History Part 3

In response to last week’s quiz, Sean Doherty was first in with the right answers. The game was against Gortletteragh, the County Champions of 1970 and the game was played in the Grange. Next in the trilogy, was a game played on Sunday, March 28th, 1971, in what would now be considered an away game. The game is remembered for activities off the playing field, more so than the quality of football played. The motto was all shoulders to the wheel, but in fact, it was limbs lower than the shoulder that became the dominant feature of the game. Our present sponsor played a blinder on the side line, and umbrellas were used for purposes that they were never intended for. Sure it was a day out for all the family and surely a day not to be forgotten. The Cloone team lined as follows: Paddy Kelly, Tommy McNamee Pat Beirne, Luke McNamee, Kevin Lennon, Peadar Moran, Gerry Moran, Jim McCabe Damian Brennan, Kieran Brennan, Mattie Joe Lennon Bertie Scanlon, Sean Smith, Tommy Derwin (RIP) Timmy Beirne. Subs used Willie Mitchel for Sean Smith. We were really upmarket back then, as we had a meal for the team after the game, which cost £ 17.00. Even before the advent of the GPA or the CPA, weren’t we really extravagant. Now, where was the match played, who were the opposition, and who was the referee? I can name one umpire, who got a serious lecture from the referee about his impartiality.

At that time we seemed to run league games and concerts in tandem, as that night we hosted the Drumreilly players in Doherty’s hall, and the proceeds amounted to £32.00. At least we more than broke even for the day.Now the Cloone GAA notes office was in a little bit  of a quandary this weekend, as to the name of the play by the Drumreilly playgroup, but following great and indeed intensive work by our research team we can now reveal that the name of the play was the hilarious Tom Coffey 3 act comedy “Anyone Can Rob a Bank”. Having spent £ 17.00 on a meal, no doubt the minds of the Cloone officials that evening was seriously focused on banking matters and were hoping to get some inspiration from the play. Next week we hope to feature some underage history.

HALLOWEEN TRAIL

Once again our Halloween trail was a fantastic success with huge crowds participating. It was no doubt one of the best to date with people coming from far and near. The response was phenomenal, and the comments afterwards were so rewarding to hear. The club would like to thank everybody who gave freely of their time to participate in the activities on the trail and to frighten the daylights of all and sundry, also to the stewards who manned the roads ,to everyone who helped out in any way, and most importantly to the people who came from far and near to participate. It was a fantastic occasion and sincere thanks to everybody.

FITTEST FAMILIES

With the return of the T.V. programme, The Fittest Family now back on our TV screens, we in Cloone could now be in a position to boast of our fittest Community. On Sunday last our Community were represented at the Dublin City Marathon by, Damian Kelly, Philip Charles, Eugene and Veronica McNamara, Eileen and Aidan Donohue, Peter Logan, Keith Conefrey, and Paul McNamara. Congratulation and well done to all our local participants.
