Philip McGuinness - 29-Feb-1984 to 19-Apr-2010

On Monday, 19th April 2010, Philly was taken from us all following a tragic accident on a football field on the previous Saturday doing what he loved most.

The word spread late on the Saturday night that his condition was more serious than concussion and by Sunday afternoon our worst fears became a reality.

On the Monday evening Philly's passing was formally announced and later a book of condolence was opened which thousands have since signed. Such is the impact Philly has had on all of us that in 1 week over 29,600 people visited the site from 70 countries to share their grief. The book, the photos and videos were viewed over 400,000 times and many a tear has fallen on keyboards across the globe.

We wish to express our sympathies to all who knew Philly in whatever capacity and in particular his mother Phil, brothers John and Michael and his extended family.

Philly - may you rest in peace

A Prayer for Footballers

Grant me, O Lord, a footballer's skill
With strength of arm and speed of limb.
Unerring eye for the flying ball
And courage to match them what ere befall.
May my aim be steady, my stroke be true,
My actions many, my mistakes few;
And no matter what way the game may go
May I part in friendship with every foe.
When the final whistle for me is blown
And I stand at last at God's judgements throne,
May the referee when he calls my name
Say, 'You played like a man;
You played the Game'.

Communion reflection as recited
at the funeral mass by team mate
and close friend Ciaran Kennedy
