INTERMEDIATE LADIES – Bornacoola/St Mary’s were back in action on Friday evening last as they took on Fenagh in their second match in the excellent Aughavas facilities. Having won their first match comfortably, this turned out to be a much more competitive affair with the girls eventually prevailing on a 1-10 to 1-5 final scoreline. Despite Sarah Reynolds hitting the back of the net in the very early stages, the Fenagh girls were not to be deterred and served their intent with some fine scores from play throughout the half. Indeed, the first half was very evenly matched, and a late penalty converted by the Fenagh ladies saw the teams enter the half-time interval on level terms 1-4 each. On the resumption, our girls played with renewed determination and greater pace and with the defence holding the opposition to a solitary point over the half hour, they added six points to their total to establish the match-winning margin after a highly competitive and enjoyable championship match played in an excellent spirit by both teams. Well done to the girls on their efforts so far in this championship season which have guaranteed a semi-final place with two group matches remaining against St. Francis and Mohill later this month. On duty on Friday evening last were: Kathy Butler, Hannah Reynolds, Jasmine Maye, Joanne McGushin, Enya Guckian, Lorraine Guckian (0-1), Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen (0-1), Sara Crowe, Aisling Leahy (0-4), Rachel McGarry, Sarah Reynolds (1-0), Kelly Howard (0-4), Lisa Guckian, Hannah Farrell, Isabelle Chandler and Ellen Woods.

U12 GIRLS – Well done to our U12 girls’ team and management on retaining their county title on Monday in epic fashion.  Once again, the girls showed their never say die attitude and it paid off in the end, winning by the narrowest of margins.  This group of girls has come such a long way in such a very short space of time.  While each of the girls on the field worked tirelessly credit must also go to their equally dedicated teammates on the sideline who got behind the team from the very start to get them over the line. Hard luck to an excellent Manorhamilton team, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy as the teams couldn’t be separated in the group stages.  The final result was St. Mary’s 1.10, Manorhamilton 2.06.  Wishing Nicole Glancy who broke her wrist in a game last week a speedy recovery.  We hope to see Nicole back on the pitch playing again before too long.

The panel on the day was Emmanuella Olabiyi, Victoria Moore, Emily McGovern (0.01), Chloe Murphy, Kayleigh Earley, Mairead Lowe, Áine Morgan, Keelin Cronin (C), Emily Reynolds, Faith Lynott (0.01), Ellie Butler (1.03), Rebecca O’Neill (0.01), Ruby Lowe (0.01), Sarah Lowe (C) (0.01), Holly Corcoran, Nicole Glancy, Sarah McTiernan, Amber Hickey O’Flynn, Hannah Walsh, Micaela Gallagher (0.02), Hanora Brady, Holly Slevin, Caireann O’Grady, Caoimhe Doran, Chloe Costello, Lauren Deegan, Elodie Maye Gazzonet, Laura Faughnan, Tiffney Hughes, Urwah Imran, Mia Gately, Zara Cronin, Isabel Lowe

INTERMEDIATE LADIES – The Bornacoola/St Mary’s ladies were back in action on Sunday last in Ballinaglera as they took on Drumkeerin in their first Intermediate Championship group game and it was a winning start for the girls as they accounted for the opposition on a 5-15 to 1-9 scoreline after an entertaining hour’s football played in testing conditions as the temperature rose yet again. The girls were out of the blocks early and had three goals on the board during the first quarter which gave them a winning platform allied to very resolute defending which kept the raiding opposition at bay. Drumkeerin’s cause was not aided by an unfortunate knee injury to influential midfielder Bridget Gallagher which forced an early exit from the game and we wish her the very best in her recovery. The girls held a 4-9 to 0-6 interval lead and while the second half was very evenly contested, our ladies saw the game out to take the spoils in impressive fashion. Their next match in the group will be on the bank holiday weekend as they take on Fenagh with matches against St Francis and Mohill to follow. In action on Sunday last were: Caroline Guckian, Cora McCauley, Kathy Butler, Joanne McGushin, Enya Guckian, Lorraine Guckian, Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen (1-1), Sara Crowe (0-3), Aisling Leahy (2-1), Hannah Reynolds, Sarah Reynolds (1-1), Kelly Howard (1-6), Lisa Guckian (0-1), Hannah Farrell (0-2), Isabelle Chandler, Ellen Woods and Maeve Cryan.

U12 GIRLS – Best wishes to our 15 aside girls in the semi-final of the U12 competition, they play Keeldra Gaels tomorrow Tuesday 24th July at 7pm in Páirc Naomh Mhuire. Our 13 aside girls finished level on points with Ballinamore and Kiltubrid and were drew in a playoff with Ballinamore to battle it out for second and third place with Kiltubrid having a bye.    On Thursday 19th our girls met Ballinamore in Páirc Naomh Mhuire. It was a ferocious battle on the field with nothing between the two sides as both teams put on some fine displays of football. However, luck was on Ballinamore’s side and they took their scores very well to come away winners on the evening.  We are now into the B Q-Finals, please keep an eye on facebook for further games.

Best wishes to all the girls.

COMMUNITY GAMES –The Connaught Finals took place in Leitrim last Saturday and well done to our U10 Carrick Area boys team who beat Ballaghadereen in the semi-final of the U10 football.  They then came up against a very strong Oranmore team in the final and unfortunately, they were the better team on the day and ran out worthy winners. The St. Mary’s lads can be very proud of their achievement as they never gave up fighting until the final whistle, they are a credit to themselves and their club and we are all extremely proud of them reaching the Connaught Final.  Well done to the team and management and we wish Oranmore best wishes in the rest of the competition.

U12 CROSS BORDER LEAGUE CUP – We are very fortunate in St. Mary’s to be able to field two under 12 teams and to compete at the highest level with all boys getting plenty of game time throughout the season.

We reached the Division 1 and Division 4 Cross Border League Cup finals, with Clonguish our opponents for both games. The Division 1 game was played with fierce intensity on Sunday evening and we came away deserving winners after producing an all-round superb display of football.  We hoped for the same in the Division 4 final but unfortunately it was not to be.  Clonguish came out from the very start all guns blazing and produced some lovely football to secure the win. Well done to both teams and management.

JUNIOR LADIES LEAGUE FINAL – Congratulations to the Bornacoola/St Mary’s Ladies who captured the Division 3 League title after a titanic battle with Dromahair in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada on Sunday afternoon last. The girls prevailed by a point on a 2-9 to 3-5 scoreline. This is the girls’ second title since they formed last year, having won the Junior Championship last season. It was a great final that had all that you could wish for from top-class goalkeeping from Caroline Guckian, excellent defending and some great football played on the break going forward, and of course, the result was in doubt until the referee’s final whistle. While our girls got out of the blocks early with a Sarah Reynolds goal, it was the Dromahair ladies who grabbed a hold of the contest and by the end of the first quarter held a four-point advantage. However after a storming second quarter with some fine points from Aisling Leahy, Kelly Howard and Sarah Reynolds they entered the halftime interval on level terms, Bornacoola/St Mary’s 1-5 Dromahair 2-2. The second half was end-to-end stuff and there appeared to be nothing to separate two evenly matched teams. After Hannah Reynolds goaled to open a four-point advantage with ten to play, it appeared that perhaps our girls were making a winning break. However, Dromahair fought back to level and in the dying moments, Kelly Howard popped over the winner. It was a memorable victory for the girls and well deserved for their efforts all spring. Well done ladies. On duty on Sunday were: Caroline Guckian, Cora McCauley, Kathy Butler, Joanne McGushin, Enya Guckian, Lorraine Guckian, Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen, Sara Crowe, Aisling Leahy (0-5), Hannah Reynolds (1-0), Sarah Reynolds (1-1), Kelly Howard (0-3), Lisa Guckian, Rachel McGarry, Lauren Hackett, Hannah Bird and Ellen Woods.

PAT MURTAGH R.I.P – On Saturday evening we said farewell to a great clubman, our Club President Pat Murtagh. Pat was a legendary figure in our club all his life. He loved St. Mary’s GAA club and his legacy lives on through his family. Pat played a major role in all aspects of the development of St. Mary’s GAA, from a player to Chairman, to bringing players to and from training and games and was to the fore when we purchased our first grounds Páirc Ui Chearnaigh. Pat was often seen over the years keeping this pitch in order and nothing made him happier than to see youngsters on this field every evening.
Pat also threw himself into the development of underage football in the early seventies and many great St. Mary’s players learned their skills under the tutelage and patience of Pat who spent many hours coaching them.  He was extremely proud of all his family but took great pride in the fact that his Grandson Conor plays on our Senior team and his great-granddaughter Nicole is a prominent member on our U12 girls team.
Pat did not restrict himself to St. Mary’s and together with the late George O’Toole was involved in the development of Páirc Seán MacDiarmada into the fine stadium we have today. Pat always gave of his time freely and was a proud and loyal GAA man and it was only fitting that so many from the club turned out for the Guard of Honour to show their respect on Saturday evening.
Pre-deceased by his wife Tess and grandson Shane. Pat will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The club extends its deepest sympathies to his sons Sean and Jim, daughters Mary Glancy, Teresa Branagan (Castleknock Dublin), Carmel Kelly (Strokestown) and Ann Warnock, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, sister-in-law, his extended family, neighbours and many friends.

U14 LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONS – Last Friday evening our U-14 ladies lined out in Páirc Seán in the 15 a side championship final.  They faced a hotly fancied Glencar-Manorhamilton side who were aiming for the remarkable achievement of a 5th U-14 title in a row.   St. Mary’s had been comprehensively beaten by the Glencar-Manor side in the group stages but St. Mary’s were hopeful that they could redress the balance in the final.
St. Mary’s started strongly scoring 2 goals and a couple of points in quick succession in first 10 minutes.   Glencar-Manor were not going to sit back and after a sharp attack a high ball ended up in the back of the net.  This was followed by a point to narrow the gap.  The game continued in this vein with end to end play; however, the St. Mary’s defence worked exceptionally hard to absorb the Glencar Manor threat and went in at halftime with a healthy lead.
St. Mary’s again dominated the opening exchanges after the break and controlled the game for most of the second half.  They had opened up a 12 point lead going into the final five minutes of the game.  However, Glencar-manor showed their true spirit and never-say-die attitude by scoring 2-1 in the closing stages to narrow the gap to 5 points in the end.  However, St. Mary’s again showed their composure with players dropping back to crowd the defence, turn over the attacks and calmly extend the play down the field in order to relieve the pressure.  St Mary’s and Glencar Manorhamilton served up an excellent hour of football.  Both panels should be extremely proud of themselves. Well done to every girl on the St Mary’s panel.  They worked extremely hard over the course of the season and should all be very proud of themselves.  Thanks to the club for providing refreshments in the clubhouse after the game.
