U14 LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONS – Last Friday evening our U-14 ladies lined out in Páirc Seán in the 15 a side championship final.  They faced a hotly fancied Glencar-Manorhamilton side who were aiming for the remarkable achievement of a 5th U-14 title in a row.   St. Mary’s had been comprehensively beaten by the Glencar-Manor side in the group stages but St. Mary’s were hopeful that they could redress the balance in the final.
St. Mary’s started strongly scoring 2 goals and a couple of points in quick succession in first 10 minutes.   Glencar-Manor were not going to sit back and after a sharp attack a high ball ended up in the back of the net.  This was followed by a point to narrow the gap.  The game continued in this vein with end to end play; however, the St. Mary’s defence worked exceptionally hard to absorb the Glencar Manor threat and went in at halftime with a healthy lead.
St. Mary’s again dominated the opening exchanges after the break and controlled the game for most of the second half.  They had opened up a 12 point lead going into the final five minutes of the game.  However, Glencar-manor showed their true spirit and never-say-die attitude by scoring 2-1 in the closing stages to narrow the gap to 5 points in the end.  However, St. Mary’s again showed their composure with players dropping back to crowd the defence, turn over the attacks and calmly extend the play down the field in order to relieve the pressure.  St Mary’s and Glencar Manorhamilton served up an excellent hour of football.  Both panels should be extremely proud of themselves. Well done to every girl on the St Mary’s panel.  They worked extremely hard over the course of the season and should all be very proud of themselves.  Thanks to the club for providing refreshments in the clubhouse after the game.
