Bornacoola GAA Club Notes 03/07/2018

Ladies League Final – Congratulations to the Bornacoola/St Mary’s Ladies who captured the Division 3 League title after a titanic battle with Dromahair in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada on Sunday afternoon last. The girls prevailed by a point on a 2-9 to 3-5 scoreline. This is the girls’ second title since they formed last year, having won the Junior Championship last season. It was a great final that had all that you could wish for from top-class goalkeeping from Caroline Guckian, excellent defending and some great football played on the break going forward, and of course, the result was in doubt until the referee’s final whistle. While our girls got out of the blocks early with a Sarah Reynolds goal, it was the Dromahair ladies who grabbed a hold of the contest and by the end of the first quarter held a four-point advantage. However after a storming second quarter with some fine points from Aisling Leahy, Kelly Howard and Sarah Reynolds they entered the halftime interval on level terms, Bornacoola/St Mary’s 1-5 Dromahair 2-2. The second half was end-to-end stuff and there appeared to be nothing to separate two evenly matched teams. After Hannah Reynolds goaled to open a four-point advantage with ten to play, it appeared that perhaps our girls were making a winning break. However, Dromahair fought back to level and in the dying moments, Kelly Howard popped over the winner. It was a memorable victory for the girls and well deserved for their efforts all spring. Well done ladies. On duty on Sunday were: Caroline Guckian, Cora McCauley, Kathy Butler, Joanne McGushin, Enya Guckian, Lorraine Guckian, Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen, Sara Crowe, Aisling Leahy (0-5), Hannah Reynolds (1-0), Sarah Reynolds (1-1), Kelly Howard (0-3), Lisa Guckian, Rachel McGarry, Lauren Hackett, Hannah Bird and Ellen Woods.

Leitrim Game – Unfortunately no joy for Benny Guckian and his charges against Monaghan on Saturday last; however it was a great occasion and Leitrim certainly didn’t let themselves down and this young team will have learned a great deal from the experience. Well done to Damian Moran who finished Championship 2018 with 0-9 to his name and of course to our own U9’s who starred in the halftime game in front of a crowd of over 4,600 people. Maith sibh go léir; Liatroim abú!
