The All County Leagues open for 2008 this weekend as the Division 5 teams dust off the boots after the winter break. There are 6 games in the division and all games are at noon on Sunday. The under 16s league in the format of 15, 13 and 9 aside are also in action at the same time across the county.

The county scene is busy with 3 of our county teams playing away from home as the Ladies travel to Lemybrien in Waterford and the hurlers head for Temp to play Fermanagh.  The Minors start the county games off with a game in Enniscrone on Saturday at 4:45pm.

The county footballers have home advantage as the refixed round 1 game is scheduled for 2:30pm in Páirc Sean. This is a game in hand for Leitrim and is our first home game. It is the only Allianz National League football game in the country on Sunday. A win for Leitrim would leave 6 teams on two points and it all to play for in the remainder of the league. Down are in second place on 4 points and table toppers are Wexford with a maximum of 6 points.

Please support all our County teams in their respective competitions !

At the outset, CCC Liatroma wishes to return its gratitude to all of the clubs which gave feedback on the questions posed and, by and large, the Master Fixture Plan 2008 reflects, particularly with regard to the championship starting dates, the overall consensus that could be gleaned from the exercise, which proved most worthwhile. Overall, there is no desire to play any ACL games without County Senior Panelists. There were submissions returned by 10 clubs.

You are asked to note the following:

– This is Year 1 of a 2 year cycle and a new draw was completed in all divisions.

– With regard to the Master Fixture Plan, it is the intention of CCC Liatroma that this plan will be adhered as closely as possible; not withstanding there may be prove to be exceptional circumstances which may necessitate minimal changes as the year unfolds.

– All of the activities that are planned for individual weekends have yet to be fully streamlined; the combinations of clubs teams at various levels may require some adjustment of fixtures/rounds at a later stage as each weekends fixtures are put together.

– With regard to the Shield Competitions, the Draws will be completed at the next meeting of CCC Liatroma.

At the county board meeting of Coiste Chontae Liatroma of 11 Feabhra, a discussion around the timeframe of club fixtures for the 2008 season took place and the difficulties that face CCC Liatroma in the planning of the year ahead were pointed out, particularly with regard to the vast array of county fixtures that are due to be played at the various levels and codes, and the particular dates that apply to these fixtures and the gaps that are planned between particular games at these levels and codes.

It was pointed out and accepted by the delegates that the discussion was mainly to aScórtain views and it was not in any degree intended that decisions would be taken with regard to starting dates for competitions etc at the meeting, as this is the function of the CCC. No confirmed starting dates were made available to the meeting.

Further to this discussion the CCC are requesting at this stage that clubs consult with their delegates who were present at the meeting and, in consultation with the other interested parties in your club, CCC Liatroma would welcome your views regarding the following:

– What are your clubs views regarding approximate dates for the commencement Club Championships 2008, considering that recently and traditionally the Club Championship has not commenced until Liatroim has completed Senior Inter County activity?

– Given that, as pointed out at the meeting, this may prove to be a more difficult year to plan Club Fixtures, what would be your clubs position with regard to the suggestion of playing a number of league fixtures without county senior players?

It must be pointed out that this is a consultative process which should be viewed in the context of the points that were made at last Mondays meeting and CCC Liatroma will welcome your views on the matters as discussed on the night and mentioned here in advance of a Club Fixture Plan being committed to.

CCC Liatroma recognises the fact that club delegates could not commit to concrete views at the meeting, but points made were valued and the very fact that a consultative process was engaged in was appreciated.

Ultimately your clubs views are now invited for consideration in the planning of the 2008 Club Fixture Calendar, and in this regard submissions should be made no later than 6pm ar an Luan 18 Feabhra 2008.

It is important, in the overall context, that your club responds to this request.

A Master Fixture Plan outlining Inter County activity 2008 is available to download and very quickly shows a congested fixture schedule that leaves little room for maneuver for Club competitions. Please take the time and make the effort to have a look at the schedule as this affords every Club member a chance to have a say in the format for the year.

The County Champions St Marys won the All County League Division 1 final in fine style as they racked up an impressive 3-13 to Melvin Gaels 2-09 to make take the double title for 2007. The game was played in near perfect conditions in Páirc Sean with only a slight cross field breeze to contend with.

Melvin Gaels, playing towards the N4 end, opened the Scóring within the 1st minute with an Emelyn Mulligan free within the 1st minute. Ray Mulvey opened St. Marys account 90 seconds later with a shot from play. He followed this up with another point from play and this was quickly followed by a Clement Cuniffe shot onÓgoal which was saved by Liam Gilmartin. Paul McGauran left the scores 0-2 each after 5 minutes. Emelyn Mulligan dropped a shot short into James McGowan but with his next play he registered a point from a free from 32m out. Gene Bohan brought the sides level again with a point from a free. Brian ODonnell followed up immediately with a point from play off the kickout and Liam McTiernan continued the Scóring for St. Marys and registered his first point of the half. Mulligan was called on again to bring the score difference to 1 point as he slotted over from another free.

In the 18th minute Brian ODonnell scored a point from play and 1 minute later Ian McGreevey scored a rasper of a goal after a defensive overlap on the Gaels to leave the score 1-06 to 0-4. St. Marys were dominating in many areas including the crucial midfield sector but 2 subsequent drives ended in wides over the next 3 minutes. This was St. Marys last score of the half but the Gaels werent finished. In the 24th and 30th minutes Emelyn Mulligan was called on again to register 2 points from frees and this left the teams with 1 goal separating them at the interval. Half time score St Marys 1-06 Melvin Gaels 0-06

Melvin Gaels started the second half as they did the first with Emelyn Mulligan pointing another free. In the 3rd minute directly in front of the goals Mulligan, from a free, had a gilt edged chance to bring the sides to within 1 point but he miss kicked and dropped the shot which was cleared by the St. Marys defense. This woke St. Marys up and they played open football which lead to their second goal in the 7th minute and a second for Ian McGreevey. This goal came from a series of hand passes from the 45 in towards the N4 goals with the final pass from Jimmy Guckian to McGreevey just outside the box who had no difficulty with a low cross shot into the back of the net.

St. Marys never looked back after this as the clocked up another 4 unanswered points from Michael Greene, 2 from Ray Mulvey and the 4th from Jimmy Guckian. Conor SheridanÓgot 1 point back in the 17th minute for the Gaels and some minutes later Stephen McGauran found the net after a series of passes from Gearoid Foley and Emelyn Mulligan.

Clement Cuniffe pointed from play for St. Marys and following the next kickout he had a point blank shot saved by Liam Ferguson. With the scores at 2-11 to 1-08 the next move from Ray Mulvey put the game out of reach for Melvin Gaels as Mulvey side stepped a defender to face the keeper one to one and he lobbed the ball into the back of the net. Gene Bohan added a point from a free and Stephen McGauran added one for the Gaels. Gene Bohan brought St. Marys tally to 3-13 with another point from play. With 3 minutes of injury time played Melvin Gaels reduced the final score difference with a fine goal from Stephen McGauran.

Ulster 1-15 Connacht 2-09

Monaghan duo Paul Finlay and Thomas Freeman scored 1-08 between them as Ulster swept through to next weeks M Donnelly Interprovincial football final with a 1-15 to 2-09 victory over Connacht tonight in Ballybofey.

Two goals in the space of a minute-and-a-half for Connacht really set the visitors up nicely for this contest with the westerners holding a 2-02 to 0-02 lead after seven minutes.

Half-forward Andy Moran and full-forward Declan Maxwell were the goal getters with Mayos Moran slotting to the net following a well-weighted pass from Sean Armstrong, who was a late introduction for the absent Michael Meehan.

Maxwell continued Morans good early work by finding the net soon after, while Ulster kept in touch with points from Finlay and Cavans Ger Pierson.

With six points separating the sides, Connacht held a deserved lead but Ulster were quick to cut the gap thanks to fine individual scores from Freeman, who collected his first All-Star award last night, and Finlay. Indeed Ulster could have cut the deficit further but for some inaccuracy in front of the posts.

Points from Armstrong and Roscommons Karol Mannion restored Connachts two-goal advantage but Ulster were pressing hard and scores from DanÓgordon and Enda Muldoon cut the gap to four points, twelve minutes before the interval.

As the game ebbed and flowed, it was Connachts turn to exert control and Armstrong had an excellent goal chance snuffed out in the 27th-minute when Ulster goalkeeper James Reilly pulled off a superb save.

Both teams traded points before the interval but at half-time it was still John O Mahonys Connacht men who were in the ascendancy – they held a 2-05 to 0-08 advantage.

While the opening half lacked intensity, the second half promised much with Ulster firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. The home side stole the lead six and a half minutes into the half with a Finlay point and then a goal from the Monaghan half-forward after great assistance from Freeman, who pinged through a lovely long ball.

Although substitute Ger HenÓghan took the next Connacht score, this was a mere blip in a dominant Ulster patch which saw fine scores from Gordon, Kevin Cassidy, who fisted over, Armaghs Aaron Kernan and Freeman and Ulster held a 1-13 to 2-07 lead as the game entered the final quarter.

Connacht remained resilient but it was Ulster who looked the more potent. The visitors broke through for a goal chance with six minutes remaining following good work by Keith Higgins and HenÓghan but the Roscommon man could only watch on as Derrys All-Star full-back Kevin McCloy made a superb block.

At the opposite end, Ulster, last winners in 2004, continued to tag on the points to firmly seal a spot in next Saturdays Croke Park decider against Munster.

ULSTER: J Reilly; B Owens, K McCloy, K Lacey; A Kernan, C Gormley, K Cassidy; E Lennon, D Gordon; D Clerkin, S CavanÓgh, P Finlay; T Freeman, G Pierson, E Muldoon.

Subs used: C McFadden for Pierson (49 mins), C Toye for Clerkin (64).

CONNACHT: P Greene; C Harrison, F Hanley, J McKeon; D Meehan, D Blake, K Higgins; R McGarrity, B Cullinane; M Breheny, S Armstrong, A Moran; C Cregg, D Maxwell, K Mannion.

Subs used: G HenÓghan for Cregg (33 mins), F Dolan for Maxwell (45), M Finneran for Cullinane (54).

Referee: Pat Fox (Westmeath)

Its time to take a look at the League Tables and see how things have progressed over the weeks since our last roundup on Podcast 6 with Declan Bohan. The first of the League finals is this Sunday and its in Division 3 between Drumkeerin and Dromahaire.

Division 1

Melvin Gaels currently hold the top place followed closely by County Senior Champions St. Marys and last years Intermediate Champions Carrigallen. Both the Gaels and Carrigallen are playing their last game this weekend against middle of the table placings Mohill and Bornacoola respectively. St. Marys are facing Glencar Manorhamilton in their penultimate game. All results will be pivotal in deciding the placings as they head into the final straight but with St. Marys having an extra game they must hold the strongest hand. Bornacoola and Glencar Manor can end on equal points for second positions but the score difference will probably rule them out. If St. Marys can get themselves together after last weekends disappointing Connacht performance then they are favourites to make it to the final and the chance to make it a double title.

Division 2

Current table toppers Sean O Heslins are finished their games and now await the proceedings of this weekend as the sole fixture is between Annaduff and Aughnasheelin who currently lie third. If Aughnasheelin lose or draw then the final parings are decided as second place Gortletteragh are guaranteed to be in the mix with Sean O Heslins. A win for Aughnasheelin will mean that Gortletteragh must play their outstanding game to decide the final pairings.

Division 3

This is a fait accompli as the final is this weekend Drumkeerin meet Dromahaire on Sunday at 2pm in Pairc Sean. Both teams have performed admirably in the League and have only lost 3 games between them. Drunkeerin however top the table and their 91 points score difference show that their forwards and defence are well tuned. Dromahaire have it all to do in this local derby on Sunday.

Division 4

This division wont be going to final stages anythime soon as there are 16 games unplayed with 2 of them scheduled for this weekend. Each of the games could prove crucial as there are 2 teams at the top, Carrigalen and Annaduff, with 3 to 4 others in hot pursuit. score difference may prove to be a big decider over the next few weeks. This Sunday Kiltubrid play Cloone and Annauff play Ballinaglera and this may make the picture clearer.

Division 5

Teams in division 5 cannot complain about not getting enough games as the competition is based around a total of 91 league games and thankfully 80 have been played to date. Dromahaire are the clear table leaders with all their games played and they are 5 points clear of St. Caillins and St. Marys who lie on 20 points each. St. Caillins have 1 game to play and this is scheduled for this weekend against Gortletteragh on Sunday at 1pm. This will determine of they need to force St. Marys to win their remaining 2 games as St. Marys penultimate fixture is also fixed for Sunday against Glencar Manorhamilton.
