Ladies Inter-County Activity 2004
National League 2004
With Manager, Eamonn McGowan and selectors Helen Ward and John Reynolds, the squad began training on the 3rd January. Having been defeated by All Ireland Champions, Donegal in the first round of the league Novem ber 2003 at Ballybofey, it was important to pick up points as soon as possible in 2004. But before the action started the County Board organised a weekend in London for the squad at the end of January. Despite the terrible conditions as great weekend was enjoyed by all that travelled. We played two challenge games on Saturday (despite our late arrival) against London and St Marys College of Strawberry Hill. The following day we attended the Leitrim London men’s National League game in Ruislip. The first game was played on the 8th February in Newbridge against Kildare. A tough close encounter but Kildare won by two points. A week later Leitrim travelled to Tuam to take on Galway’s second string and comprehensively won by 4-16 to 0-4. On the 14th march Leitrim travelled to Maullaghbawn to take on Armagh but suffered a five-point loss in te final game of the series. At last a home game for Leitrim in the Quarter-final when, for the second year in a row, Louth were the opponents in Carrick. Leitrim looked like advancing to the semi-final with a solid performance for most of the game, however, a spirited comeback from Louth in the final quarter meant the game had to go to extra time. Unfortunately Louth were too good during the extra time and recorded a two-point win.

Championship
Leitrim entered the TG4 championship with a first round game against Mayo in Carrick on the 9th May. It turned out to be a meaningless encounter with Leitrim securing a 8-17 to 1-6 win. The eleven-week break to the next competitive championship game proved to be too long in terms of competitive preparation. This was not the fault of players or management as a number of challenge games against strong senior counties such as Dublin, Meath, Donegal and Roscommon were played during this time with very satisfactory results. However, it is difficult to maintain focus for such a long period and in the semi-final against Galway in Tuam on the 24th July, we scraped through to the final with a 2-10 to 0-14 win. The final was played in Pearse Stadium, Galway on the 8th August. Sligo were once again the opposition in the Connaught final. Would this finally be our day? Unfortunately we started badly and could not recover from the concession of two early goals. Getting to within two points of the victors during the second half was as good as it got, and Sligo went on to record a well deserved 4-11 to 1-10 win.

Minor Championship
With a number of players eligible to play for the minor squad from the senior team, it was difficult to organise suitable training sessions. However, a challenge game against Roscommon set up the team well for what would be considered to be a difficult tie away to Mayo in the semi-final on the 26th April. Unfortunately a number of players were unable to travel a distance so close to exam time. Despite a 5-8 to 2-5 defeat, this was probably one of the best fighting performances from a team at this grade for some time.

Under 16 Championship
Leitrim again entered a team in the Under 16 championship with Roscommon the visitors to Dromod on the 22nd April. However, our young team found the standard too high and were comprehensively beaten.

Under 14 Championship
Hopes were high for our Under 14 team in 2004. With a number of training sessions and challenge games under their belt, the team were unlucky to go down to Sligo in the first round by 2-06 to 1-05. In the second game against Roscommon in Annaduff, the visitors proved too strong and went out of the competition. The squad also entered both the Connuaught Blitz and the All Ireland Blitz later in the year and competed well in both competitions.

Under 12 Championship
As Leitrim hosted the Connaught Under 12 Blitz in Annaduff on the 12th June, it was decided to enter a squad representing all of the clubs in Leitrim. The team performed remarkably well and only missed out on a place in the final on scores.

Ladies Club Activity 2004
Division 1 League
Six teams contested the senior league title in 2003 – Aughawillan, Cloone, Mohill, St Josephs, Kiltubrid and Annaduff. The crucial matches involved Mohill and Cloone and with the last two round not required to be completed, it was Cloone and Aughawillan who contested the final on the 7th November where Aughawillan completed the doubtle with a 2-11 to 1-6 win.

Division 2 League
The junior A and junior B teams all played together in the rounds of Division 2. Bornacoola set the pace from the beginning and duly qualified for the final. Cloone and St Marys needed a playoff for the other junior A final place. In a high scoring entertaining game, Bornacoola won their second trophy of the season defeting Cloone in the final on the 24th October. St Josephs qualified for the league final with impressive wins during the season but the race for the other final place was a close run affair. Ballinagleara finally took that place and in the second half of the final, they found their championship form to retain the title they won last year. Glencar Manor defeated Sean O’Heslins to face Dromahair in the shield final, the last game of the season on the 5th December. An entertaining game saw Glen Manor take the shield for their first ever title.

9-A-Side Leagues
The second year of the 9 a side leagues proved very successful. Cloone defeated St Josephs in the senior final with Sean O’Heslins winning their first adult title in the junior final by defeating Glencar Manor. Thanks to Mary Kelly for co-ordinating the competition.

Senior Championship
With Annaduff and St Josephs defeated in the quarter final, there were two closely fought semi-finals played on the 15th August with Aughawillan and Mohill qualifying for the final. In an entertaining final played in Cloone on the 5th September, Aughawillan retained their title despite a second half rally by Mohill.

Senior B Championship
Five teams entered this new competition with Bornacoola defeating St Marys in the quarter-final. In the semi-final Kiltubrid reached the final with a win over St Josephs. Bornacoola and Annaduff drew the other semi-final in controversial circumstances but in the replay, Bornacoola won through to the final. In a closely fought final in Dromod on the 17th October Kiltubrid won their first senior title with a 1-8 to 1-6 win.

Junior A Championship
With just two teams contesting the title, the championship title, the final between St Marys and Bornacoola was played in Cloone on the 5th September. There was nothing between the teams all through the game and it finished level. The replay took place two weeks later in Annaduff but this time Bornacoola dominated throughout and finally ended their unenviable losing record to record their first adult title.

Junior B Championship
Six teams entered the Junior B Championship and in the quarter-fnals on the 14th July, Sean O’Heslins and Fenagh exited the competition. In the semi-finals Gortlettragh defeated Dromahair while Ballinagleara reached the final again with a win over Glencar Manor. The final was played on a wet windy day on the 22nd August with Ballinagleara recording their first championship win and will now play at Junior A level in 2005.

Minor Championship
Eight teams from Mohill, Bellinagleara, Kiltubrid, St Josephs, Glencar Manor, St Marys, Aughawillan and Sean O’Heslins. Mohill and Kiltubrid qualifed for the final in Annaduff on the 9th September and Mohill retained their title on a 3-9 to 2-4 scoreline.

Under 16 Championship
In the 11 a side competition, Glencar Manor, Mohill, Aughawillan, St Marys, Ballinagleara, Sean O’Hesline and Kiltubrid competed with Aughawillan and Glencar Manor qualifying for the final. The two teams were evenly matched throughout with Aughawillan prevailing on a 0-5 to 0-3 result. In a 9 a side competition, Kiltubrid, Glencar Manor, St Josephs and Aughawillan reached the semi-finals. Aughawillan retained their title in fenagh on the 3rd August when they defeated Kiltubrid. The shield title was won by Dromahir who defeated Allen Gaels who were appearing in their first ever final. In the 9 a side competition, Ballinagleara defeated Melvin Gaels in the final while Bornacoola won the shield title at the expense of Fenagh.

Under 14 Championship

Under 12 Championship
On the 26th September a very enjoyable day of football was held for our youngest footballers when the three finals were played in Dromod. St Josephs won the 11 a side competition when they defeated Mohill while Kiltubrid got the better of Annaduff in the 9 a side final. Goals a plenty in the 7 a side final with Cloone emerging victorious over Allen Gaels.

Connacht Club Football
Aughawillan again attempted to left the intermediate crown and secured a final appearance with a fine win over St Marys of Sligo. The final against St Brigids of Roscommon was played in Aughawillan on the 17th October. Despite a great battling performance, Aughawillan fell just short of the mark and lost by two points to the eventual All Ireland Champions. Bornacoola ventured into the unknown in the junior semi final against Grainne Mhaols in Dromod on the 10th October but found the Galway champions too strong and exited the competition.

Inter-Provincials
Emer McGlade, Sarah McLoughlin and Lorraine who were chosen on the Connaught panel for the Inter-provincial championshp in Mullingar on the 28th and 29th May.

All-Ireland Weekend
Aughawillan made their annual trip to the All Ireland Sevens and after many near misses finally landed the Intermediate Shield title after a hard days football. Well done to the squad for a remarkable win.

Feile na nÓg 2003
Aughawillan travelled to Tyrone to represent Leitrim at Feile na nOg as 2004 under 14 champions and enjoyed a great weekend of football.

Schools
St Clare’s Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton won the Senior D Connaught Secondary Schools title at the expense of Swinford, Co Mayo.
