We needed a win in our final group game to progress to the next stage of the tournament but came up against a stronger Ardara team from Donegal who won comfortably. U12 – St Joseph’s U12s played two rounds of the Longford/Leitrim league this week. The first game took place in Aughavas against Grattan Gaels on Monday evening. At halftime St Joseph’s were trailing by four points but they put in a very determined performance in the second half to go into the lead and seemed to be heading for victory but unfortunately a late flurry of goals from their opponents in the last five minutes meant that they lost out on a final scoreline of St Joseph’s 5-07 Grattan Gaels 6-08. This was a  heartbreaking defeat for St Josephs who had the win snatched from their grasp in the dying minutes of the game. Hopefully, a harsh lesson learned. On Thursday evening, we travelled to Newtowncashel to take on Southern Gaels. Playing against the strong breeze in the first half the St Joseph’s defence put in a determined showing in the first twenty minutes to only trail by a point at that stage, but unfortunately their resistance cracked as the half wore on and the concession of a few soft scores left our lads trailing by 3-04 to 0-03 at halftime. With the wind advantage, a good start to the second half was required but St Joseph’s never got going and Southern Gaels won out comfortably on a final scoreline of 6-11 to 1-05. We round off our games in the competition with an away game against Colmcille on Thursday evening.

U12 – St Joseph’s U12s played St Brigids in Aughavas on Thursday evening in the second round of the Longford-Leitrim league. The teams were tied at halftime but in the second half St Brigids gradually began to dominate and with the help of two late goals in quick succession won out on a final scoreline of St Josephs 3-12 St Brigids 5-14. It was a much-improved performance from St Josephs but St Brigid’s were deserving winners. The schoolboy’s team took part in the Turlough Conefrey Memorial Tournament on Sunday where we lost to Aughavas and had a win against Cloone. U12’s – St Joseph’s U12 team took part in the Colmcille U12 tournament on Saturday. They played the hosts Colmcille in the first game and put in a battling performance to earn a draw. The next opponents were a skillful Granard side who made our lads pay for the concession of two soft goals in the first half and who ran out winners by 5 points. The final opponents in the group were Ardagh and the lads put in their best performance of the day to win by a comfortable margin. This meant we were into the Cup quarter-finals where we come up against a strong Mullahoran team who proved too strong for our lads despite a much improved second half display. Thanks to Colmcille for the invitation and congratulations on organising such a well run competition which was enjoyed by all present.

Barna Recycling U13 Shield Final – St Joseph’s U13’s finished up their league campaign by facing Dromahair in the Division 1 shield final in sun-kissed Aughavas on Friday evening. Dromahair made a blistering start to the game and had 2 goals and a point on the scoreboard before St Joseph’s registered their first score with a point midway through the half. At halftime, Dromahair had a three-point lead and would need a big second-half performance if they were to come away with the victory. The second half was tit for tat the whole way through and after a very close and hard fought encounter St Joseph’s emerged winners on a final scoreline of 2-11 to 3-04. Well done to St Joseph’s for producing a good team performance when the pressure came on from a very spirited and talented Dromahair team. Playing against a strong breeze in the 1st half and despite the concession of a soft early goal, our lads performed very well and went in level at half time. However, we never got going in the 2nd half and the visitors ran out deserving winners on a score line of St. Joseph’s 1-09 Allen Gaels 3-05. We now meet  the winners of Fenagh st Caillin’s v Mohill  In the shield final next  Saturday  time & venue to be confirmed.

Unfortunately for St Joseph’s we came up against a determined home team who took the spoils on a final score line of Glencar Manor 3-6 St Joseph’s 0-11. It was a case of so near yet so far for our lads who overcame a 6 point halftime deficit to draw level with 5 minutes to go but just couldn’t get their noses in front and the concession of a late goal turned the game decisively for the Manorhamilton lads. Well done to both teams and referee for providing a hard fought but sporting encounter given the conditions where the second half was played in a downpour. Best of luck to Glencar Manor in the semi final.

Barna Recycling U13’s – St Josephs U13s played two games during the past week. First up was Dromahaire in Aughavas on Tuesday evening. Our lads were very slow to get going in the first half and went in at halftime three points down. As the second half went on they raised their game considerably and ended up winning on a scoreline of 6-11 to 4-04. The final scoreline flattered our lads a little as it was only in the last seven or eight minutes that they pulled clear of a determined Dromahaire team. This win meant that if they could win the last regular league game that they would qualify for the league semi-final. Leitrim Gaels were our opponents in the final round game in Leitrim Village on Good Friday evening. This was a tightly fought encounter between two evenly matched sides. Leitrim Gaels had wind advantage in the first half and the St Josephs lads started the game very well but were unable to turn possession into scores and conceded a few scores just before the break to leave the halftime score Leitrim Gaels 1-3  St Joseph’s 0-2. A slow start to the second half saw Leitrim Gaels extend their lead before St Joseph’s exploded back into the game with a flurry of well-taken scores which saw our lads go in front for the first time. It was breathless, end to end football for the remainder of the game and by the time the referee blew the final whistle, Leitrim Gaels were victors by the minimum margin on a final scoreline of Leitrim Gaels 4-5 St Josephs 1-13. We now await results of other games to see if we may have done enough to reach the semi-finals. Congratulations to both teams on producing a thrilling game of football for the spectators present.

St Joseph’s squad for both games was Fionnan Harte, Ben Harte, Cian Nolan, Padraig Maguire, Jack Mc Intyre, Eanna Mc Namara, Kevin Doherty, Kalum Mc Loughlin, Liam Mc Intyre, Harry Wilson, Darren Shortt, Matthew Mc Cabe, Kian Mc Hugh, Joey Mc Brien, Gary Mitchell, Tommy Kearney, Conor Downes, Gavin Gallogly, Conor Shortt.
