APOLOGY

In last week’s notes, we incorrectly stated that the Halloween trail was starting at 8 pm. Please note that it’s starting at 6 pm. For an experience never to be forgotten be in Cloone at 6 pm. It promises to be an unforgettable experience.

HISTORY CORNER

Having completed the playing activity on the pitch we now turn our attention to a little bit of history. Notes from the archives show that in 1970 Cloone GAA held their Annual Dinner Dance on the 27th of December and was attended by 186 guests. On January 7th the club held a very successful concert for Parochial funds and the proceeds amounted to £ 53. At a meeting of Leitrim Co Board held in Drumkeerin on 22 of February 1971, the Cloone senior team were relegated from Senior to the Intermediate championship, a competition in which only two teams played, i.e. Cloone and Melvin Gaels. The records show that Cloone were represented at that Co Board meeting by Sean Cooke, who provided the transport and a G McGovern. Cloone were grouped for the league with Carrick, Glencar Manor, St Aidan’s Gortletteragh, and Aughnasheelin. The 1971 league started on Sunday, March 7th and the following team represented Cloone on the first league outing of that year. Willie Mitchell, Kevin Foley, Pat Beirne Kevin Lennon, GerryMoran, Peadar Moran, Sean Smith, Jim McCabe, Tommy McNamee, Kieran Brennan, Mattie Joe Lennon, Damian Brennan, Gerry Tiernan (RIP) Gerry McGovern, Kevin Moran. The Cloone full forward had a torrid afternoon against a very prominent member of the Leitrim County Senior team of that year, and even though Cloone only had the required fifteen players, he says that he played the entire game in fear of being taken off. For all the local historians, who did Cloone play that day? Where was the game played? And who was the referee? No doubt you all know the answers. Answers on a postcard, please. Answers published next week. More to follow.

CLOONE GAA NOTES.

CHAMPIONSHIP DEFEAT.

We exited the Fox Memorials Leitrim Intermediate Championship on Saturday evening last in Dromad going down to Drumkeerin on a score line of Drumkeerin 0 11 Cloone  0 10. The winning point coming with the last kick of the game. Leading by 06 to 01 in the first half it will probably be remembered as a game we could, and should have won. Injuries to key players certainly did not help our cause, and probably contributed to our downfall. On a week of heavy rainfall we must compliment the Bornacoola Gaa Club on the excellent standard of the pitch on Saturday evening last, and also on their recently opened marvellous new facility.

CLOONE GAA NOTES.
On Saturday last we drew with Mohill’s second team in the FOX Memorials Leitrim Intermediate
football Championship played in Carrigallen, on a score line of Mohill 1 11 Cloone 0 14. We are now
through to the quarter final against Drumkeerin. This game will be played in the excellent grounds of
Leitrim Gaels Gaa at 5 P.M. on this Saturday evening. We urge all supporters to rally behind the team
and hopefully we can get a result on Saturday evening. Best of luck to the team and management.
This is another phase in a championship system in Leitrim Gaa that personally I’m not a fan of.

CLOONE GAA NOTES.
WE had a very busy weekend of activities starting on Thursday evening with the historic first ever
Thursday evening game played in the Leitrim championship. It was very interesting to note that this
fixture received notable criticism in the local media. Contrary to the criticism, it has to be applauded
that two clubs in Leitrim can agree to play a championship game on a Thursday night. Well done to
both clubs. The criticism was totally unjustified and came from somebody that didn’t know what
they were talking about. In relation the Author’s family playing with Leitrim, or being asked to play
with Leitrim they will probably follow in the author’s footsteps and continue to play their football in
Dublin. I’m not aware that they are on any inter County manager’s list, but probably Jim Gavin will
have first call. It’s a pity that people who don’t know what they are talking about would refrain from
making a fool of themselves on a subject that they have turned their back on.

CHAMPIONSHIP.
Well done to team on a fantastic performance on Sunday last beating Killtubrid in round two of the
Leitrim Intermediate championship. This was a fantastic result and a credit to everybody involved.
Our next game is on Saturday next V Glenfarne Kiltyclogher on Saturday evening next in Ballinamore.

Bon VOYAGE
We wish the very best to star player Mark Creegan who heads off to Debuai on Friday next. Mark
will be a huge loss to our team and has given everything to the club over the last number of years
Enjoy your travels Mark.

CHAMPIONSHIP. .Another busy championship weekend this week end starting with Ballinamore
Sean o Heslins versus Aughawillian on Friday night. A Great game in prospect.
