Ladies Inter-County Activity 2002
National League
Following a restructuring of the League all of our games with one exception were due to be played away. As is usual at the beginning of the year weather conditions tend to cause problems with fixtures and our opening match with Donegal was postponed on 24th February. Two weeks later we travelled to play Kildare in Carbury in a game eagerly anticipated by the panel and new manager Aidan Heron. Kildare had reached the 2001 All Ireland Final and our performance would give a good indication of the work to be done for the year. On a heavy pitch, Leitrim gathered their first two points of an unbeaten run in the league games to knockout stage with a 4-6 to 1-8 win. What was most pleasing was the performance of new players making their debut for the county. The following week the rearranged Donegal game was played in Letterkenny. Donegal proved to be very tough opponents but Leitrim held on for a single point win by 1-8 to 1-7. On 7th April Leitrim played Fermanagh in Carrigallen and recorded a comprehensive 0-13 to 0-5 win. With a quarter final place now assured the team wanted to finish top of the group which would theoretically ensure an easier draw. On 21st April we travelled to Armagh to take on an up and coming team. They certainly didn't make things easy for Leitrim and we hung on for a 4-2 to 2-8 draw with a poor performance. Our final group game against Down in Burren proved an easier task in winning by 3-7 to 2-5 on 28th April.

Having thus qualified for the knockout stages of the league our quarter final against Louth was played in Dromod on 19th May. A good performance resulted in a win 1-7 to 0-7 win. Two weeks later we faced Donegal in the semi final again in Dromod. A good first half performance when Leitrim dominated the game left us ahead by 1-6 to 1-2 at the break. The second half was a different story and Donegal took over to record a 4-6 to 1-6 win.

Championship
The Championship campaign began only four weeks later and we were lucky to have home games to begin with. In our first round match against Mayo in Dromod, nerves got the better of the team and we only managed to scrape a 2-6 to 2-5 win. Two weeks later and a semi final date with Sligo again in Dromod. This time there was no mistake in the determination of the team - an excellent all round performance ensured a comfortable passage to the final on a 2-13 to 0-4 scoreline.

Final Day in Castlebar was an historic double header but the Galway full forward line caused irreparable damage in the first quarter. While the team never gave up it was Galway that secured a good win and went on to achieve All Ireland success.

Leitrim Panel 2002: Patricia Bohan, Rachelle O Connor, Siobhan Mollaghan, Lorraine McDermott, Linda Tighe, Sinead Brennan (Capt.) Amanda Sweeney, Eimear McGlade, Sarah McLoughlin, Naomi Lee, Deirdre Ward, Karen McGovern, Ann Marie Cox, Bernie Egan, Aoife Kelly, Orla Bohan, Patricia Beirne, Emer Horan, Caroline Egan, Lorna McDermott, Ceara Fitzpartick, Brenda Reynolds, Sandra Early, Deirdre McDernmott, Catherine Dolan, Charlene Tyrrell, Eilis Quinn.

Minor Championship
The first competitive action for the team was the Connacht Semi Final against Sligo in Markievicz Park on 26th June. This game was a very close and exciting encounter but a second half performance inspired by a number of key players ensured a Connacht final appearance by the narrowest of margins.

However one week later in Galway, we were comprehensively defeated in the final. While we were outplayed all over the park by a brilliant team that played faultlessly and went on to defeat all in its wake and win the All Ireland Title. However anyone that witnessed the final saw a Leitrim team that never gave up and fought for every ball. In addition the players had trained tremendously hard all year and deserved to be in the final - what they did not deserve was the final result.

Under 16 & Under 14 Championships
Unfortunately as has been the case in recent years, our younger players were unable to reach the required standard to compete at provincial level. Our under 14 team played Sligo, Roscommon and Mayo away and lost all three games very heavily. The under 16 team travelled to Tuam to play Galway but again were swamped by the home team.

Interprovincials
Four Leitrim players were selected on the Connacht panel for the annual interprovincial championship in Mullingar in May. Well done to Sinead Brennan, Emer McGlade, Deirdre Ward and Patricia Bohan who helped Connacht reach the Championship Final only to be defeated by Ulster by 0-19 to 2-8.

Ladies Club Activity 2002
Division 1
Aughawillan, Cloone, St Josephs and Mohill were joined by Bornacoola, Annaduff and Kiltubrid. Mohill confirmed their senior status by defeating St Josephs in their opening game while Cloone showed they were a force to be reckoned with in drawing with Aughawillan. From the junior teams it always looked likely that Annaduff and Kiltubrid would contest the junior final. When the full series of games had been completed Cloone and Mohill faced each other in the league final played in Cloone. Cloone duly confirmed their championship form with another title.

The Junior A final was played in very difficult conditions in Cloone on 20th October and Kiltubrid recorded a 5-9 to 1-2 win over Annaduff to secure a league and Championship double to add to their under 14 title to make it a very successful season for the club.

Division 2
A total of ten teams took part in this division of the league. While some games at the end of the season were unplayed it did not affect the top two teams in Drumkeerin and Cloone who qualified for the final. Played in Cloone at the beginning of November this was a very close exciting game and in the end Drumkeerin held on to achieve a historic double.

Championship
The club championships kicked off on Saturday 10th August with the Junior B clubs first into action. Drumkeerin and Melvin Gaels opened proceedings in Annaduff with an easy win over Melvin Gaels while St Marys accounted for Aughnasheelin. In the third quarter final defending champions Gortlettragh had to withstand a determined Fenagh challenge before progressing to the semi final.

The following weekend the Senior clubs were out with two eagerly anticipated games. On Saturday Cloone travelled to Aughavas to take on St Josephs and in a close game qualified for another final. The following day Aughawillan put their title on the line against a very determined Mohill side in Dromod. In the end Mohill held on to their lead to reach their first senior final. The fourth Junior B quarter final played afterwards was also an exciting game with new guns Ballinagleara accounting for St Josephs. Cloone B conceded their quarter final to Bornacoola.

The last weekend of August saw the semifinals of the Junior A championship decided. Annaduff and Kiltubrid renewed acquaintances in Dromod with Kiltubrid emerging victorious. They were joined in the final by Bornacoola who had an easy win over Aughawillan.

The Junior B semi-finals were also decided the same weekend. In the first semi final Gortlettragh reached the final yet again in defeating Ballinagleara while Drumkeerin retained their unbeaten run in defeating St Marys.

With all of the finalists now decided, the stage was set for our showcase day on Sunday 15th September and it didn't disappoint. On a beautiful day for football a huge crowd gathered in Annaduff for a feast of football. Fist up was the meeting of Bornacoola and Kiltubrid in the Junior A Final. The teams had played out a close game earlier in the League. On the day Kiltubrid were too good for Bornacoola and duly won their first adult title. Next up was the meeting of Mohill and Cloone in the Senior Final. Cloone always looked to have the edge on their neighbours and took the cup back to Cloone for the first time in ten years. Later that evening another large crowd gathered in Dromod to see Drumkeerin reverse the result of last years final in defeating Gortlettragh - another first for the club.

Minor Championship
St Josephs, Mohill, Cloone, Aughawillan and Kiltubrid all contested the minor championship. Old rivals Cloone and Mohill contested the final in Cloone with Mohill retaining their title again with a 3-10 to 0-6 win.

Under 16 Championship
This competition was run with two groups as follows:
  • Section A: Aughnasheelin, Aughawillan, St Josephs, Manorhamilton
  • Section B: Annaduff, Mohill, St Marys, Dromahaire

In the semifinals Aughawillan defeated Annaduff while Mohill defeated St Josephs. The final which was played in Annaduff was a low scoring game and Mohill retained their title on a 2-5 to 1-3 scoreline.

    Under 14 Championship
The largest number of entries was in the under 14 competition with thirteen teams taking part as follows:
  • Section A: Bornacoola, St Josephs, Annaduff , Fenagh, St Marys, Mohill and Aughawillan
  • Section B: Ballinagleara, Manorhamilton, Aughnasheelin, Dromahair, Drumkeerin and Kiltubrid

Following two play-off games, St Marys and Aughawillan qualified for the semi-finals in Section A while Kiltubrid and Aughnasheelin qualified in Section B.

In the semifinals Kiltubrid defeated Aughawillan while St Marys took the other final place with a win over Aughnasheelin.

As in 2001 the final which was played in Dromod ended in a draw. The replay the following week was again evenly contested but this time Kiltubrid emerged victorous to regain a title previously won in 1995.

    Under 12 Championship
Our under twelve competitions ran on a Saturday during the summer and 12 teams took part.

The competition was divided again into two groups as follows:
  • Section A: Kiltubrid, St Marys, Drumkeerin, Fenagh, Aughawillan and Dromahair
  • Section B: Aughnasheelin, Ballinagleara, Bornacoola, St Josephs, Mohill and Annaduff

Following the series of league games Kiltubrid and Annaduff contested the first semi-final with Kiltubrid reaching the final. Aughawillan defeated Mohill in the second semi final. The final, which was played in Fenagh, was a close encounter and it was no surprise that the teams finished level. In the replay on 4th October Aughawillan proved best on the day and took the title by 0-10 to 1-5.

    Connacht Club Football
Both Cloone and Kiltubrid faced new a journey into the unknown in their quest for Connacht club glory on the weekend of 6th and 7th October. First to play were senior champions Cloone who travelled to Clonbur of Galway in the Intermediate Championship. Despite working hard all through the game they didn't hit top form and were defeated on a scoreline of 4-15 to 1-8. The following morning Kiltubrid travelled to Sligo to play St Marys in the Junior Championship. This was a much closer affair however the Sligo team won on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-5.

    All-Ireland Weekend
Large numbers of players and spectators travelled to Dublin on the last Weekend of September for All Ireland Final Weekend. Cloone and Aughawillan took part in the intermediate sevens competition on Saturday and enjoyed the day. Aughawillan are to be congratulated on reaching the final of the intermediate shield.

    Schools
Marian College, Mohill reached the Group A Senior Final where they were defeated by Presentation College Tuam. The same two teams contested the Group A Junior Final which was played in Mohill but again they were defeated.

Carrick Community School reached the Group B Junior Final where they were defeated by Glenamaddy from Galway.
