Leitrim 1-11
Sligo 2-7

After absolutely dominating the exchanges in the first half, Leitrim had to come from behind to claim a minimum margin win over Sligo, thanks to a late Shane Flanagan free conversion at the end of Friday evening’s cracking Ted Webb Cup game in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry.

Leitrim enjoyed a seven point’s interval lead after outplaying Sligo in the opening 30 minutes. But a rejuvenated Sligo turned the game completely around in the second half after they grabbed the lead at the end of the third quarter with goals from Thomas Byrne and sub Hughie Madden.

A dream start occurred for Leitrim when James Murray crashed the ball to the Sligo net within 20 seconds of the throw in after Murray had been put through by Shane Flanagan. Over the next 12 minutes Leitrim increased their lead when Shane Flanagan added two points and Morgan Quinn hit over a point, as well.

Leitrim ‘keeper Shane Sweeney prevented a Sligo goal bound effort entering his net in the 14th minute when deflecting a pile driver out for a ’45.’
Keelan Watters opened Sligo’s account when he hit over a long range in the next minute point.

Sligo’s Hughie Madden had a goal chance denied when Leitrim ‘keeper Shane Sweeney made a top class 21st minute save. Thomas Byrne cut Leitrim’s advantage when he put over a Sligo free three minutes later.

But Leitrim hit back with points from play by Morgan Quinn, Kevin Davey and Shane Flanagan to lead by 1-6 to 0-2 at the interval. However Sligo reduced Leitrim’s lead within five minutes of the restart when Thomas Byrne tapped over a free and Hughie Madden hit a point from play.

Martin Beirne kept the pressure on Sligo when he replied with a 36th minute Leitrim point. But over the next nine minutes Sligo took control of the exchanges and grabbed the lead for the first time in the game.

This purple Sligo patch was initiated by Jason Mathews when he hit over a 41st minute point from play. After that Tomas Byrne and Hughie Madden followed up with two well-takenÓgoals, which put the Yeats County in front.
After coming through some choppy waters, James Murray steadied the Leitrim ship when he levelled matters with a 46th minute point. Leitrim regained the lead when Morgan Quinn hit over another point five minutes later.

But Sligo regrouped and went back in front again by the 56th minute after Thomas Byrne hit over two points, one from play and the other from a well hit sideline kick. Byrne’s first point in this spell came an intense bout of Sligo pressure when Leitrim ‘keeper Shane Sweeney managed to keep the ball out of his net on no less than three successive occasions, before Byrne shot over.

Morgan Quinn failed to level matters when he hit a 60th minute Leitrim free wide but Shane Flanagan made amends when he tapped over another free two minutes later. Then, as the game was heading for a dramatic climax, Flanagan secured victory for Leitrim when he converted a 64th minute free.

However Sligo had a chance to claim a share of the spoils before the finish when Jason Mathews attempted to convert a long range free. But despite finding the distance with his kick, Mathews’ shot just tailed off wide.

Shane Sweeney; Dean McVeigh, James O’Brien, Thomas Cornyn; Declan Brennan, Sean McWeeney, Shane Ryan; Kevin Davey (0-1), Conor McWeeney; Gerard Kelly, Morgan Quinn (0-3), Martin Beirne (0-1); James Murray (1-1), Shane Flanagan (0-5), Ryan Creamer. Subs Ciarán Brick for Creamer (59 mins).

Leitrim 1-14 Donegal 1-16 AET

It was a late point from substitute Eamon McGee which sealed victory for the Tir Chonaill men following a keenly contested game played before a large crowd.

A goal from substitute James Glancy in the seventh minute of injury-time forced extra-time but Donegal did enough to hold out for a slender victory with Rory Kavanagh impressive.

With Leitrim holding a commanding 0-6 to 0-2 lead at this stage and dominating possession it looked like they would continue to maintain their early pace but suddenly Donegal sprung to life with scores from Brendan Devanney and Kevin McMenamin cutting the gap to two points with five minutes remaining before the interval.

However Brian McIvers side were now full of confidence and when Leitrim were gifted a penalty, Paul Durcan showed great resiliance between the posts.

Half-forward Declan Maxwell was pulled down before Michael Foley failed to hit the back of the net after a fully out-stretched Durcan stopped the centre-half forwards kick.

Donegal bounced back with Ryan Bradley converting a point at the opposite end to cut the gap to the minimum before a rifling kick from Michael Murphy following a Kevin McMenamin pass finished in the back of the Leitrim net and ensured that the visitors took a 1-5 to 0-6 interval lead.

The second half was a very even affair with both teams exchanging point for point as little separated the sides in both the Scóring and possession stakes.

Just three points came from placed balls in the second half with Ciaran and Michael Duignan converting a free and a 45 respectively for Leitrim while McMenamin took Donegals lone pointed free in the 16th minute of the second half.

Both teams took some inspirational points from play with Leitrim defender Dermot Reynolds cutting the gap to two points 11 minutes into the half.

Murphys goal proved to be the real difference between the sides for the majority of the second half and indeed into injury-time where that goal was still proving to be the vital difference.

However with at least six minutes of injury-time to play, there was still enough time for Donegal to find the back of the net and second half substitute Glancy brought his haul to 1-2 with a 77th minute goal which ensured extra-time.

The home side failed to score in the first period of extra-time and Donegal took points from Kavanagh (2) and Christy Toye. Although Ciaran Duignan was impressive on the restart with two Leitrim points, Donegal somehow held out for a win.

Now that the dust has settled after the fantastic Feile Peil na nÓg Liatroma event that finished on Sunday evening its time to reflect on the effort by many to host such a spectacle.

The event captured the heart and imagination of may people in the support counties Roscommon, Sligo and the main host county Leitrim as it did with many of the visiting teams who traveled near and far to the picturesque North west.

It was a huge undertaking and the subsequent praise heaped upon the various local committees and the main event committee is justified. While the counties Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo may jostle on the field while in competition the unity if the three while under the Feile flag was very evident over the last number of months and in particular last weekend.

This event was a logistical nightmare with 170 plus teams participating in 11 competitions divided between boys and girls teams with all the visiting teams hosted in the local communities. An extra competition, Division 7 boys, was introduced for this event and the winners received a cup donated in memory of Niall Higgins, Drumshanbo.

The parade alone would have been enough of an event for any committee to organise and it went extremely smoothly considering over 5,000 team members were asked to assemble in an organised fashion on the field in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada. Thankfully a large car park exists to handle the numbers of buses and coaches required to transport everyone. The Gardai, local stewards and local businesses must come in for praise for organising the parking and traffic arrangements on a very busy national route.

Throughout the weekend the results came flooding in to the results centre from the 41 event centres located throughout Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo. By Saturday afternoon almost 236 games were played and it was down to the 22 semi-finals for the evening. Saturday night the results were processed and we had 22 teams to play in the 11 finals on Sunday. The finals started at 9am and a great start for Leitrim with our first ever Feile winners- Drumreilly/ Aughawillan. The rest of the day saw thousands watch the remaining finals, including the skills final, all of which were recorded by Setanta Sports. Our new stand was never without a calling supporter or on occasion a tearful eye.

The results centre was a picture of calmness while the results website was anything but quiet as on Friday alone over 5,000 pages of results were served. Saturday was extremely busy as the administrative team verified and posted the results while 13,200 pages were demanded throughout the day. Sundays finals saw in excess of 7,000 requests for results and even on Monday as everyone recovered 5,400 pages were reviewed. A big thank you to the 41 coordinators for speedily relaying the results back to the centre and to the team there who quickly received, verified and uploaded each result into the software that managed 55 tables which were required to keep track of proceedings.

The curtains were drawn on a wonderful event on Sunday evening as the mix of elated winners, happy runners-up and supporters made their way home. Finally the Feile Committee made up of a very hard working group of people could take a collective sigh of relief. These individuals lead by Chairman Stephen Flynn and Secretary Patricia Bohan should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Thanks also is due to the National Feile Committee who were at hand throughout the weekend and the best of luck to the Cavan representatives who received the Feile flag on Sunday evening and who have 12 months to prepare for Feile Peil na nÓg 2008. To all the parents and members of local committees throughout Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon please take a bow as you fed, entertained and housed the visiting teams. Each of you did your selves proud in the presentation and smooth running of your own local events. While Setanta Sports recorded the field action it was down to the 2 men James Molloy and Willie Donnellan to catch all of the action on camera and their efforts are on display via the Photo Gallery on this website.

To all concerned Feile Peil na nÓg Liatroma was a wonderful event and will stay in the memory of many for a long time.
