GAEIL NUA EABHRAC- The Irish New Yorkers.

Do you know a family that has recently immigrated to New York?

Real Films are making a documentary series on the Irish people in New York. We are looking for an Irish family who has recently emigrated, or are in the process of emigrating who would be interested in sharing their story with us; to allow us film them three or four times over a month or so to see how they are settling in and starting life in New York. How is it finding a new home, new work, new schools and a new life? We are all familiar with the older stories of immigration but what is it like in 2011?

This is not a reality television series it is a two part factual documentary. For 250 years Irish people have immigrated to New York and in most cases very successfully made it their own. We want to tell the story of Irish people who are taking this journey in 2011. As well as our family of newly arrived Irish, we will also tell the stories of first, second and third generation Irish and Irish Americans living in New York.

This year we celebrate 25 years of the Leitrim Supporters Club and over the 25 years the Leitrim supporters have proved themselves to be the most loyal, committed and generous of any supporters in the country:-

Eamon Duignan, Chairman of the Dublin Branch of the Leitrim Supporters Club tells us "In the very first supporters club draw in 1986 we had 2,000 members and we raised €100,000. Tickets were £100 pound each with monthly prizes of cars for 12 monthly draws. Last year we had 2,200 members in our club. This year we are hoping to get 2,500 who will all wear the special 25th anniversary Scórf"  Eamon also goes on to reveal the true extent of our supporters generosity over the last 10 years:-

*  Total contributed by supporters over the last 10 years € 2,000,000

*  € 120,000 on average per year over the last ten years

*  Supporters donated € 900,000 towards new stand in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada

Coiste Chontae Liatroma extend best wishes to St Brigids from Roscommon who contest the All Ireland Senior Club Football Final in Croke Park on St Patricks Day. 

In Connacht, St Brigids accounted for Eastern Harps (Sligo) in the preliminary round and our ownÓglencar Manorhamilton in a thrilling semi final played in Pairc Sean.  In the Connacht Final they defeated Killererin (Galway) after extra time in another thrilling game.  They defied all the odds to reach the All Ireland Final when they defeated a much fancied Nemo Rangers (Cork) two weeks ago and now face Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) in the St Patricks Day decider.

Leitrim Intercultural Forum Information Fair

Message

I am writing to invite you, or a member of your organisation, to take
part at the Leitrim Intercultural Forum Information Fair taking place
at the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on Shannon on Wednesday 23 March 2011
between 4pm and 7pm.

 

Leitrim Intercultural Forum is a new group being established to
provide training, information, advocacy, support, activities and
address issues affecting Leitrim’s newest communities from around the
world.

 

We are also starting Leitrim Intercultural Women, a group to provide
support, social activities, family information and practical guidance
for women settling into new communities.

 

Our programme so far has included a number of information sessions
around the county and family art weekend to create a carnival piece
for the Carrick-on-Shannon St Patrick’s Day parade.  Future activities
planned include a cross border trip for women to Fermanagh and the
production of an information pack for new communities.  There will
also be further meetings and training events in both Manorhamilton and
Carrick-on-Shannon to set up and support the county-wide Intercultural
Forum and Intercultural Women’s group.

 

The Information Fair will include various service providers in a trade
fair style setting, which will enable local people, particularly those
from new communities, to access information, raise concerns and find
out more about the services available to them in County Leitrim.

 

I have attached a booking form should you wish to host a stand at the
event.  We would appreciate it if you could return this to us no later
than Wednesday 16 March to allow us to confirm arrangements with the
venue.

Unsung Players- Connacht Players feature prominently!

The Irish Independent recently published Unsung Heroes Football and Hurling teams, selected from a long list of nominations of top players from 1960 to 2010 who had never won All Ireland Senior Championship medals.

Connacht had five players selected on the Football team – Johnny Hughes of Galway at left half back; Dermot Earley of Roscommon at midfield, with the half forward line being comprised Ciaran McDonald of Mayo, Packie McGarty of Leitrim and Mickey Kearins of Sligo.
On the Hurling side the province had two Galway men chosen – Ollie Canning at left corner back and Joe Salmon at centre-field.
As well as being famed inter-county stars, all seven players also made their mark over the decades as members of the Connacht Railway Cup teams.
