AGM of Leitrim Hurling Board

At a well attended AGM of the Hurling Board held recently in The Bush Hotel, the new Cathaoirleach Joe Flynn and Rúnai Diarmuid Sweeney attended and pledged their support for Hurling within the County in the coming years

The three Officers Cathaoirleach Paddy Phelan, Rúnai Michael Doorigan and Cisteoir Martin Cunniffe were all re elected unanimously.

The meeting undertook to have more hurling games throughout the year and hoped that the inclusion of Michael Doorigan on the Fixtures committee will aid the smooth running of all competitions. The inclusion of hurling on the Master fixtures Plan will facilitate this also.

County Hurling (Cavan v Leitrim)

New Cavan Manager Brendan Nelligan enjoyed a winning debut at Breffni Park, helped by profligate Leitrim recording 15 wides.
With former London star Kevin Downes to the fore , Cavan opened up a 0-3 to 0-2 lead in the opening quarter.
Clement Cunniffe gave Leitrim a foothold but their limitations up front soon became all too obvious.
Cavans frontmen laboured initially before enjoying a 13-minute purple patch in which they notched 1-5 without reply.
However, four minutes after Mark McEntees 28th-minute goal for Cavan, Dave McGovern raised a green flag to give Leitrim hope.
But Cavan regained control and with Bernard Gaffney shining, hit five points without reply. Leitrim refused to cave in and got a late consolation through Shane Kiernans goal.  Final score Cavan 1.17, Leitrim 3.4.

Leitrims Hurlers of 25 years ago to Celebrate All Ireland Wins

All Ireland wins for Leitrim are rare events but in two successive years, 1983 and 1984, Leitrim won All Ireland Hurling titles.

In 1983 Leitrims under 16 hurlers won the All Ireland (Special) hurling title beating Longford in the Final in Croke Park. This competition was later called the All Ireland "C" competition. Indeed until the Leitrim Ladies won the Intermediate football title two years ago, this was Leitrims only success at All Ireland Final level in Croke Park. The final was played on the same bill as a Donegal v Galway All Ireland Senior Football semi-final on the 16 August.

The Captain of that famous team was Joe Casey from Aughavas who led the team up the old Hogan stand to get their medals. The team contained players from Ballinamore, Carrick on Shannon, Mohill and Elphin. The Mohill players, and Joe Casey, lined out with Ballinamore as Mohill did not have a hurling club in those years. Elphin played in Leitrim for a few years and contributed greatly to the team.

The following year Leitrim won the corresponding Minor hurling title. The final was played against Longford in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada and 11 of the starting team in the 1984 Minor final were on the starting line-out on the under 16 team a year earlier.

Now, 25 years later, the players on both teams will come together for a celebration in the Bush Hotel on Friday 24 April at 9.00. It promises to be a wonderful occasion as the men who brought two hurling All Irelands celebrate their historic wins. The significance of those victories can be gauged by the fact that Leitrim have never even reached the final of either competition since then.

Leitrims top scorer Clement Cunniffe secured a narrow victory for his side over Fermanagh when he found the range from two frees late in Saturdays NHL Division Four nip and tuck Carrick-on-Shannon clash.

With the concluding round of games taking place on Saturday last Leitrims victory over Fermanagh allowed them edge the Ernesiders out of third place in the final Division Four League table rankings by a just one point score difference margin also.

After playing with the wind Fermanagh led by 1 – 5 to 0 – 7 at halftime with Karl Kehoe Scóring the Erne sides goal in the 9th minute.

Cunniffe levelled matters within 45 seconds of the restart when he converted one of his seven successful frees of the afternoon.

Fermanagh then edged into a minimum margin lead by the 46th minute after Ryan Bogue, John Duffy and Declan McGarry shot over in turn.

The sides drew level on three further occasions following that before Cunniffes strikes near the end edged Leitrim into a two points lead.

But Ryan Bogue reduced Leitrims advantage to the minimum when he shot over for Fermanagh just prior to the final whistle.

A point by Stephen Lambe a minute into stoppage time snatched a late dramatic victory for Monaghan as they kept their unbeaten league run intact in a game where the sides were level on 10 occasions.

Leitrims James Glancy gets a chance to play for Ireland in the Senior Hurling/Shinty Internationals against Scotland on Saturday next, October 18th.  Well done to James on making the Squad and best of luck from all in Leitrim.

The GAA have announced the squads which have been selected for the Under 21 and Senior Hurling/Shinty Internationals against Scotland on Saturday next, October 18th. The Senior International takes place in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny at 3 pm while the Under 21 will be held in Durrow, Co. Laois at 12 noon.

 

Manager, Lester Ryan has named a very strong Senior squad which includes Derek Lyng, Tommy Walsh and Eddie Brennan from All-Ireland champions, Kilkenny as well as Corks Seán Óg Ó hAilpín. The panel also includes three representatives from Carlows Christy Ring Cup winning side, Des Shaw, Edward Coady and Shane KavanÓgh, who captains the side as well as Dermot Clarke and Michael Gilmartin from Nicky Rackard Cup winners, Sligo.

Leitrim Hurlers make the Quarter Finals

Leitrim Hurlers have made the Nicky Rackard Quarterfinals after coming runners up in the division 3B table.  Fermanagh lost to South Down in Enniskillen which paved the way for Leitrims participation in the quarters.

A massive shock arrived in Enniskillen when it was the visitors who were declared winners following this heated Group 3B encounter.

Jason McManus stood out as the magic of the Nicky Rackard Cup was brought to life with some sublime hurling that would have delighted neutral fans of the sport.

The deciding factor in this match was Non Ards approach to the second-half, which was fearsome yet measured – they figured out how to get in behind Fermanaghs defence and they kept exploiting that route.

Leitrim secured their first victory in this competition by beating a strong Fermanagh side in a high-intensity game at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Fermanagh led briefly by the 10th minute but two first-half goals by Leitrims Colm Hayes in the 12th minute and Liam Burns in the 23rd minute rocked Fermanagh.

However, the visitors finished the half strongly when Jason McManus netted in the 32nd minute quickly followed by a Declan McGarry 65 and a Ryan Bogue point to leave Leitrim ahead 2-6 to 1-11.

Fermanagh lost their first-half momentum as Leitrim took control, hitting five points without reply to be well ahead with 10 minutes left.

Bogue and McManus reduced the arrears but Clement Cunniffe steadied the Leitrim ship with a pointed free seven minutes from time.

A spirited second-half comeback saw Non Ards overturn Leitrims seven-point half-time lead in this Nicky Rackard first-round tie on Saturday.

Non Ards took complete control of the proceedings in the first 20 minutes of the second half when they wiped out a Leitrim lead of six points and then went two points ahead.

In this spell, John OKane put over three Non Ards frees while Daniel Morgan and Liam Morgan shot two points apiece from play with Martin Duggan also whipping over a point.

Afterwards, an Eoin McGuinness goal in the 61st minute made victory secure for the Mourne men.

Meanwhile, Leitrims top scorer, Clement Cunniffe hit a spectacular first-half goal from a 120-yard free, which dipped under the Non Ards crossbar at the last second.

Allianz NHL – Rd 5 – Leitrim v South Down

South Down 3-11 Leitrim 2-12

Favourites South Down were pushed all the way by a resurgent Leitrim in an open and exciting encounter at windswept Pairc Sean Mhic Diarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday.

The home side got off to a terrific start leading 1-6 to 0-2 after 25 minutes, but when the Leitrim keeper Fintan McKiernan dropped the ball into his own net following a 65 by John Brown, it left the half-time score just 1-7 to 1-6 in Leitrims favour.

A second Leitrim goal in the 42nd minute by Colm Hayes extended their lead, but two South DownÓgoals by Jonathon McCusker and John OKane between the 44th and 48th minute put the visitors ahead for the first time and despite a late rally resulting in three Leitrim points without reply in the closing minutes, the visitors held out.
