Big Gaels Night – Melvin Gaels big fundraising night on Saturday January 12th in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, “The Harte of the Matter”, will feature special guests, Mickey Harte, Aiden  O’Mahoney, Caroline Currid, Rory Gallagher and Brian Mc Eniff and others and will explore and delve into the GAA in the past, the present and the future. There will be a huge raffle which will include signed county jerseys from Leitrim, Donegal, Tyrone, Sligo, Kerry and much much more! While it’s a fundraiser for the community pitch and ongoing club costs it’s an event that any GAA fan may like to attend. Let’s all make this a night to remember for the town and the surrounding areas. The event will be hosted by Colin Regan.

Presentation of medals to the Melvin Gaels Under 20 County Championship winning team will take place on the night and any player due to get a medal is asked to contact Club Chairman, Liam Freeburn at 086 3882077 to arrange tickets at a reduced rate.

Big GAA Event – Put the 12th of January 2019 in your diary as this is when the Club will host a major GAA event in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran. There will be many well-known people from the GAA  and others taking part. Tickets for the event will be on sale from Friday next. Concussion Management – Updated Concussion Management Guidelines for Gaelic Games for your reference. This is the first time there is a common guidelines document between the three associations which will help with awareness and promotion of the key messages and recommendations in relation to concussion identification, treatment and return to play protocols. The guidelines, including other complimentary resources are also available on https://learning.gaa.ie/Concussion  An awareness and education campaign will be rolled out by all three associations in 2019.

The Late David Clancy – There was shock and sadness in the Club and wider community at the news of the sad and tragic death of David Clancy, Agharrow, Tullaghan last week. David played for Melvin Gaels and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The Club extends deepest sympathy to all David’s family, relatives and many friends. May he rest in peace.

Under 20 Champions – A great day for the Under 20 team on Sunday when they defeated St Manchan’s to win the first Under 20 A Final.  This was a hard fought but deserved win. Although the game was close and the lead changed a number of times the Gaels never gave up and finished strongly. This is a fantastic way to finish 2018 and these young lads have done the Club proud. Congratulations to Darragh Rooney who won the Mat of the Match award. Well done to all the mentors, Gareth, Liam, Joe and Peter.  Great work by everyone involved. Thanks to all who came along and gave support and all who gave the team such a great welcome home.

Club AGM – There was a good attendance at the AGM on Sunday evening, and after winning the Under 20 Championship earlier in the day, the atmosphere was good. The election of officers resulted in a number of new people appointed to different positions in the Club. The new Chairman is Liam Freeburn with Pat Gallagher as Vice Chairman. Mark Cleary is remaining as Club Secretary and Mary Mc Sharry as Club Registrar and assistant. Tina Whelan is taking up the position of Club Treasurer. Katherine Williams has stepped down as Treasurer, but will do assistant Treasurer for this year. Maria Foley was appointed PRO for the Club. Martin Mc Carron is remaining as Children’s Officer. The outgoing officers were thanked for all the hard work they put in during the year gave a detailed account of all activities during the year.

Under 20 Championship Final – After another great win and another great performance, against Leitrim Gaels, the Under 20 lads are in the Championship Final next Sunday (Nov 25th) in Pairc Sean at 12noon. They take on St Manachan’s. This group of players have played some great football in the games so far, but will have to put in another good display on Sunday next to win it out. They have done the Club proud and we wish them and their mentors good luck in the Final. They will need a good support, so come along to Pairc Sean on Sunday.

Under 20 Championship Quarter Final – Congratulations and well done to all the players and mentors of the Under 20 team when they won the Championship Quarter Final against Glencar/ Manorhamilton on Sunday last in Bundoran. The Gaels played some great football from the throw-in to the final whistle and were always in control and finished up winning comfortably. Under 15 Final – A great performance from the Melvin Gaels Under 15s in the Championship Final in Carrick on Shannon was not enough to get the better of Gortletterragh on Sunday last. The Club can be very proud of this group of young lads who played so well all through this championship and performed so well in the final up until the last few minutes. Well done to all the players and mentors. No doubt this group of players will learn a lot from the experience of their achievements this year.

Under 20 Quarter Final – The Under 20 team will start the Championship next Sunday morning at the Quarter Final stage with a home game against neighbours Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday at 11am and will be played on Bundoran pitch. Good luck to all involved.

Underage Presentation – There was a fantastic crowd at the underage presentation in the Community Centre on Sunday evening. All players and coaches, at all ages, were acknowledged for their achievements during the year. The Under 17s were presented with their Championship medals.  Congratulations to all.  Thanks to the Special Guests, Terry Hyland, Leitrim Manager, Shauna Hamilton, Fermanagh Star and our own Leitrim County players, Emlyn and Killian. Under 15s in the Final – Congratulations to the Under 15s on the great performance against St Joseph’s on Saturday last, in Carrick on Shannon, which now sees them in the Championship Final. The final score was Melvin Gaels 3-10, St Joseph’s 3-8. This group of lads have performed very well all through the championship and have done the club proud. Melvin Gaels Underage Presentation –Due to Under 15s playing in the Championship Final against Gortletterragh at 12noon on Sunday next November 4th in Drumshanbo the Underage presentation will now take place at 5pm on that day in the Community Centre. This presentation is for all underage players.

Connacht Minor B Championship – Hard luck to the minor team in the Connacht Championship in Ballyhaunis last Friday night. They were beaten by Tourlestrane on a scoreline of Melvin Gaels 0-8, Tourlestrane 2-6.

Connacht Minor B Championship –  Our U17’s will be competing in the Connacht GAA Minor B Championship Quarter Final this Friday 26th October against Tourlestrane at the Connacht GAA Centre’ Ballyhaunis. Throw in 7pm. This team will be a mix of mainly the current U17 squad plus some minors who still qualify for this age group. A  bus will be organised to the Minor Championship game if there is enough interest and demand. €10 per person return. Under 15s in Semi Final – Well done to our U15 team on a fantastic win against Ballinamore on Saturday last. Final score Melvin Gaels 6.11 Ballinamore 4.08

The U15 boys have now qualified for the championship semi-final. They will play St. Josephs on Saturday 27th October in Pairc Sean, Carrick-on-Shannon at 12 noon. Please give them a lot of support.

Healthy Club Conference – On Saturday 20th October, the annual Healthy Club Conference was held in Croke Park. The Healthy Club goal is to make GAA Clubs a hub for health and wellbeing in their community both on and off the field. Melvin Gaels were represented by Katherine Williams and Mary McSharry who are on the Melvin Gaels Healthy Club Committee. A key feature of the day-long event was the unveiling of the inaugural Healthy Club Heroes – a list of 23 club volunteers from across all four provinces who have gone over and above in their dedication and implementation of the Healthy Club project, and who have been nominated by their communities for special recognition for their hard work. Congratulations to Katherine Williams who received one of these awards. Awards were presented by Dublin footballer, Brian Fenton. The Healthy Club Conference was hosted and facilitated by Colin Regan GAA Health and Wellbeing Manager.

 

Congratulations Dearbhla – Congratulations, from all at Melvin Gaels, to Dearbhla Rooney on her fantastic achievement in boxing – winning a bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina .Well done Dearbhla.

Another Win for the Under 15s – The Under 15 team travelled to Drumkeerin on Saturday morning and came away with another great win in the Championship. Final score Drumkeerin 2-8, Melvin Gaels 6-15. Well done to all involved.

Congratulations – The Club would like to congratulate Aughawillan on the great win over Mohill in the Senior County Final on Sunday. Well done to Darragh Cleary and Lily Brennan who represented the Club at the County Finals!

Festival of Football – Brilliant morning at @LeitrimGAA for the Festival of Football with U9 teams from across the whole county. Despite awful weather conditions and a very early start from Kinlough there was a magnificent turnout from our boys and we thank sincerely all the families that travelled to Annaduff

Church Gate Collection – Thanks to everyone who supported the Club’s Church Gate Collection at the weekend and thanks to all who helped out.

The Late Jim Meehan – The Club extends deepest sympathy to the wife, family, relatives and many friends of the late Jim Meehan, Dromahair whose death took place last week. Jim was assistant County Treasurer and worked for many years with Leitrim GAA.  May he rest in Peace.

Presentation Night – The Club will hold the end of year Bord na nNog Presentation Night for all underage teams, boys and girls, to mark their commitment and participation all year. This will take place at 7.45pm on Friday November 2nd in Kinlough Community Centre. The night will be topped off with the presentation of Medals to our winning Boys U17 Team who won Leitrim U17 Championship 13-a-side trophy. Special Guests invited & Refreshments served. All underage players from U7s right up, along with their coaches and parents are asked to attend.

Development Project – Good news last week when it was announced that funding had been allocated to improve the Dressing Rooms and facilities. This is the second part of the overall project.
