Corofin proved much too good for Leitrim champions Mohill in a one sided Connacht Club Semi-final in Cloone on Sunday.

Mohill made life reasonably difficult for Corofin for most of the first half as it took the Galway side quite some time to get to grips with their Leitrim opponents.

Defences were on top early on with the result after the first quarter Kieran Comer for Corofin and Colm Beirne for Mohill had only swapped a point each.

Mohill took the lead for the first an only time in the showdown when Seamus McCrann shot a point in the seventeenth minute.

A Trevor Burke goal for Corofin in the twenty-eight minute put the Galway men ahead by 1 ? 2 to 0 ? 2.

Kieran Comer added two points to put Corofin further in front by 1 ? 4 to 0 ? 2 at the interval.

When Stephen Conaty shot a spectacular goal nine minutes after the restart it looked like that a Mohill comeback was on the cards.

But Corofin took total command for then on hitting seven unanswered points before final whistle with Gary Sice finding the target twice while David Morris, Emmett Killeen, Aidan Donnellan, Kieran Comer and Thomas Costello added a point each.

Mohill were reduced to fourteen players before the end when Seamus McCrann was dismissed for two yellow card offences.

Connacht Clubs Football Semi-Final

Best wishes are pouring in from Leitrim supporters as Leitrim Champions, Mohill, face the Galway Champions, Corofin, in the Connacht Clubs Football Semifinal in Cloone on Sunday at 2:30pm.

Its a number of weeks since Mohill played their county final and the extended delay is something they will have had to contend with. They have however filled that time span with their participation in the ACL 1 League.

Sundays enounter will be tough as the only advantage that Mohill have is the familairity and size of Cloone. Corofin have played in the Connacht Clubs in recent years and will have more experience at this level.

The winners progress with a chance to play either St. Brigids or Crossmolina in the final. Their semifinal is also on Sunday in the Hyde park in Roscommon as Kiltoom, St. Brigids home ground, is under development.

Bes of luck to all in what will be 2 lively encounters.

In addition the League Competition headings is now clickable and will bring you directly to the respective competition table. The League Team names are also clickable so when a team name is chosen a filtered view of results and known fixtures is displayed for that particular team.

[b]GAA National Coaching Conference[/b]
The 4th annual GAA coaching conference will this year be hosted in Croke park from Friday, November 24th to Sunday November 26th. This year a new dimension has been added and for the first time the conference will address key medical issues specific to player welfare.

The conference will be officially opened on Friday evening with two discussion topics. On Saturday the conference programme will combine a cross sectional theme targeting coaches, administrators and referees as part of the GAA games development CARE foundation. This year the conference will also include a full GAA suppliers exhibition village. Cost this year will be 75 Euro per delegate. All clubs should check out the programme as there is something of interest for everyone including topics on pitch maintainance.

[b]Hurling Coaching session[/b]
Paudi Butler, the recently appointed National Director of hurling and Damien Coleman, Hurling Manager for Connacht gave a coaching session for coaches in St.Marys GAA grounds on Thursday night last. With the help of young Hurlers from Manorhamilton and St.Marys clubs and coaches from the four hurling clubs and the camogie club, it was a successful evening. Paudi will return in early 2007 to give a follow up session.

Roscommon champions Athleague proved too strong for Leitrim kingpins, St. Mary?s in Saturday?s lively Connacht senior club hurling semi-final, which was played in ideal weather conditions in Athleague.

Athleague, who will face recently crowned Galway champions Loughrea in the Connacht final on Sunday November 19, took control of this game early in the first half after Brendan Boyle shot to the St. Mary?s net.

St. Mary?s trailed by 1 – 4 to 1 – 8 at the interval and managed to cut Athleague?s lead back to three points early in the second half but after that the Roscommon side upped the pace and won convincingly.

Scotland record historic Croke Park victory

There was a Leitrim connection as Clement Cuniffe and James Clancy participated in the Shinty comptition as Scotland collected their first Croke Park win over Ireland on a 2-13 to 2-5 scoreline after a high-skilled and entertaining international clash at Headquarters on Sunday.

The visitors ground-hurling skills were perhaps the difference in the end as the Irish side struggled to come to terms with the illegality of handling the sliotar.

Gary Innes, of the Fort William club, fired the Scots into an early four-point lead with two well taken scores off the ground from dead-ball situations.

Sean Silkes Ireland did fight back with a point from sharpshooter Kevin McGarry and a goal from Kerrys JohnÓgriffin to leave the sides level at 1-1 to 0-4 after 18 minutes.

The second quarter, however, saw Scotland impose their dominance. A wonderful interchange of ground hurling ended with Victor Smith striking a clean shot to the roof of Graham Clarkes net in the 27th minute.

Kevin Thain and Ronald Ross, both of the Kingussie club, added a further three points to the Scottish tally to leave Ireland facing a six-point deficit at the interval.

It was a clean but physical first half with a lot of timber being broken and the Scots sticks standing up better in the challenge.

After the break, Fermanaghs McGarry kept Ireland in touch and when Kildares Paudie Reidy scored a goal in the 66th minute, after great work by Leitrims James Glancy, it seemed as though a comeback was on the cards.

Any resurgence, though, was quickly quashed when, a minute later, some excellent dribbling from Ross ended with a goal for the Scots.

Substitute Gordon MacKinnon then added another two-pointer for the visitors as the Irish challenge faded.

Big Entry for Scór na mBunscoileanna

There has been a big increase in the number of schools participating in Scór na mBunscoileanna this year. Entries are up 50% with sixteen schools about to participate. Since Scór na mBunscoileanna started two years ago it was possible to run it off in one night. However this year there will be two nights of competition and the good news is that Coiste Scór Liatroma have decided that the winners on both nights will get medals. Each night will be run independent of the other, there will be no County Final as such, but the winners of each competition on both nights will receive medals.

This year there will be a plaque for presentation to the best school overall. The plaque has been donated by the MacGiolla Family to commemorate the late Cormac MacGiolla who was the man who initiated Scór na mBunscoileanna just two years ago. Since then it has developed countrywide.

There are two new competitions this year: solo music and solo dance and these have also generated great interest. Each school is being asked to have one person with them who would help at stewarding on the night. Each night will start with Tr?th na gCeisteanna at 6.30 promptly. The other events will start with Rince Foirne at 7.00 sharp. The venues and schools taking part are as follows:

Innovative Fundraising Drive for Leitrim GAA

[b]Leitrim GAA Supporters launch Innovative Fundraising Drive to Rebuild P?irc Se?n MacDiarmada[/b]

An innovative fundraising initiative was launched today in Carrick-on-Shannon by supporters of Leitrim GAA to raise ?1.5m to complete the redevelopment of P?irc Se?n MacDiarmada.

The fundraising will pay for a 3,000 seat covered stand, four new dressing rooms, shower rooms, training area, meeting rooms, kitchen and canteen and press facilities. The new facilities will replace those provided when the stadium was originally opened in 1964 and are badly needed to bring the stadium up to modern standards.
The new facilities will cost ?3m in total. Preliminary funding of ?1.5m has already been secured from the Department of Arts Sport and Tourism and the GAA. An additional ?1.5m is required and this fundraising drive is aimed at the loyal Leitrim GAA supporters and friends. All donations are tax efficient and this appeal is looking for Leitrim people living all over Ireland and overseas to give a one off donation to provide state of the art GAA facilities for the coming decades.

The fundraising initiative is titled ?Get on the Team? and it gives Leitrim people a chance to be involved in safeguarding the future of Leitrim?s GAA headquarters for many years to come. Donations start from as little as ?580 to ?14,500 for 42% PAYE taxpayers and from ?800 to ?20,000 if you are a 20% taxpayer. The ?14,500 donated by a 40% PAYE taxpayer will actually translate to ?25,000 as the development is approved for tax relief purposes. A ?20,000 donation by a 20% taxpayer will mean a ?25,000 donation.

The generosity of donors will be commemorated by a permanent plaque that will be prominently displayed on the wall at the entrance to Pairc Se?n. There are gold, silver, bronze, green, yellow and white teams which represent the amount donated. (For example, a ?25,000 donation secures your place on the gold team?etc)

Speaking today, Leitrim GAA County Board Chairman Gerry McGovern said: ?This redevelopment will not only provide Leitrim GAA with a superb new Headquarters but it will also greatly reflect the positive and vibrant attitude that exists among the people of Leitrim and considerably enhance the image of Carrick-on-Shannon and the County in general. We are calling on Leitrim people everywhere to get behind this fundraising drive to give us a stadium of which we can all be proud of for years to come.?

Players representing the present and future of Leitrim GAA were in attendance at Pairc Se?n to lend support to the fundraising drive. The senior, U-21 and minor players were in Carrick-on-Shannon as were the captains of the ladies football minor and senior teams. 2006 was a relatively successful one on the pitch for Leitrim, with the senior team reaching the Tommy Murphy Cup final and the ladies winning the Connacht junior final before losing out to Sligo in the All-Ireland final.

Coaching News

Hurling Coaching Session.

Paudi Butler the recently appointed director of hurling, will give a coaching workshop on Thursday evening next in the sports complex Ck ?on ? Shannon, commencing at 6 pm. Paudi will work with a group of young hurlers where coaches can observe and from approx 7.15pm he will work with the coaches themselves and also speak with club administrators . This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in Hurling or camogie to come along, watch and listen to what Paudi has to say. We would welcome any Teacher?s , primary and post primary to come along also.

Development Squads.

Our development squad sessions for this season concluded on Saturday last with an under 14 blitz in Curry, Co. Sligo. The Leitrim squad had a successful day, defeating squads from Sligo and Fermanagh, loosing only to Roscommon in their last game. The team were short players from St. Mary?s, and Sean O? Heslins due to the under 16 final . We in coaching would like to thank all players involved in the squads for this year and wish them well in the future. We would also like to thank team mentors Martin Mc Gowan, Jerome Quinn, Barney Breen, James Holohan and Eamon Mc Gowan for all the work they put into the squads during the year.

Post Primary 2nd year Blitz

Drumshanbo Vocational school won the Michael Mc Guinness shield, when they beat Drumkeerin Vocational school in the final of this blitz day played last week in Drumshanbo. Teams from Mohill and Carrigallen Vocational schools along with a team from the Marion College, Mohill took part in the Blitz. Their were many fine individual performances on the day and all schools can be pleased with their teams. Denise Sorohan, Captain of the Drumshanbo team accepted the Michael Mc Guinness Shield on behalf of her team and her performances in every game suggest that she will be playing Ladies Inter County before long. Well done to all who took part.
