National League Leitrim were back in Division 2 of the league following last years success. However they failed to make any impact on the league and were very lucky to remain in the same division for 2002. A win over Wexford in the first game was followed by a series of defeats to Louth, Cork, Laois, Kerry and Galway. Everything in the country came to a standstill in the spring of this year with the outbreak of foot & mouth disease and consequently Louth and London were unable to continue in the competition.
Championship As always the focus of the team returned to the Championship. A new format in the competition in Connacht saw a series of first round games to determine the four semi finalists. The opening game against an ever improving Galway team was played in Carrick on 14th July. Leitrim were literally wiped off the field with a poor performance and it looked like the end of the road for the team. However with a second bite at the cherry, Leitrim got back to winning ways with a defeat of Mayo the following week.
The semi final draw paired Galway again as Leitrim's opponents on 5th August. This time it was off to Tuam and now Leitrim were decided underdogs going into the game. However on the day, Leitrim improved beyond recognition from the previous meeting and were indeed unlucky not to cause a surprise on the day. In the end Galway secured a three point win and contested the final against Roscommon.

| Ladies Club Activity 2001 |
Four teams participated in the senior leagues and championship with Aughawillan remaining the dominant senior club in the county with victories in both the league and championship. Adult football in the county was beginning to emerge and grow and a junior B competition was introduced to help new clubs to develop their football at this level. Two clubs entered second adult teams. In the junior A competitions Annaduff were regraded from senior and were joined by Bornacoola, Aughawillan and an emerging young Mohill team. Bornacoola suffered yet another final defeat in the championship by Mohill who also captured the league title at the expense of Annaduff. In the B competition, St Josephs defeated Gortlettragh while Gortlettragh captured their first championship title by defeating Drumkeerin.
In total, fourteen teams representing twelve clubs fielded adult teams in 2001. This was great progress from three years ago when only four adult teams competed.
At underage level St Josephs won at under 12, Annaduff under 14 and Mohill won both under 16 and minor titles.
Schools Carrick Community School reached the final of the Connacht Junior B Competition but were defeated by Presentation Tuam in May. |
| Fundraising |
|
While things were quieter than usual at county level in 2001 the Leitrim Ladies county Board decided that a major need for fundraising must be addressed. A fundraising committee was set up and they went about the job of looking at various ways of getting much needed finance to help with the running of the board, particularly in the areas of development of young players and the preparation of county teams. It was decided to hold a draw at the end of October. The draw was launched in June in Ballinamore at a special function to commemorate the achievements to date of the ladies association in Leitrim. A vast display from all of the clubs and the county teams over the years was prepared. A number of special guests were invited. The draw was a huge success and greatly supported all over the county. |
