Scór na nÓg Finals a Great Success

The County Finals of Scór na nÓg took place on last Sunday in the Bee Park Centre, Manorhamilton. Fourteen clubs were on stage as almost 160 participants provided the best in Irish cultural activity, music, song, dance etc. It was a wonderful occasion with a packed hall and great entertainment for the audience.

The Roscommon adjudicators had a job to do to settle on winners, as the standard was very high in all events. Apart from all of the winners receiving Scór medals, all participants received a Scór na nÓg certificate indicating that they had participated in the County Finals.

All of the awards were presented by Noeleen Leddy who herself represented Leitrim and her club Glencar/Manorhamilton in Recitation in the Connacht Scór na nÓg Finals in 1990 and 1991. In the latter year Noeleen won the Connacht title and represented Leitrim in the All Ireland Scór na nÓg Finals in the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. Noeleen has since worked with Shannonside and North West Radio as well as with RTE. She is currently working with Mint Productions and was the Producer on the recent successful series of programmes on the life of Bertie Ahern. The whole presentation of the finals was excellent and credit must go to Fear a Tí for the night, Karl McCartin from Drumreilly who did an excellent job. The Bee Park Centre is also an excellent venue for the Finals. Overall, Scór na nÓg in Leitrim is a credit to the clubs and Coiste Scór Liatroma for the effort they put in to the event.

The Cormac MacGiolla Shield for Club na Bliana was won by the Seán OHeslins club and was presented to Sean OHeslins Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga, Brid Sullivan.

The winners who now proceed to the Connacht Finals in Claremorris on Saturday week, 17 January are as follows.

Sixteen clubs took part in the two nights of Scór na nÓg last Saturday and Sunday. There were big numbers on stage on both nights particularly the second night in Carrick on Shannon.. Aughavas took part this year while Ballinaglera and Annaduff took part last year but not this year, so there was one club less but, overall, the number of items on stage was up slightly on last year. The entertainment was wonderful and a credit to the club mentors who coached the youngsters.

Some years ago the big numbers were in the relatively easy to organise events like Trath na gCeist, Amhranaíocht Aonair, Aithriseoireacht and less numbers in the dancing and group events. It is gratifying to see that the event with the biggest numbers this year was Rince Foirne with 18 groups taking part. Events such as this take a lot of time so it is great to see this level of involvement.

The winners who have qualified for the County Finals in Manorhamilton on Sunday 4 December are as follows:

Rince Foirne: Drumreilly, Glencar/Manorhamilton, Aughnasheelin, Ballinamore
Hurling

Amhranaíocht Aonair: Drumreilly, Eslin, St Josephs, Naomh Muire

Ceol Uirlise: Carrigallen, Leitrim Gaels, Dromahair, Glencar/Manorhamilton

Aithriseoireacht: Aughnasheelin, Eslin, Carrigallen, Bornacoola A

Bailéad Ghrúpa: Aughnasheelin, Seán OHeslins, Bornacoola A, Mohill

Trath na gCeist: Bornacoola, Fenagh, Fenagh Handball, Eslin, Ballinamore C

Nuachleas: Aughawillan, Seán OHeslins ,Bornacoola A, Bornacoola B

Rince Seit: Fenagh Naomh Caillin, Aughnasheelin, Seán OHeslins, Aughavas

Scór na mBunscoileanna finishes

The final night of Scór na mBunscoileanna took place in Manorhamilton on Friday last and was a great success. This was a new venture in that it was the first time to run a Scór na mBunscoileanna event specifically for North Leitrim schools and it was very well supported and greatly appreciated by all in attendance. Five schools took part: St Clares, Manorhamilton, Four Masters, Kinlough, Leckaun, Gaelscoil Chluainín and Glenfarne.

In order to promote Scór na mBunscoileanna there were a few differences between the event in Manorhamilton and the South Leitrim events. Schools were allowed to put in unlimited items in all events and there was no adjudication or no winners declared except in Trath na gCeist. St Clares School were particularly well represented and they had no less than eight teams in Tráth na gCeisteanna plus two from Four Master, Kinlough. One of the St Clares teams won by one mark from Four Masters. All the participants got certificates in recognition of having taken part, so there were no disappointed participants. Bhí se ana dheas, freisinÓgaelscoil Chluainín a fheiceáil agus bhí Nuachleas deas acú ann agus bhíodar páirteach i gceithre roinn den chlár.

This year was another year of great progress for Scór na mBunscoileanna. The number of schools participation was up from 16 last year to 19 this year. Míle buíochas do na múinteoirí go háirithe agus do gach duine a chabhraigh.

Scór na nÓg

Scór na nÓg is now less than three weeks away and all entries must be with Maura Mulvey by this Friday 21 November. There is a slight change to the time for the second day of Scór na nÓg due to the Co Convention being on the same day. It will start at 5.00pm on the Sunday in St Marys Hall Carrick on Shannon. The Saturday night will start at 6.00 in Ballinamore.

There has been a slight change to the Scór na mBunscoileanna arrangements. The dates remain the same but the venues have been swapped. On Thursday 6 November the venue is St Marys Hall, Carrick on Shannon and on Friday 7 November the venue is Ballinamore. There are a couple of North Leitrim schools interested in taking part in a North Leitrim event on Wednesday 5 November.
