Garden County Prevails after Strange Allianz League Encounter

Thirty minutes into this Round 2 Allianz League Division 4 match in Aughrim, Leitrim were coasting after totally dominating play and Scóring at will, having built up a very healthy 0-9 to 0-0 scoreline. The Leitrim defence was cutting out any threat posed and, with flowing moves and great economy in front of the posts, the team was exercising the scoreboard operator with regularity. However, once Wicklow got off the mark as the game moved toward the interval they quickly added three further points and suddenly it was game on. As it transpired the second half momentum remained with the home side and they continued from where they left off, replicating Leitrim’s first half showing, but ultimately bettering it, by Scóring eleven unanswered points to establish the match winning lead.
In foggy, but nonetheless, very playable conditions, play swung either end at the commencement of this match before a 45 converted by Kevin Conlan opened Scóring after 7 minutes. This set the tone for a series of Leitrim points which flowed with regularity into the Clubhouse end of the grounds as Conlan doubled the advantage with a free and midfielder James McGrail’s long delivery deceived the Wicklow keeper Robert Lambert and hopped over the bar. Micheal McWeeney forayed forward to finish a fine move from the right wing and this was followed up with a Donal Wrynn pointed effort to leave Leitrim five points to the good entering the second quarter. The scores kept coming for Leitrim from Fergal Clancy, play, in between two Conlan frees as Wicklow followers must have been wondering were they ever going to raise a white flag. Little did those present realise what would ultimately unfold when Kevin Conlan pointed another free to leave Leitrim nine points clear and the homesters pointless. Wicklow eventually got off the mark with a Seanie Furlong free and this was quickly added to with further scores from Conor McGregor (free) and two points from play by Mark Kenny and John McGrath, to leave just five in at the break and it was game on.
A period of sustained Wicklow pressure in the early stages of the second half was thwarted by a determined Leitrim defence but the tide had turned in this remarkable encounter. A Conor McGraynor free eventually broke the deadlock and what unfolded was so similar in nature to the first period. Wicklow took over and the points flowed as Leitrim struggled to gain a foothold. John McGrath with a converted free and Dean Odlum from play reduced the deficit to two. Win forward Darren Hayden left the minimum between the sides before Donal Wrynn brought a full length diving save from Lambert in the Wicklow goals as Leitrim tried to stop the rot. Two pointed frees from the boot of John McGrath gave the home side the lead and while Leitrim recorded two wides around this period the advantage had swung in favour of the men in blue. Furlong, from play, pointed what ultimately proved to be the winner with Wicklow’s eleventh unanswered point. Kevin Conlan with a free reduced the margin to the minimum with time running out and while both sides had chances in what remained, it was Wicklow who took the two points at the full time whistle.
Overall, a disappointing day for the Leitrim Players and Management but nonetheless, a lesson on the learning curve for a young team building for the future heading into the Allianz League break as we look forward to the visit of Antrim to Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada in three weeks time.

Friday 13th February St. Clares Post Primary school Manorhamilton, @ 7pm Hurling development programme A new fundamental & skill development programme for hurling has commenced in Ballinamore and Gortletteragh hurling clubs over the past few weeks. The fundamental programme is for children 6 to 8 yrs and the skills development programme for children 8t o 12 yrs. The programme will be delivered in Manorhamilton on Wednesday February 18th and in Carrick on Friday February 27th. Fundamental skills are the foundation for all sports and we are encouraging parents and former players to help out with the programme. Club FootballSports First Aid Training – Managing the Injured Player This course covers a comprehensive range of topics to prepare participants to administer First Aid care. Participants will learn practical skills so that they can deal competently with situations that may arise. The Sports First Aid course will help to improve the quality of first aid available in the sport and exercise environment. The Sports Injuries Course is aimed at coaches, mentors, teachers, supervisors, players, athletes and all volunteers involved in sport and exercise. Make sport safer for everyone and help to ensure that any injuries are dealt with appropriately when they first occur and until arrival of health care professional. Training can be provided in your club or central venue as demand requires. Course materials will be provided and a Certificate of attendance along with an Irish Heart Foundation Heartsaver AED certificate will be issued on completion of the training. GeneralIMPORTANT Child Welfare & Protection Training Information for ALL Clubs The Irish Sports Council has recently changed the structure of Child Welfare & Protection (Code of Ethics) workshops for Clubs. The details of the three stages of training are outlined here as follows: 1. Safeguarding 1 – Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course All Coaches, Childrens Officers and Designated Liaison Persons (DLP) must first complete the 3 hour Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course. This course educates participants on the implementation of best practice in protecting the welfare of children involved in sport. 2. Safeguarding 2 – Club Childrens Officer (C.C.O) A person appointed to the Club Childrens Officer position in a club must have completed safeguarding 1 (Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness workshop) and should complete the NEW Club Childrens Officer 3 hour workshop. This course will help the Club Childrens Officer to carry out the function of their role in the club and support the implementation of best practice in the club. Participants will also receive a Club Childrens Officer Action Planning document as part of the training. 3. Safeguarding 3 – Designated Liaison Person(DLP) A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person position in a club must have completed the Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course and should complete the NEW Designated Liaison Person 3 hour workshop. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles. The third part of the ISC Child Welfare & Protection Training Programme is the Designated Liaison Person workshop. This workshop is currently under review and will be available to clubs in the Spring /Summer of 2015. Club Childrens Officers Club Childrens Officers should be child centred in focus and have as the primary aim the establishment of a child centred ethos within the club. S/he is the link between the children and the adults in the club. S/he also takes responsibility for monitoring and reporting to the Club Management Committee on how club policy impacts on young people and Sports Leaders Designated Liaison Person Every club/organisation should designate a person to be responsible for dealing with any concerns about the protection of children. The Designated Liaison Person is responsible for reporting allegations or suspicions of child abuse to TULSA Child and Family Agency or Social Services (NI) and/or An Garda Siochán / PSNI. It is recommended that this person is a senior club person. However, if there is difficulty identifying a separate individual to take this role, the Club Childrens Officer can be appointed as Designated Liaison Person once the club/organisation is clear about the responsibilities of each role. The organisations child protection policy and procedures should include the name and contact details of the Designated Liaison Person and the responsibilities attached to the role. Ard na Speire 2015
GeneralThe 3rd annual Ard na Spéire 10km & 4km run/walk in memory of former Kiltubrid Ladies player Sandra Earley will take place on Sunday February 22nd 2015. Registration will be available from 12:30 at The Sheemore Inn Kilclare with the race kicking off at 2pm. Entry is €10 per person and €15 per family. Thanks to your support and generosity the race has raised over €25,000 for charity over the last two years. Funds raised this year will go towards the fight against Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Check out the Kiltubrid Ladies or Ard na Spéire Facebook pages for more details in the coming weeks and get those runners out in preparation for the event!

Scór na mBunscoileanna – Results night 2
ScórThe second night of Scór na mBunscoileanna took place in Leitrim Gaels clubrooms last thursday night 5th February. The standard of performances over the 2 nights competitions were a credit to the schools, parents and teachers, the children really promoted the culture and talent of the schools.
The best performance on each night in each event got medals and the Cormac MacGiolla shield for the best school overall was won by Gaelscoil Liatroma, Carrick on Shannon.
