The Late Fr. Bernard Doyle RIP
Fr. Bernard Doyle, Gortermone, Carrigallen RIP
Coiste Chontae Liatroma CLG joins with the people of the county and in particular with the GAA units at every level, in expressing our condolences to Fr Bernard Doyle’s brother Sean, sister in law Bridget and to all the Doyle extended family; to Bishop Martin Hayes and the priests and religious of Kilmore diocese; to Fr Doyle’s former parishioners to whom he dedicated his priestly life as their pastor.
As well as his priestly duties, Fr Bernard worked diligently to become one with his people and to use his influence to spur young and old to be the very best they could be. He was particularly interested in sporting activity and worked tirelessly to provide proper facilities and opportunities in his various parishes.
An extremely talented footballer, he won Leitrim Senior Championships with the famed Melvin Gaels Club of the 1950’s and 60’s and was a stalwart of the Leitrim teams of the same era, lining out at centre half forward in the Connacht Senior Championship Finals of 1957 and 1958 and being part of the county team that played Derry in the National League Semi Final in Croke Park in 1959.
Fr Bernard was a popular choice for the position of Chairman of the County Board and he took up this role in 1963 and served a three year term. He led the Board with a firm hand, was a strict disciplinarian but fair in all his dealings with clubs and players and supporters.
Is trua go bhfuil Fr Bernard imithe uainn: go raibh a anam uasal dílis ar dheis lámh Dé.
