Hurling in Leitrim ? The way forward
A very successful meeting was held on Thursday last with lots of discussion and debate on the development of Hurling. County Board Chairman Gerry McGovern and Secretary Declan Bohan attended the meeting and their contribution proved in-valuable. New arrangements and dates for competitions and also under 12 club blitz days along with primary school blitz days will be put in place for 2007. All underage hurling fixtures will now appear in the Coiste na nÓg fixtures calendar. To increase the number of Primary schools receiving coaching we will be recruiting at least one new hurling coach over the next few weeks. We will also asking clubs to assist us by introducing Hurling to their under 8 and 10 year olds. Not all children want to play football only and we should offer them every opportunity to play one of the best games in the world. Lets all move forward.

Paudi will work with a group of young hurlers where coaches can observe and from approx 7.15pm he will work with the coaches themselves and also speak with club administrators . This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in Hurling or camogie to come along, watch and listen to what Paudi has to say. We would welcome any Teacher?s , primary and post primary to come along also.

Development Squads.

Our development squad sessions for this season concluded on Saturday last with an under 14 blitz in Curry, Co. Sligo. The Leitrim squad had a successful day, defeating squads from Sligo and Fermanagh, loosing only to Roscommon in their last game. The team were short players from St. Mary?s, and Sean O? Heslins due to the under 16 final . We in coaching would like to thank all players involved in the squads for this year and wish them well in the future. We would also like to thank team mentors Martin Mc Gowan, Jerome Quinn, Barney Breen, James Holohan and Eamon Mc Gowan for all the work they put into the squads during the year.

Post Primary 2nd year Blitz

Drumshanbo Vocational school won the Michael Mc Guinness shield, when they beat Drumkeerin Vocational school in the final of this blitz day played last week in Drumshanbo. Teams from Mohill and Carrigallen Vocational schools along with a team from the Marion College, Mohill took part in the Blitz. Their were many fine individual performances on the day and all schools can be pleased with their teams. Denise Sorohan, Captain of the Drumshanbo team accepted the Michael Mc Guinness Shield on behalf of her team and her performances in every game suggest that she will be playing Ladies Inter County before long. Well done to all who took part.

Development squads.
Both our U14 and U15 Football squads were in action over the weekend. The under 14 panel played Fermanagh in a very entertaining challange. Played over 80 min. duration Fermanagh came out on top, however Leitrim after going behind early on closed the gap and performed well after a slow start. The under U15 squad played both Sligo and Roscommon in a blitz in Roscommon and after very close games came out on top in both.

County Finals
Congrats to Mohill,Carrigallen and Eslin who all won County titles over the past week.

Media News
Sad to hear that Seamus Duke is leaving Shannonside radio. Seamus was always very helpfull with news items and events and had a hugh interest in all sporting events especially GAA. We in Leitrim Coaching wish Seamus well for the future.

We are in a time of major change in Leitrim with our on field activites advancing and our infrastructural developments also progressing. In line with this change we are looking to introduce a new County GAA crest for the 2007 season and we want your help !

Up to now the county council crest has been used by Coiste Chontae Liatroma and we would like to have our own unique registered crest in line with most other counties.

In order to develop a crest that portrays Leitrim in a unique way we would like to hear from anyone who has suggestions as to what should be incorporated onto the crest or any other suggestions as to design or even a motto for the crest.

Some counties have used historical features that are associated with the county such as Kerry and the Round Tower in Ballyduff or the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary. Others have used more abstract artistic designs.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for the new crest please submit them to Oifigeach Cult?ir agus Teanga – Se?n ?suilleabh?in, Aghadark, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim (071) 9644227

or email seanoheslin GAA@eircom.net

We wish to complete this exercise as soon as possible so please put your thinking caps on and get in touch !

Development Squads
Mixed fortunes for our development squads at the weekend.

Our under 14 Hurlers were beaten in both their games at a blitz in Padraig pearses GAA grounds, Roscommon on Saturday last. The manner in which we were beaten by both Roscommon and Westmeath was most dissapointing and suggests that we must review our complete hurling structure at underage in the County.

Our under 15 footballers faired much better in Castlebar, also on Saturday last, when they beat selections from Donegal and Sligo but lost out by a point to a very strong Galway selection. Next outing for this squad is on Saturday 14/10/07 when they play in a blitz in Roscommon.

Under 10 Blitz
On Saturday next, the concluding under 10 blitz will be held in Annaduff and St.Marys GAA grounds.
St.Marys…. St.Marys,Bornacoola,Aughavas,Cloone and
Kiltubrid.

Annaduff… Dromahaire,Manorhamilton,Annaduff,Mohill and Aughawillan/Drumreilly.

Please note only one hop and one solo allowed before ball must be played.
