Scór – All Ireland Finals

The All-Ireland Senior Scór final will be held this weekend in the Venue in Derry. The competition starts at 3pm sharp. Some Tickets for the event are still available for anyone wishing to travel to support our Leitrim competitors.  St Marys figure dance team are heading to the competition for the 2nd year in a row, the 8 ladies are hoping for a good outcome in Saturdays event. Brendan Brennan from Ballinamore Sean OHeslins club represents Connacht in the recitation, the club will also be featuring in the Novelty Act, having won the All-Ireland title in 2009, their witty sketch will no doubt go down a storm again this year with the adjudicators. Fenagh St Caillins are the Connacht Set Dance winners, their fantastic performance in the Connacht finals will give them a great fighting chance of clinching the title on Saturday.

Leitrim 1-06 Galway 0-14

 

Galway opened up the Scóring with a point from Cormac Rafferty in the second minute of the game but Leitrim’s Conor Gaffney levelled in the following minute from a free. Galway went ahead again with a point from Eamon BranÓgan but Leitrim levelled again with a point from Kenny Cox a minute later.

Galway went ahead and in the 17th minute they had a three point lead with points from Jason Lyons, Paul Mannion and BranÓgan. In the 19th minute Leitrim got a point from play scored by Conor Gaffney.

Over the next few minutes Galway’s Dylan Thornton scored a point and Leitrim’s Paul Mannion replied with a free putting the score at half time Galway 0-7 Leitrim 0-4.

Leitrim opened the Scóring in the second half with a point from Conor Gaffney. Galway had a let off two minutes later when Kenny Cox failed to convert a goal chance from close range and in the 38th minute Galway’s Michael Daly increased their lead with a point.

Leitrim scored the only goal in the game and it came from Kenny Cox after a fine piece of individual play and the shot gave the Galway keeper James Healy no chance of saving. Within a minute Leitrim went ahead when Cathal Keegan shot over a long range point and the excitement in Pairc Sean was amazing when the Leitrim Supporters really got behind the team but unfortunately it was short lived as this was Leitrims last score of the match.

At this time Galway made a couple of substitutions and Galway levelled with a point from Michael Daly in the 43rd minute. Galway regained the lead in the 46th minute with a point from sub Darren Moran. Galway went on to add two more points from Paul Manion and subs Enda Tierney and Darren MoranÓgot a point each putting the final score Galway 0-14 Leitrim 1-06.

Ballinamore SOH 8-05 Carrigallen 3-05

 

Congratulations to both Ballinamore SOH and Carrigallan for reaching the under 14 13-a-side final after both teams worked extremely hard to get there but it was Ballinamore who emerged winners in the U14 13-a-side league final with Barry McGovern, Tom Prior and Conor McGrath playing a significant role in their sides victory.

It has to be noted that even though Ballinamore were deserving winners, Carrigallan played their part in what was a very enjoyable game. Colm Kiernan, Jamie Manus and Owen Connolly did their best to keep Carrigallan in the game but unfortunately as the game went on it was clear to see that Ballinamore would not be beaten with the final score Ballinamore SOH 8-05 Carrigallen 3-05

2013 KELLOGG’S GAA CÚL CAMPS LAUNCHED AT CROKE PARK 

GAELIC GAMES CONTINUE TO TOP THE POPULARITY POLL WITH PARENTS IN IRELAND 

Gaelic games continue to top the poll as the most popular sports played by Irish children, with seventy seven per cent playing either football (44%) or hurling/camogie (33%), according to a survey commissioned by Kellogg’s to celebrate the launch of the 2013 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps. 

The popularity of Gaelic games among Irish parents is reaffirmed by the fact that 42% of those surveyed, plan to send their children to a Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp, in 2013.  Over 82,000 children took part in the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps in 2012 – a six per cent increase on the previous year. Having fun (30%) and value for money (25%) are the two most important factors parents consider when choosing a summer camp for their children. 85% of parents surveyed believed that the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps represent ‘good value for money’.

Speaking at the launch of the 2013 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps,  GAA President, Liam ÓNéill said: “Kellogg’s came on board as the title sponsor of the GAA Cúl Camps in 2012 and this has been a tremendously successful partnership, to date.  Kellogg’s support in 2012 delivered phenomenal results with Cúl Camps attendances up 6% on 2011.” 

Speaking at the launch, Kellogg’s Managing Director, Jim McNeill said: “At Kellogg’s we are committed to partnerships which support communities, enhance skills and deliver value for money for hard pressed consumers. We are delighted that our support of the GAA Cúl Camps has encouraged greater participation and we are committed to continuing this support in 2013, so that more Irish families can enjoy the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp experience.” 

Promotional packs of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Kellogg’s Rice Krispies will feature a unique code, which can be used online by parents to receive a €5 discount off the €55 fee for the 2013 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps. The unique codes will be printed on the inside of promotional packs, available in stores from April to August 2013. One code can be used per child, per registration, to avail of the €5 discount. Parents, simply log on to www.gaa.ie/kelloggsculcamps to avail of this discount. Further discounts are available to families that register more than one child for a 2013 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp, making them one of the most affordable national summer camps.

Kelloggs GAA Cúl Camps provide boys and girls – between the ages of 6 and 13 – with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity which revolves around maximising enjoyment and learning the skills of Gaelic Games. The camps are structured so that a different aspect of the game is worked on each day and children can put into practice what they have learned.  Over one thousand camps will take place in communities all over Ireland during July and August with 2,100 voluntary coaches giving over 30,000 hours of coaching to young children.

Speaking at the launch, Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps Champion, Padraic Joyce added: “I am delighted to get involved with the Cúl Camps programme this year, while there were no such camps in my day, I have mentored and coached at camps in my own club, Killererin, and I have seen how childrens’ skills can dramatically improve with expert coaching delivered in a safe and fun atmosphere.

GAA legends centre stage at free Connacht Social Initiative celebration night

 

Special club draw on the night for trip to Arás an Uachtarán

 

A special gala event to recognise the work of GAA Social Initiative clubs across Connacht will culminate with a draw for the representatives of lucky clubs to attend Áras an Uachtarán for an audience with President Higgins in May.

The gala event will take place in the new Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Ballyhaunis on Wednesday, May 1, from 7-9pm, with an open invitation to all GAA Social Initiative clubs in the province to attend. Representatives from any club that would like to get involved are also encouraged to come along for what promises to be a great night’s entertainment and a trip down Connacht GAA’s memory lane.

MC on the night is Tommy Moran, Connacht PRO. A renowned raconteur, the former Leitrim County Secretary of 25 years will reminisce with some of the most recognisable names in Connacht GAA over the past decades, including former GAA President Dr. Mick Loftus (Mayo), Sligo’s first All Star and 1975 Connacht winning footballer, Mickey Kearins; Leitrim legend from the 1950s and ‘60s Josie Murray; Donie Shine Snr, former Roscommon player and Manager and well-known radio pundit; and Joe Connolly, Galway’s All Ireland hurling winning captain of 1980.

The GAA Social Initiative aims to use GAA clubs as a focal point for social activities for older members of our communities. It began in 2007 following an observation by then President Mary McAleese and her husband Martin of a dearth of older men attending the various functions they visited across the 32 counties. The island’s network of GAA clubs was identified as a vehicle to tackle the isolation and loneliness that can impede people from fully engaging with their communities, friends, family and neighbours. From its starting point as a small pilot in four counties (Mayo, Fermanagh, Kerry, and Wexford), 200 clubs are now registered as GAA Social Initiative clubs, running events ranging from card nights, ceiligh houses, to trips and excursions to the GAA museum in Croke Park, the Titanic Centre in Belfast or the National Museum of Country Life in Mayo.

The St. Joseph’s Club in Roscommon will provide an insight into their successful Social Initiative club, including their recent trip to Belfast. Other contributors on the night will include Colin Regan, GAA Social Initiative Manager in Croke Park, and Professor Sabina Brennan from Trinity College, who heads up a positive aging project. Entertainment on the night will be provided by Connacht Scór. All are welcome.

As already mentioned, all Social Initiative clubs that attend on the night will be entered into a special draw to win three coveted places on visit to Arás an Uachatarin in May. President Higgins is a noted supporter of the GAA Social Initiative and gave his full endorsement to its work in his wonderful address to GAA Congress 2013 in Derry in March. He is hosting representatives of GAA Social Initiative clubs in Arás an Uachtarán on Thursday, May 30th. Numbers are limited and will be allocated by a draw on the night.

Admission to the event is free and light refreshments will also be served. Connacht Táin league –
Last week was a very busy week for the Leitrim representitives in the Connacht Táin league.  In division 2A Carrick and Cluainin Iomaint were drawn to play in Kiltubrid last Wednesday in a play off.  Carrick were vicorious winning on a score line of 0.17 to 0.07.  This win meant they had to play Belmullet on Saturday.  Carrick again had an impressive win over Belmullet on a Scórline of 5.07 to 3.06.  Carrick now have to play Castlebar Mitchels at the Connacht GAA 3G pitch Tuesday 16th at 8.30pm.  This will be Carricks fourth game in 12 days.  With quite a young team they will be hoping youth will be on their side as they take on the Mayo club and make history in the first year of the Connacht Táin hurling league.
 
Sligo hurling league –
Cluainin Iomaint under 16s recorded their second win last Wednesday evening when they beat Coolera/Strandhill on a scoreline of  4.10 to 6.08. Andrew Loughlin was man of the match for Cluainin as he comanded the defence.  In the forwards Damon Beattie continued his Scóring form by Scóring 2.03 while Martin Feeney scored 2.04. Feeney showed some lovely touches and scored some fine points. Ferghal Rooney first game back for the club also impressed and scored a great point on the run.  Michael Loughlin and Joe McGriskin netted the all important goals towards the end of the game to seal victory for the Manorhamilton men.  They play Naomh Eoin this wednesday at 7pm.
 
 
Lory Meagher cup –
The Leitrim senior hurlers will take encouragement from Longford winning the Allianz division 3B final over Sligo last Sunday.  Leitrim drew with Longford earlier this year in the National league and will also play Longford May 11th..  The senior hurlers begin their championship with a home game with Fermanagh on May 4th.

Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship

Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship
The 2013 Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship came to its conclusion on Saturday with the finals played in Ballaghadereen and Charlestowm. Cormac Scollan was the only Leitrim competitor to reach the finals and he came away with the Boys u11 title defeating Niall Flemming of Mayo on a scoreline of 15-6, 15-10. In a very entertaining match with some great rallies and kill shots Scollan eased to victory to take the first game. The second game was much tighter early on with both players swapping scores, but once Scollan took the lead he never relinquished it. Flemming put up a real battle but midway through the game Scollan took control and put enough daylight between them to secure a great victory. On his route to the final he defeated Conor Finn of Sligo 15-10, 15-12 in the quarter final and Colm Cunningham Galway 15-6, 15-2 in the semi-final.
 
Leitrim had a total of 11 competitors taking part in the championship including: Fergal McLoughlin and James Wrynn u11 Doubles, Eoin McLoughlin u12, Robert Maguire u13, David Wrynn u14, Aaron McLoughlin u15, James Maguire and Conor McKeon u15 Doubles Tony Simms u16 and  Mark Leddy u17. All players reached the semi-finals against a stronger Galway selection with Mark Leddy losing out to Eamon OMaoilchianain in the u17 Final.

The annual Williamstown One-Wall Tournament takes place this year on May 24th – 26th in Williamstown HC, Galway.

Weekend action in Leitrim Ladies Football

Weekend action in Leitrim Ladies Football
 
 

Again, another very busy weekend in Leitrim Ladies county football and also on the club scene with the league continuing with 8 club teams in action too. 
 
U14 County team are in action against Galway in Tuam Stadium at 4pm 
 

The Minor ladies are taking on neighbours Roscommon at 6pm on Saturday in Ballinamore. This game is being kindly sponsored by Scollans Gala Drumshanbo – a huge thanks to them. 

 
The Division 3 team are in a playoff on Sunday in Moate GAA grounds Vs Tipperary at 2pm. This is a big game for the ladies. if they win they play Armagh in the semi finals in Clones the following weekend. 
 
It would be great to see some friendly faces supporting all our teams this weekend.

Connacht Minor League Mayo 1-13 Leitrim 0-3

Last Saturday evening in Ballyhaunis a very strong Mayo team dominated from the beginning and Leitrim struggled for long periods in the game.

Mayo got off to a flying start and had scored 8 points in the first 22 minutes, Liam Irwin for Mayo scored a goal and a point in this period while Padraig Pendergast hit over twice with Liam Noone (free) and Michael Plunkett adding a point each.

It was in the 24th minute before Leitrim eventually got their first score with a point from Michael Clancy but Mayo went on to increase their lead with points from Plunkett, Ronan Carolan and Irwin (free) to put the home-side ahead by 1-8 to 0-1 at half time.

Three minutes into the second half Mayo increased their lead with a point from Ronan Carolan which was soon followed by a free scored by Conor Gaffney giving Leitrim their 2nd point in the game. Leitrim were unfortunate not to have scored a goal by sub Daire Farrell who drove a 38th minute goal chance wide. Two minutes later Leitrim scored their third point in the game by Shane McGowan and after that Mayo took complete control for the last 20 minutes of the game when hitting four points without reply. Pendergast added two points, sub Cian Hanley getting one and a free scored by Liam Irwin in the 58th minute.

Next Saturday Leitrim will face table leaders Galway in Pairc Sean MacDiarmad in their last game in the Connacht Minor League Campaign. This will be a tough game for them as I am sure confidence is low after the game last Saturday so it would be great and very much appreciated if you would come out and get behind the team so we can put it up to Galway.
