Connacht Vocational Schools A final

For the second year in a row the Leitrim senior Vocational schools team have reached the Connacht A final. On Friday last they beat last year’s winners Galway in the semi-final and play Mayo in the final on Friday next at 2pm in the new GAA centre of excellence, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. All support would be very welcome and we wish players and management the best of luck.

Connacht GAA Bursary awards

31 Bursaries have been awarded to promising young Connacht GAA players in the province’s annual bursary scheme. Each of the five Connacht counties is represented in the initiative which provides financial assistance to students who have displayed potential and commitment on the gaelic games front in their respective colleges.Congrats to three young Leitrim GAA players, Micheal Ferguson, Glenfarne GAA club, Shane Quinn, Mohill GAA club and Shane Sweeney, Manorhamilton GAA club who were presented with their awards at the cermony in Claremorris on Saturday last.

Coaching & Child Protection Standards

Leitrim Coaching & Games committee are asking all clubs to ensure that all coaches appointed at their AGM’s have a minimum of foundation level qualification, complete the child welfare & protection course and be Garda vetted before they start coaching. To assist clubs in complying with this request the following courses are taking place.

Foundation award dates

February 2012 ‘ Drumkeerin on Monday 6th & Tuesday 7th

Clubs are asked to book places for this course by Wednesday evening, 01st at the latest.

Child Welfare & Protection course

February 2012 ‘ Bush Hotel on Friday 03rd

February 2012 ‘ Drumkeerin on Wednesday 15th

As we have a large number of applications for the course on Friday 3rd February, we will run two courses on the night which will allow us accomadate more coaches.

Booking for both these courses is essential as places will be limited.

Garda Vetting

Club officers should ensure that all coaches coaching in their club have completed Garda vetting and have a copy on file of the coaches approval letter from Croke Park. Application forms for Garda vetting will be made available at all upcoming foundation award and award 1 courses. For existing qualified coaches who have yet to complete the vetting application, contact your club coaching officer, County coaching officer or download from gaa.ie.

Completed application forms must be returned to Thomas Keenan, Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, Ck-on-Shannon and not to Croke Park or the Garda vetting unit.

Award 1 Coaching course

For those coaches who have completed the foundation award and wish to progress up the coaching ladder we will be conducting an Award 1 course for all three strands, Child, Youth and Adult in March 2012. For the practical modules of the award 1 course we will visit the coaches and conduct the sessions with the coach while he/she is coaching their club team. Details will be confirmed when courses commence.
