Ladies Inter-County Activity 2003
National League 2003
With the help of a major new sponsor, Clarkes Hotel, Mohill. the first outing in Division 2 of the league was away to Roscommon in Tarmonbarry on 16th February and from a five point deficit at half time a last minute goal by Leitrim secured a draw to get the campaign off to a good start. A two point win over Armagh in Cloone followed on 2nd March and two weeks later Leitrim completed their campaign with games against Down and Kildare. On 15th March another last minute goal secured a one point victory over Down in Dromod but the following day a two goal rush by Kildare in the final ten minutes earned a 3-12 to 1-11 win for the vistiors. Despite the defeat Leitrim had booked a quarter final appearance against Louth. This game was played in Ardee on 13th April. A strong Louth team earned a well merited 2-12 to 1-7 win and that ended the 2003 League campaign.

TG4 Championship
The first round game was against Sligo in Markievicz Park on 18th May and Leitrim secured a 4-14 to 2-9 win. There was a nine week break before the campaign resumed and in the semi final a fancied Galway team were the visitors to Dromod on 20th July. Six minutes from the end the teams were level with Leitrim having fought back from a three point deficit and in the final four minutes Leitrim scored 1-4 without reply to secure a flattering seven point win by 1-17 to 3-4. Following a series of games on the other side of the draw Sligo qualified for the final and so it was off to McHale Park in Castlebar on 10th August for the final. Leitrim were hot favourites to regain the Championship title last won in 1999, however on the day, devastation for the county is the only word that comes to mind following sixty minutes of an absorbing encounter. There were many crucial moments in the game but in the end the goals scored were the difference with a 0-18 to 4-8 scoreline. In the dying seconds of the game a blistering Emer McGlade shot walloped off the crossbar and with that all the hopes and dreams for another year were gone.

Minor Championship
A request from the Leitrim county board to play the minor championship against Mayo a week early on 30th July was unable to be facilitated due to the tragic death of Mayo minor player Aisling McGing RIP. With the game scheduled four days before the Connacht final and eleven of the senior squad involved, it was decided that we had no alternative but to concede the game as there was no possibility of playing the game after the final.

Under 16 Championship
In the championship Mayo were the visitors to the St Mary's grounds on 25th June. While Mayo ran out comfortable winners by 5-13 to 1-08, it was clear that with more effort, Leitrim would have been very close to the required standard.

Under 14 Championship
Following a Letrim motion at Connacht Convention the format of the competition changed in 2003 with Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon playing a round robin competition to qualify for a semi final appearance with Mayo and Galway. The first outing was against Roscommon on 23rd April in Kilglass. Despite a defeat there were signs that the team were beginning to gel and two weeks later Sligo were the opponents in St Marys, Carrick on 9th May but again the team were defeated. However despite their exit from the championship the team continued to train and enters both the Connacht and All Ireland Blitz. On the 19th June the squad travelled to Mullingar and played Kildare, Tipperary, Dublin and showed the great inprovements they had made as a team during the year. The following week the team travelled to Castlebar and put in a great effort on the day.

Interprovincials
Emer McGlade, Sinead Brennan, Sarah McLoughlin and Naomi Lee who represented Connacht in the Interprovincials in Mullingar on 8th and 9th June.

Ladies Club Activity 2003
Senior League
Five teams contested the senior league title in 2003 - Aughawillan, Cloone, Mohill, St Josephs and newly promoted Kiltubrid. The crucial matches involved Mohill and Cloone and with the last two rounds not required to be completed, it was Mohill and Aughawillan who contested the final on 28th September in Fenagh. In the end they had to do it all over again with a 0-8 to 1-5 draw. The replay on 13th October saw Aughawillan in devastating form and three first half goals ended Mohills dream of their first senior title with Aughawillan securing the double with a 3-10 to 0-9 win.

Junior A League
Annaduff, Bornacoola ,Drumkeerin and Cloone contested the league and with an unbeaten Annaduff qualifed for the final. Bornacoola defeated Drumkeerin in a playoff and earned another final appearance against their neighbours. Annaduff proved too strong and recorded a 5-11 to 0-3 win in the final in Dromod on 9th November.

Junior B League
A total of eight teams entered this league, however Melvin Gaels withdrew after one game leaving Gortlettragh, Ballinagleara, St Marys, Aughnasheelin, Sean O Heslins, Fenagh and St Josephs to contest the title. Gortlettragh set the early pace and duly for the final. The other final place was a three team race between Ballinagleara ,St Marys and St Josephs with Ballinagleara qualifying for the final. In November Ballinagleara won their first adult title with a 2.05 to 1.01 win. A Junior B Shield final was played on 13th October with Fenagh defeating Sean O Heslins by 5-09 to 1-03

9-A-Side Leagues
In response to a need to provide football during May and June during exam times, a Senior and Junior League was established in 2003. In the senior final St Josephs defeated Cloone while Ballinagleara won the Junior Final with a victory over St Marys. The County Board funded the running of the competition and provided free admission to the finals in Dromod on 22nd June.

Senior Championship
The preliminary round of the championship took place on 27th July with Mohill defeating Kiltubrid in Annaduff. In the first semi final on 17th August, Aughawillan has an easy win over St Josephs. The following day a much closer battle between Mohill and Cloone saw the defending champions progress to the final on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-5. The final on 31st August was played in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada in Carrick was played in front of a large crowd and Aughawillan dominated the opening half to lead by 1-8 to a goal at the end of the first half. Cloone upped their game considerably in the second half to close the gap to a single point with eight minutes remaining but Aughawillan responded with two points to regain the title by 1-10 to 2-4.

Junior A Championship
With just three teams contesting the title the championship was played on a round robin basis. Annaduff comprehensively defeated Drumkeerin in the first game in Dromod on 27th July. Two weeks later they qualified for the final with a seven point win over Bornacoola. The third game between Bornacoola and Drumkeerin was then effectively a semi final with Bornacoola coming good in the second half to record a ten point win. The final in Cloone on 21st September as part of a double header with the Junior B Final brought a record crowd to enjoy both finals. There was little to choose between the teams at the break with Annaduff just two points in front. However in the second half they began to pull away from their neighbours and took the title on a scoreline of 3-15 to 1-8.

Junior B Championship
Seven teams entered the championship race with the Ballinagleara, Fenagh, St Marys and Gortlettragh qualifying for the semi finals. Both semifinals produced exciting finishes with Ballinagleara defeating Fenagh by 2-12 to 3-6 with a last minute scoring spree. In the second semi final St Marys had to withstand fierce pressure from Gortlettragh in the closing stages to record a two point win 1-12 to 2-7. The final in Cloone was another thriller. Ballinagleara enjoyed a three point lead at the interval, but St Marys came back to lead by three points with six minutes to go. A Ballinagleara penalty left the sides level with time almost up but a last minute effort from St Marys hit the net and the title was on its way to the Carrick girls.

Minor Championship
Due to the congestion of fixtures in September it was decided to play the minor championship on a knockout basis. Cloone, Aughawillan and Mohill qualified for the semifinals with wins over Annaduff, St Marys and St Josephs with Ballinagleara getting a walkover against Kiltubrid. In the semi finals Cloone defeated Ballinagleara while Mohill got the better of Aughawilan. Unfortunately the final in Dromod proved to be very one sided with Mohill recording a 5-15 to 0-1 win over Cloone in October.

Under 16 Championship
A total of nine teams from St Marys, Kiltubrid, Cloone, Mohill, Sean O Heslins Dromahair, Manorhamilton, Annaduff and St Josephs took part in the championship. St Josephs and Manorhamilton from Division B and Cloone and Mohill, after a playoff qualified for the semi finals. In the first game St Josephs had an easy win over Mohill while Sean O Heslins defeated Manorhamilton. The final in Annaduff on 9th November was a very close game with Sean O'Heslins looking like taking an historic title until St Josephs scored a crucial goal with just minutes remaining to win by 2-8 to 3-2.

Under 14 Championship
Fifteen teams divided into two groups contested a competitive championship. In Group A St Josephs and Aughawillan qualified for the semi finals while Manorhamilton and Melvin Gaels qualified from Group B. With both semi finals played in Pairc Sean, it was St Josephs and Aughawillan who qualified to meet in the final on 12th August in Dromod. Aughawillan held the upper hand throughout and won by 1-07 to 0-06.

Under 12 Championship
Twelve teams participated in the under 12 championship. While events off the field prolonged the competition it was Kiltubrid, Annaduff, Mohill and Aughawillan that qualified for the semi finals with Kiltubrid and Aughawillan contesting the final in Fenagh on 25th October. In a high scoring end to end encounter a last minute goal for Kiltubrid sealed a two point win by 6-6 to 4-10.

Connacht Club Football
Aughawillan were the first tem into action in the Intermediate championship when they travelled to Ballaghaderreen to take on Kilmovee of Mayo. Despite a spirited performance Aughawillans scoring form deserted them and they were defeated by 1-7 to 0-03. The following day Cloonacool from Sligo came to Annaduff to take on the Leitrim Junior Champions and proved to be the superior team with an easy 6-10 to 0-6 win.

Both Aughawillan and Cloone entered in the Connacht league in May and were drawn against each other in the first round. Aughawillan were the victors and travelled to Galway for the next round but unfortunately were defeated.

All-Ireland Weekend
Aughawillan enhanced a growing reputation in the annual Sevens competition on Saturday in Naomh Mearnog GAA Club Dublin. Qualifying for the Intermediate Championship final after seven games, the team were unlucky to be defeated by a point in the final. Bornacoola competed in the Junior Competition and while they did not advance past the qualifying rounds, they certainly enjoyed the days activity. A Leitrim team featured on the day of the All Ireland Finals with an under 12 team playing in the half time interval.

Feile na nÓg 2003
Kiltubrid were the representatives at Feile na nOg in Mayo in July. They participated in a very enjoyable weekends football.

Schools
Cumman na mBunscoil are continuing to promote girls football in the county by facilitating all of the primary schools with competition at the start of the season.

In the post primary schools a major effort by Connacht Council to get all schools participating in competition has been paying off. In Leitrim a number of the schools entered teams and were relatively successful without winning any titles. Well done to St Clares Comprehensive School from Manorhamilton who qualified for the D 11 a side Connacht Final against St Marys of Sligo.
