Dunnes Bar ACL Division 1 – It was a great start to the league for the seniors with a good performance against Leitrim Gaels on a beautiful evening in the Pairc. The lads were always in control despite the contentious early sending off of Shane Moran in the first half. With the reduction to 14, the lads continued to play some excellent football and led by a score of 0:7 to 0:4 at halftime. Ballinamore again started well in the second half and remained in control with some excellent long range shooting with Niall McGovern scoring a couple of wonderful points to help kill off the Gaels fight back. The final score was Ballinamore 0:13 Leitrim Gaels 0:11. Next up is Gaeil na Meilge on Saturday at 1830 in the Pairc.

New Referees – Good news for the club is that two club members have completed the course for new referees. Darren Reynolds and Brian Beirne will be taking up the whistle at matches shortly. It is some time since anyone from the club has taken up refereeing. Go n-éirí go geal leis an mbeirt acu

Dunnes Bar ACL Division 2 – Our Division two team started their campaign against Cloone at the weekend and were narrowly defeated by a score off 2:08 to 1:09. Next up is Gaeil na Meilge on Sunday at 1200 in the Pairc

Barna Recycling U13 League – Our u13s were defeated on Thursday last by a much more experienced St Marys side. The game was even enough at halftime with the scoreline 2.2 to 3 in favour of the home side. The second half saw St Marys take control of the game, but fair play to our lads they never gave up and fought right to the end. A Few goal chances presented themselves but unfortunately for us we were unable to convert. It ended on a scoreline of 5.13 to 5, one which did not show a true reflection of the lads’ efforts. We hit the scoreboard first with brilliant points from Paul Honeyman and our Captain of the day Naoise McManus. Dromahair fought back level with two great score of their own. For 10mins the game was stale mate with end to end action with neither team able to take the advantage due to fine defending from both sides. Gavin Darcy finally broke the deadlock with a might long range effort which sailed over the bar. We began to pull ahead after a well worked team goal finished brilliantly by Paul Honeyman. Further scores from Louis Quinn and Michael McBrien and yet another goal this time by Naoise meant we had a comfortable lead of 2-6 to 4 goin into the second half. All of which came from hard work and pressure our midfielders Gavin and Tommy Smith put on the Dromahair kick out. The Club and Social Media – Over the last number of years our club has begun to embrace the positive aspects of social media as a portal for interacting with friends and followers.

We were one of the first clubs in the county to set up a Facebook page and over the last 12 months, we have seen exceptional growth in the number of people that interact with us using Facebook.

It is hard to imagine how Facebook can help a club be more successful on the pitch and of course, Facebook “likes” do not win Championships! but it is certainly no stretch of the imagination to see that Facebook has had a positive impact on our interaction with our community across the world and has assisted the club in raising its profile in a positive way.

A recent example of the power of social media was number of interactions we had during our promotion of Strictly Come Dancing and our ability to Sell this to potential sponsors where we linked to their pages and were able to give them exposure in part return for the goodwill and Sponsorship we received

If we take a look at some numbers, this will hopefully go some way to explaining the size of the exposure we are getting

  • 1739 Likes – These are people from all corners of the world that have followed our page and see our posts – This number has increased by 700 followers in the last 12 months
  • 47,775 Total Reach – This is the number of people that viewed, interacted or liked our posts – Not over the last year – But in November
  • 4629 Page Views – Again this was in November
  • Likes and Interactions – 36,451 people interacted with our posts during the month of November
  • Videos 13,276 people viewed our videos during the month of November

You might ask who are our followers? Well 52% of our Followers are Female with 48% male and 27% of those are between 25 and 44 years of age.

We can tell you that most people that like our page are in Dublin, 476 to be exact with 344 in Ballinamore and well, we even have 8 followers in Aughnasheelin just slightly ahead of the six we have in Perth.

If we look closely at where our followers reside it’s probably an indication of the numbers of people over the years who have left our town either for good or the short term and how they use Facebook to remain a part of our club and community.

For instance, we have friends in 27 countries around the world! 123 in the UK, 58 in the USA, 16 in Australia, 5 in Spain and 4 in Canada and even one in Colombia

Many people may still ask what’s the point of social media in a GAA club in Leitrim, but what I can tell you is that over the last 12 months we have used it to share the good times and the not so good times, from Wins, Losses, Births and Deaths its helped bring our community that’s now spread around the world closer.

We have streamed games live and had people watching our victory parades from all around the world, we have used it to share our match updates, pictures and videos and even to sell club merchandise. Based on the interaction and the feedback we are getting it’s something we will continue to do in the future and hopefully we will try and embrace the use of Social Media further in 2018 and get the opportunity to stream a senior County Final Live.
