Leitrim 3 5
Sligo 2 8

A goal by sub James McGreal just before the end gave Leitrim a share of the spoils in an exciting derby showdown with neighbours, Sligo in Ballinamore on Sunday.

A very heavy snow shower after 7 minutes in the second forced a cessation in play for a 6 minute spell when both teams were sent to their dugouts by Referee Alan Kelly.

Leitrim were very impressive in the opening quarter and grabbed a seven point’s lead, thanks largely to goals from Sean Walsh and Michael Burns.

But the Yeats County were back in contention by the interval and only trailed by the minimum after Niall Cadden and Colm Crowley found the Leitrim net in turn.

Mark Burke put over three Sligo frees from 60 yards and Liam Reidy converted a 25 metre free, to level matters by the 72 minute.

After that Burke found the range from further Sligo frees, to put his side three points in front as the final whistle approached.

The goal by sub James McGreal in extra time gave Leitrim a share of the spoils goal in extra time by Leitrim divided the spoils.

Unbelieveable as it may seem the U21 game was called off within 1 hour of throw-in. This is the 3rd time a Leitrim teams fixture has called at an away venue, twice inÓgalway and once in Ruislip. In fact it could be argued that it is the 4th time considering this weekends fixture change for the Seniors against London.

It is believed that heavy rainfall since 10:30am this morning is the cause of the postponement.

Refixture announced for next Saturday (24th March) at 3:30pm in Ballinasloe.

The county minor game between Leitrim and Sligo is switched from Drumshanbo to Cloone. The throw-in remains at 5pm tomorrow evening (Saturday).

16-Mar-07 by Brendan Doyle – PRO

The game has a 2.00pm throw in and will be eagerly anticipated by both teams who are safely thrugh to the quarter finals of Division 2. Despite a defeat in their opening game against Sligo, Dublin have bounced back with wins against Limerick and Clare. A win for either team would theoretically set up an easier quarter final draw but will have to await the final day results to know who their opponents will be. All that is certain at this time is that a defeat for Leitrim will see them finish fourth in Section 2A and face undefeated Tipperary have finished top of Section 2B. With the Leitrim mens game on Sunday in Newbridge now deferred we invite all Leitrim supporters in Dublin to support the ladies team in St Brigids.

The GAA have confirmed that an appeal by the London County Committee against the re-fixing of their Division 2a Allianz football league game against Leitrim at a neutral venue on Sunday next has been successful.

This means that Sunday’s game, scheduled for Newbridge, has now been postponed. A date for the re-fixture has yet to be agreed.

Following a request by Aughawillan Club to the County Board committee on Monday night there will be a change to the make up of Divisons 3 and 4.

Aughawillan have been placed in Division 3 for the last number of years but they felt that Division 4 would be better suited to that team. They put a proposal forward to allow their team to be regraded into Division 4. This proposal was presented to Club delegates at last Mondays County board meeting. Their proposal was carried and the current structure of Division 3 (10 teams) and Divison 4 (12 Teams) will change to a new 9 Team Divison 3 and a 13 team Divison 4.

This change will necessitate the abandonment of the current fixtures for Divisons 3 & 4 and the redrawing of new fixtures. It is expected that a new plan of fixtures for both Divisions will be announced this coming weekend. It is also expected that Divison 4 will commence on weekend of 24/25 Marta while the Division 3 start date will commence as previously expected on the following weekend – 31 Marta/01 Aibrean.

Longford 1-14

Leitrim 0-10

Longford collected another two points in their bid to reach the knock-out stages of Division 2 when they came from behind to beat neighbours Leitrim at Pearse Park.

A second-half fisted goal from Brian KavanÓgh proved the turning point, leaving Longford in a 1-10 to 0-8 lead, and four more points followed – three from Paul Barden – as they ran out convincing winners.

Leitrim began the better side, racing into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead after 19 minutes – the points coming from Michael Foley (2), Ciaran Duignan (2), Michael Duignan and James Glancy.

Longford gradually got their act together and by half-time had narrowed the gap to just two points (0-7 to 0-5) following scores from KavanÓgh, Paul Barden and Padraic Davis.

The home side eventually got on top and were much the better team after the break as they outscored Leitrim 1-9 to 0-3.

The two Leitrim Senior Scór semi finals were held at the weekend in Bornacoola on Friday and on Saturday in Drumreilly. Bornacoola was packed on Friday night and there was a great line-up in all events. The Saturday night was a bit slacker in Drumreilly when a number of clubs had to bow out for one reason or another.

Overall, 13 clubs took part which is an increase of two on last year. Kiltubrid, St Osnatts and Melvin Gaels were back taking part this year.

After defeats in their opening two games, the pressure on Leitrim to deliver a win was well answered with a powerful second half performance, a trademark of many of last seasons games. Leitrim did not have it all their own way in the first half as they played into driving wind and rain and were two points in arrears after ten minutes following points from Dymphna O Brien. Sarah McLoughlin reduced the arrears as Leitrim were reduced to fourteen players for ten minutes following a Charlene Tyrrells sin bin offence. Leitrim battled bravely against the elements and an Ann Marie Cox free levelled matters during this period. However Limerick rallied and scored three unanswered points in the remainder of the half as Leitrim missed a number of chances to cut the deficit including a disallowed goal.

Within eight minutes of the restart Leitrim were level with three well worked points. Mid way through the half a Cox goal put Leitrim in front for the first time and they closed out the game with incredible committment and resolute defending all over the field to record a 1-8 to 0-6 win. This vistory relegated Limerick to Division 3 for next season and ensures Leitrim remain in Division 2 in addition to qualifying for the knock out stages of the League. Next Sunday Leitrim face a resurgent Dublin team who defeated Clare by eight points on Sunday.
