The annual Leitrim GAA Supporters draw took place in Cox??s Steak House, Dromod last night 2nd April 2005. A packed house witnessed the drawing of the fifteen winning tickets under the supervision of Garda Joe Egan.

This draw was again a huge success as you the supporters dug deep to support Leitrim GAA. The hard working committee were justifiably proud of their efforts as the draw went according to plan and once again exceeded the taking of the previous year??s draw.

County board Chairman Gerry McGovern addressed the gathering following the draw and was very high in his praise of all who made the draw the big success in reaching the ??70,000 euro target. All the prizes were sponsored by many of Leitrim??s valued supporters who once again were only too delighted to come forward without hesitation to give the ticket holders 15 good prizes.

Thanking the Cox family for their continued support the chairman paid tribute to Eugene and T.P. Cox who put their premises both upstairs and downstairs at the disposal of the committee and supporters last night.

Supporters Club Secretary Marie Lee was mentioned by the chairman for all her outstanding work as Secretary leading by example with a big personal ticket sales tally.

The Dublin based supporters committee of whom many travelled down for the draw came in for well deserved praise for their huge amount of work with the draw this year and in the years past.

Leitrims Promotion hopes Ended

Leitrim 0-8
Monaghan 2-18

Leitrims promotion hopes came to an abrupt end in Pairc Sean as Monaghan proved much the better team in a one-sided league encounter that was effectively over when Mark Daly netted for Monaghan just four minutes after the break.

The performance, more so than the result, was a huge disappointment for the largest home league attendance in some years at the Carrick-on-Shannon venue. The pre match withdrawal of the injured John Mc Keon allied to that of Dermot Reynolds certainly didn t help the Leitrim cause and when Declan Maxwell was yellow carded in the first half, it was another serious blow.

However, after the promise shown in the victory over Clare and the draw with Longford, hopes were high that Leitrim could set up a final day promotion showdown with Roscommon by beating the Ulstermen, but Monaghans intent was evident early on as they raced into a five point lead – 0-6 to 0-1 – in the opening stages with Rory Woods, Tom Freeman and Paul Finlay causing particular problems for a makeshift Leitrim rearguard.

Leitrim did come more into the game as the interval neared, enjoying a large amount of possession but four first half points through Michael Foley, Barry Prior, Colin Regan and sub Donal Brennan was poor reward for their efforts and Des Dolan will no doubt be hugely concerned by the number of chances wasted.

With Monaghan leading by 0-10 to 0-4 at the break, Leitrim needed a good start to the second half, but it was the Farney men who picked up where they left off with Paul Finlay kicking the opening two points of the period. When Mark Daly followed up with a well takenÓgoal, the game as a contest was effectively over. Tomas Freeman added another to rub salt in the Leitrim wounds and although Leitrim kept fighting until the death, Monaghan were more than worthy winners on the day.

In the closing fifteen minutes Leitrim came close to narrowing the gap as both Donal Brennan and Christopher Carroll hit the Monaghan crossbar, but on a day when very little went right for the home side, Leitrim supporters were left to dwell on a comprehensive defeat ahead of the big local derby with Roscommon on Sunday next.

Leitrim: Cathal Mc Crann, Michael Mc Guinness, Shane Foley, Barry Butler, Niall Gilbane, Barry Mc Weeney, Dermot Kennedy, Christopher Carroll, Gary Mc Closkey, Johnny Goldrick (0-1), Barry Prior (0-1), Michael Foley (0-1), Colin Regan (0-1), Declan Maxwell, James Glancy . Subs used: Donal Brennan (0-4), Michael Duignan, David Mc Hugh,

Leitrim 0-08 Sligo 0-07

Leitrim beat a much fancied Sligo side without Adrian Fowley and Paul Ellis, Sligo had beat Leitrim in the O Donaghue shield by 15 points and were expecting another good result here.

Leitrims 6 backs played exceptionally well especially Dermot Reynolds and Gary Reynolds who played in the unusual role of centre back, Paul Early and Stephen Connaty dominated centre field and our forwards were superb with a star performance from Ray Mulvey aided by Cathal Egan , David O Connor, James McWeeney and Sub. Ronan Kennedy.

Sligo started off with the first 2 points of the game, thenÓgavin Kelly open our score with a point from play and Ray Mulvey followed with 3 more from play. Sligo hit another point leaving Leitrim ahead by one point at the half time mark. on resumption Sligo started with a point to equalise . A fantastic 50 m free from James Mc Weeney saw Leitrim ahead, then Sligo got 2 more points before a further 2 points from Ronan Kennedy 1 from play and 1 free. That saw Leitrim off to a victory by 1 point.

Sub: Ronan Kennedy for Connor Kelly, Gavin Samon for Cathal Egan.

Note:
A Big thanks to the Carrigallen Club for the use of the pitch on Saturday and for the superb condition of the pitch and the way everyone was looked after.

Also thank you to the clubs who have given their pitches for Minor Training in the past number of weeks and who continue to do so, it is much appreciated.

20 March 2005 ? Division 2a: Allianz NFL Round 5

Leitrim 0-11 Longford 0-11

Leitrim Get Back on Track

A large attendance at this Pearse Park derby saw Leitrim put a poor first half performance behind them to secure a hard earned point and retain an outside chance of promotion. The result however confirmed the growing suspicion that the two dropped points in Carlow may well prove the team?s undoing as the race for promotion enters the closing stages.

There was of course a genuine fear that the defeat to a previously win-less Carlow marked the bursting of the early season Leitrim bubble and this gave Sunday?s game against the unbeaten league leaders an added significance. In this context, a good performance was essential ? win, lose or draw ? and Leitrim achieved both the draw and the feat of restoring supporters? belief in the Dolan revolution.

However, the early signs were not promising as the home team raced into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 20 minutes with the Leitrim defence again displaying signs of hesitancy as Padraig Davis and the Longford forward line threatened to rip Leitrim apart. Neil Sheridan had shot Longford into the lead straight from the throw in and while Johnny Goldrick replied for Leitrim, the home team were dominant in almost all sectors. Indeed they created at least three good goalScóring chances, but failed to convert any of them and allowed Leitrim to stay in touch with points from James Glancy, Shane Foley, Michael Foley and Declan Maxwell

By half time the lead stood at just three points ? 0-8 to 0-5 ? and Leitrim put in a terrific second half performance that should have secured both points. With the defence tightening considerably and Chris Carroll gaining a foothold in midfield, the Leitrim scores finally began to arrive. Points from Michael Foley (2), Johnny Goldrick and Chris Carroll to a solitary reply from Padraig Davis left the teams deadlocked at 0-9 apiece and just 10 minutes remaining.

It was a remarkable comeback from Leitrim and one that highlights just how far the team have come in the last couple of months. Indeed twice in the closing stages Longford made a sprint for the line edging in front through Padraig Davis, but Leitrim?s belief held and on both occasions the Connacht men struck back to level.

On the first occasion, with Longford leading by 0-10 to 0-9, Christy Carroll fielded magnificently to set up James Glancy for the levelling score. Longford again took the lead through Davis, but super sub Michael Duignan arrived at the end of a move started by Shane Foley and kicked a memorable equaliser in the last minute to earn a share of the spoils.

Leitrim: Cathal Mc Crann, Michael Mc Guinness, John Mc Keon, Dermot Reynolds, Niall Gilbane, Barry Mc Weeney, Shane Foley (0-1), Christopher Carroll (0-1), Gary Mc Closkey, Johnny Goldrick (0-2), Barry Prior, Michael Foley (0-3), Colin Regan, Declan Maxwell, James Glancy (0-2). Subs used: Donal Brennan for Declan Maxwell, Michael Duignan (0-1) for Donal Brennan, David Mc Hugh for Dermot Reynolds
