| Ladies Inter-County Activity 2005 |
2005 In a year of intensive action at both club and county level, it was Aughawillan that grabbed the headlines when they finally captured the Connacht Intermediate Club title in October. As a record number of fixtures had to be fulfilled, there were a number of great performances from individual teams where ten clubs shared the 23 titles between them. On the county scene, Leitrim failed to make an impression in the league but four championship wins saw the county once again quality for the Conanacht final.
National League 2005 The year started at the end of January with National League action for the county team in Division 2. With many new faces on the panel, it took some time for the players to get together and in their first outing against Longford, the team suffered a heavy defeat. There followed a very tight encounter with Donegal in Carrigallen two weeks later resulting in a single goal defeat, and a very tough outing against Laois in Portlaoise. Defeat in the final game against eventual All Ireland champions Armagh in Carrigallen confirmed relegation for the first time in five years. However, in their six point defeat against Armagh, Leitrim showed enough potential to hope that the team could yet again mount a serious championship campaign that was shortly to get underway.
Championship A new league format was introduced for the Championship, with London entering the Connacht Championship race for the first time. In the first of the five games, London were the visitors to Drumshambo in early May where a record 14 points by Ann Marie Cox got Leitrim off to the perfect start as Leitrim recorded a 1-20 to 1-5 win. Two weeks later, Sligo came to Ballinamore and while the home team held their own in the first half, Sligo showed their greater experience in the secon to run out easy 3-13 to 1-7 victors. A break of five weeks followed and Leitrim got back to winning ways with an impressive 5-15 to 0-3 win in Hyde Park over Roscommon. The following week it was make or break time when Galway came to Drumshambo. On a very wet evening, Leitrim showed plenty of character to record a crucial 2-10 to 3-5 win. Three weeks later only Mayo could prevent a third successive final appearance but again Leitrim, whilst sometimes showing signs of nerves, did enough to secure a 2-10 to 2-6 win in Charlestown.
The Connacht final in Pearse Stadium on 6 August gave Leitrim the opportunity to make amends for previous defeats. However on the day, nothing could prevent an impressive Sligo team retaining the title as Leitrim did not perform to expectations. A 2-18 to 2-3 defeat was a crushing blow but under the new format, a quarter final appearance against Wexford gave the team an opportunity to make amends. A journey to Tullamore on 27 August ended again in defeat for Leitrim this time on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-3. Leitrim managed to get to within two points of Wexford with 5 minutes remaining in the game, but three late Wexford points ensured there would be no fairytale ending to the championship campaign this year.
Underage County With each of the four underage championships played on a league basis in Connacht, Leitrim entered all competitions with mixed results. The minor team always found the going tough but fulfilled all of their fixtures despite some travel difficulties for players. The Under 16 team put in a good year’s work with some promising results, a thrilling victory over Sligo the highlight of their campaign. The Under 14 and Under 12 teams did not feature in the latter stages of the championship but put in some good performances.
Club Championship
In the senior club championship, Mohill disposed of both Annaduff and Bornacoola on their way to a county final appearance. Kiltubrid, on the other side of the draw enjoyed a good win over Cloone but were unable to prevent Aughawillan reaching another county final. The final itself was evenly contested in the first half but in the second, Aughawillan began to dominate and ended up recording a memorable win to retain their title yet again. The story did not end there for Aughawillan as they faced another Connact campaign with renewed optimism. Despite conceding 3 early goals, Aughawillan recorded a 7 point win over Killanin of Galway to set up a second final appearance. Their opponents on the day was St Nathys of Sligo and with home advantage Aughawillan set out to erase the heartbreak of their 2004 final defeat.
There was little to choose between the teams in the first half with Aughawillan enjoying a slender lead at the break. They increased their lead in the second half but had to withstand a late comeback from Nathys before securing a memorable single point win. A trip to Kerry in the All Ireland quarter final against Abbeydorney proved to be a difficult hurdle, and despite a great comeback they eventually went down by 3 points to the team that went on to win the All Ireland title.
In the Junior Championship, both Ballinaglera and St Joseph’s reached the county final at the expense of St Marys and what a thriller the large crowd in Cloone was treated to in early September. Each team enjoyed periods of superiority and there was no doubt that the result was going down to the wire. In the end, St Joseph’s took the title and regained senior status for 2006. Glencara Manor dominated the Junior B Championship and with Aughnasheelin, Fenagh and Gortlettragh failing to progress, it was Sean O’Heslins that met Manor in the final on the 11 September. The North Leitrim team recorded an emphatic win to enhance a growing reputation. Kiltubrid’s defence of the Senior B Championship commenced with a semi final win over Bornacoola who had narrowly defeated Ballinaglera in the previous round. Annaduff also qualified for the final with wins over St Mary’s and St Joseph’s. The final was played on 11 September with Kiltubrid regaining their tile with a comprehensive win.
Club League With an extensive inter-county programme and Aughawillan’s progress in the Club Championship, the league final was not decided until late November. Aughawillan faced Kiltubrid at the end of a long season for both teams and in the end Aughawillan achieved another double to add to their many previous titles.
The Junior A final was a repeat of the Championship final with St Joseph’s and Ballinglera renewing rivalry. This time it was Ballinglera that took the honours in Aughnasheelin with a 3 point win. Glencar Manor repeated the result of the championship final with a win over Sean O’Heslins in the Junior B Final. The 9 a side leagues ran in May and June saw Kiltubrid take the senior title, St Joseph’s the Intermediate and Glencar Manor the Junior Title.
Under Age:
A total of 12 teams took part in the Minor championships with Glencar Manor and Kiltubrid contesting the championship final. After a draw in the final in early September, Kiltubrid recorded a comprehensive win in the replay. St Josephs defeated Sean O’Heslins in the 9 a side final. The Under 16 competition was equally competitive with Glencar manor narrowly defeating Aughawillan in the final while in the 9 a side competition, Kiltubrid defeated St Josephs. The Under 14 Championship was won by Kiltubrid and the 7 a side by Cloone with Mohill and Leitrim Gaels winning the shield finals. 18 teams contested the Under 12 competitions with St Josephs winning the championship, and Leitrim Gaels the 7 a side championship while Mohill and Sean O’Heslins won the Shield titles. |
