Leitrim GAA is saddened is learn of the death, on Saturday morning, of Vincent O Rourke (Senior), Corrabarrick, Keshcarrigan, Co. Leitrim and Fenagh St. Caillin’s GAA Club. Vincent is the father of the current Leitrim GAA Management Committee Member and Secretary of CCC Liatroma Vincent(Junior). He is also the grandfather of current Leitrim Senior Footballers Ryan and Riordan and Ryan and Leitrim Minor Footballer Ruairi, who all lined out for the county over the past weekend. It would have been a source of great pride to Vincent to see the progress made by his grandsons with Leitrim GAA teams over recent years.

The late Vincent O Rourke was all things to all people over his lifetime of service to Fenagh St Caillin’s GAA Club and indeed to Ladies Football in its formative years and for many years since.

As a footballer, Vincent first came to prominence as a wing-back on a star-studded Fenagh Minor Football team which won back-to-back Minor Championships in 1950 and ’51. Their success was little wonder, with the assistance of a strong Mohill/Gorvagh contingent consisting of, among others, Packy McGarty, Cathal Flynn and Eddie Rowley assisting the local stars of Vincent, Jimmy Mc Keon, Colm Heeran, Jimmy Bland, Anslem Reynolds and Michael Mc Hugh. In 1952 Vincent graduated to the Senior ranks and played in, his, and indeed Fenagh’s only Senior Championship final of the decade, where they were soundly beaten by Aughavas, Vincent’s playing career continued up until the mid 1960’s without much club playing success – emigration was taking its toll.

Despite Vincent’s exploits on the playing field. it may well be his legacy in club administration that stands the test of time. For nearly 70 years Fenagh played their football in Ellis’ field. In the early 1970’s the county board decreed it as unsuitable for adult football and the search was on for a new pitch. Numerous sub-committees looked at various options and eventually, a new committee which was appointed in 1980 with Vincent as Chairman and Hugh Maguire as Secretary, decided to move the scope of their search away from the village area. This was a game changer and they rapidly secured the current pitch, from local man, John Cassidy. With purchase and development costs coming in under, at what nowadays would be considered a paltry €70,000, the new Páirc Seán Ó Laodain opened in 1985. Vincent O Rourke was the powerhouse driver and motivator for the project, not only in its procurement, but in fund-raising, development, official opening and maintenance. Without his commitment and energy, it would never have happened at this time. For the next 30 years, he was caretaker and gatekeeper and never wavered in his commitment to the club. Páirc Seán Ó Laodáin remains to this day one of the finest playing surfaces in the county which is a fine testament to Vincent’s vision and ambition over four decades ago.

Ladies’ Football began to become organised within the county in 1978. From, the beginning Vincent was involved and trained the local club ladies as they won the first-ever official Ladies competition in Leitrim in 1978. In 1979 Leitrim LGFA formed its own County Committee and Vincent’s commitment to the Ladies’ game was recognised as he was elected as first-ever Chairperson of both Fenagh Ladies Club and the first-ever Chairperson of Leitrim LGFA. Over the following years, he continued as the trainer/coach of Fenagh Ladies teams at all levels.

Vincent will be remembered as an outstanding player, motivator and administrator of the club over his entire long life. Away from the GAA he was essentially a great family man, political enthusiast and with his wonderful clear and lucid mind and memory a source for local historians and family researchers right up to his final brief illness.

Vincent, predeceased by his late wife Tessie and granddaughter Joanna, is survived by his sons, Vincent Jr, Shane, Denis, Michael, Bobby, his daughters, Theresa, Ronnie, Maura, Rina, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends. We extend our hearfelt sympathy to all.

Columba Cryan – Legendary Leitrim Footballer – ar shlí na Firinne

Columba Cryan, a legendary figure on the Ballinamore and Leitrim football scene in the 1950s, passed away today, 5 May 2024.

Throughout 1950s, Columba was recognised one of Leitrim’s finest players, playing either at midfield or full forward. In 1952, Leitrim regraded to Junior, meaning that they opted out of the senior championship to concentrate on junior. It was a move which paid off as they won the Connacht Junior title. The All-Ireland semi-final was played in Pairc Sheáin Ui Eislin, before a reputed 5,000 attendance and, with Columba Cryan at full forward, Leitrim defeated Tipperary by 2-5 to 0-5. The final against Meath was in Breffni Park, but Leitrim lost.

Ten years later, in 1962, Leitrim again won the Connacht Junior title and Columba Cryan won his second Connacht Junior medal.

However, it was at senior level that Columba made his name as an outstanding player for Leitrim. In that glorious period (1957-1960) when Leitrim played in four Connacht finals in a row, all against Galway, Columba was a central figure in all of them. The nearest Leitrim got was to lose by two points in 1958, when Columba shaved the upright in the dying minutes. Columba’s brother-in-law, Leo Heslin from Aughavas, was a teammate on the Leitrim team in those years.

Leitrim’s most successful year ever, at National League level, came in 1959, when they reached the semi final, at a time when there were no divisions based on strength. Leitrim lost to Derry in Croke Park on that occasion, the only time Columba Cryan lined out for Leitrim in Pairc an Chrócaigh.

Ballinamore won the Senior Championship in 1956, largely due to a great midfield pairing of Columba Cryan and Brian Sweeney.  For many many years, Columba and Brian travelled to matches together, no doubt reliving the great games they played together. Columba was captain of that 1956 winning team and his brother Josie was centre-half back.

Columba was the only Ballinamore player to possess a coveted Railway Cup medal. He was on the Connacht panel when they won in the years 1957 and 1958.

Our sympathy to Columba’s wife, Kay, to his daughters, Fiona, Síne, Lisa, Pam and son Columba.

Suaimhneas na bhFlaitheas do cheann de na peileadóirí ab fhearr a d’imir le Liatroim agus cumann Sheáin Úi Eislin, Béal an Átha Móir.

Reposing on Monday, 6th May, at Smith’s Funeral Home, High St., Ballinamore, N41 TD62, from 4pm until 6.30pm. Removal on Tuesday, 7th May, from his home to arrive at St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore, for Funeral Mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Oughteragh Cemetery, Ballinamore.

LEITRIM 5 – 6      OFFALY 1 – 8

Leitrim began their 2024 Fr. Manning Cup campaign with a hard fought victory over Offaly on Saturday at Philly McGuinness Park in Mohill.   Played in near perfect conditions, both teams began the game minus a number of players still involved with their respective U17 teams.
Leitrim started the better of the teams, dominating early possession.   As in 2023, one of the standout characteristics of this team was their work ethic.   On numerous occasions in the first half, the platform for Leitrim attacks was founded on some wonderful turnovers of Offaly with Conor Duignan and Thomas Gunn particularly prominent in that department.   Conor Reynolds opened the scoring for Leitrim with a fine point after 4 minutes.   In the next 10 minutes, Leitrim put distance between the teams adding 2-1 to their tally with the goals coming courtesy of Conor Reynolds (penalty) and Mark Nolan, and a further point from Conor Reynolds.   Offaly got their first score after 18 minutes before Mark Nolan replied with a free.   5 minutes before the break Offaly were thrown a lifeline when they found room behind the Leitrim defence to score a much needed goal.   Leitrim’s response was swift and they put together a great team move involving Ultan McNulty, Gearoid Curley and Mark Nolan to get Conor Reynolds free in front of goals.   He was hauled down by some last ditch defending from Offaly and he duly dispatched the resultant penalty to give Leitrim an 8 point cushion.   The final word of the half was left to Offaly as they converted a 30 metre free to leave the half time scoreline Leitrim 3-3  Offaly 1-2.
Offaly began the 2nd half in more assertive fashion with the introduction of 4 members of their U17 squad.   They started to gain parity in the middle of the park which resulted in more pressure on the Leitrim defence.    A sustained period of pressure led to Offaly opening the scoring in the 2nd half with a well taken point.   Senan McGowan replied for Letrim from a free as Offaly started to expose gaps in the Leitrim defence. In the 8th and 14th minute Offaly added 2 further points to their tally from placed balls.   In between those scores Offaly created some goal scoring opportunities only to be denied by some good saves by Scott Kerr and some stout defending by Charlie Slevin and Cillian McWeeney.   Offaly were made to pay for these misses when Leitrim broke up an Offaly and after 3 quick accurate kick passes, half time substitute Jack Attard rifled the ball to the top corner to snuff out any possibility of an Offaly comeback. From then until the end of the game Leitrim wrestled back control of the game as both teams emptied the bench.   Leitrim added a point through Jack Attard and goal through Gearoid Curley in reply to 3 further Offaly points.   Senan McGowan completed the scoring with a free kick from 45 metres to leave Leitrim with a 10 point cushion at the final whistle.
LEITRIM: Scott Kerr; Cillian McWeeney; Charlie Slevin; Ronan Connolly; Ultan McNulty; Ross O’Shea; Darragh O’Boyle; Conor Duignan; Thomas Gunn; Senan McGowan (0-2); Gearoid Curley (1-0); Louis Quinn; Mark Nolan (1-0); Ronan Fox; Conor Reynolds (2-2).  SUBS: Jack Attard (1-1), John McGarry, Nathan Casey, Keelan McGurrin, Cuan O Tonra, Daniel Gilrane, Oisin McGarry, Aaron Gibney, Shane Mayock and Rhionn Gallagher.
