers of children in attendance. Our thanks to our special guests on the day including Connacht GAA President Mick Rock whose words in opening the centre hit a lovely chord, Leitrim GAA Chairman Terence Boyle and Gerry Mc Govern (Connacht Vice-President), Mayo All Star Cora Staunton, the ever excellent Tom Moran and DJ Damian Mc Guinness, as well as our direct line to the heavens, Fr Gerry. Sam Maguire also enjoyed his time in Leitrim and hopefully will be back to see us all soon. To the army of caterers too numerous to mention, a huge mile buíochas and also to Kevin and Peter for manning the Barbeque. Our resident photographer Alan Carney was joined by the Observers’ Wille Donlon on the day and both got some great shots of the occasion. Finally to our underage coaches who kept the on-field entertainment flowing throughout the day. Well done to you all. Full list of sports results to follow and you can see all the pictures from the big day on our Facebook page.
