Glencar/Manorhamilton GAA Club Notes 13/12/2017

Match for Mark – Please keep St Stephen’s Day free as we will join up with our friends in St Mary’s GAA Club Sligo for our Match For Mark in the memory of the late Mark Rooney who represented both clubs.  The theme this year is Linking the Ages.  At 1pm St Mary’s vs Glencar/Manorhamilton (Selection of players from 2007-2017 roughly!!!!).  This will then be followed by a short exhibition game where the St Mary’s and Glencar Manor U8, U10 and U12 teams will display their skills for all to see.  The finale will see all the “Golden Oldies” dust down their puma kings and battle it out for 30 mins.  Refreshments will be available in the clubhouse, with all live horse racing and Premiership matches on the TV!!!  There will be a bucket collection on the day with all monies raised going to charity.  Current and former players are asked to contact Dominic Kelly if they are available on the day. Last year’s game was a fantastic occasion and we hope to see you all again this year.

Lotto – Our last Lotto draw took place in Heraghty’s.  Numbers drawn were 12, 13, 17, 23.  There was no winner of the jackpot.  Five consolation prizes went to Declan McCloskey (Yearly Ticket), Kevin McManus Donaghmore, Diarmuid Keaney, C/O Killasnett Creamery, Pat Dolan, Newtownmanor and Padraig Keegan.  Many thanks to everybody for their continued support.  The jackpot now stands at €2,800.

Ordination – It was a very special day for the Kelly family and our parish last Sunday as Padraig Kelly was ordained a Deacon in Clare’s Church.  We extend our best wishes to Padraig and his family.

Minor Girls Connacht Final – Despite a very spirited performance our girls lost the Connacht Final to Corofin on a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-10 in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence on Sunday last. This scoreline didn’t reflect the closeness of the contest, full match report in this week’s Leitrim Observer.  Suffice to say we are so proud of this talented group of players who represented our club and county on the provincial stage with distinction. Congrats to Muireann Devaney who was the deserving recipient of the Player of the Match Award.

Sympathy – Our club extends deepest sympathy to the Bredin family following the death of Mary Bredin, Tullyskerney, Manorhamilton.  May She Rest in Peace.

Club Academy – Every Friday night our Club Academy for girls and boys takes place in St Clare’s Secondary School Gymnasium unless otherwise notified. U7’s from 6-7pm, U9’s from 7-8pm and U11’s from 8-9pm.  New players are welcomed every week.

National Club Draw Tickets – The club has an allocation of National Club Draw tickets.  20 Fantastic prizes on offer with first prize a car.  Tickets which cost only €10 are available from Phil Flynn or Collette Fox.  All prizes are provided by Croke Park and all monies raised from this draw are retained by the club so please support.

Dermot Molloy Hurling League Shield Final – Hard luck to the lads who lost the Shield Final to Carrick Hurling at the weekend.

Ordination – This Sunday will be a very special day for the Kelly family and our parish as Padraig Kelly will be ordained a Deacon at 2.30 in Clare’s Church.  Everyone is invited to the ceremony and for light refreshments afterwards in the Bee Park Community Centre.  Padraig has given a lifetime of dedication to our club and we hope as many as possible can join him and his family on Sunday for this very unique and special occasion.

Best Wishes – The club wishes to extend its best wishes to club player, Shona Sheridan, for a speedy recovery following her recent injury.  Shona, unfortunately, missed the U16 County Final last Saturday but we hope to see her back in the blue and yellow in the near future.

4 in a row for U16 Girls – Congratulations to our U16 girls’ team and management of Marie Keaney and Neil Faulkner who retained the U16 County Title after a comprehensive victory over St Francis on Saturday last on a score-line of 2-16 to 2-4.  In front of an excellent crowd, the Manor girls took to the Leitrim Village field in a determined fashion and led at halftime by 1-10 to 2-2.  Despite the score-line, the game was a tight contest and the girls were eventual winners on a score-line of 2-16 to 2-4 after a well-contested game where a great all round team performance won the day for the Manor side. Team captain Alva Sheridan lifted the Kalie Gill Memorial Cup for the “4 in a Row” on behalf of her teammates.

Minor Girls Connacht Final – All roads lead to St Croan’s, Ballintubber, Co Roscommon this Saturday, 9th December,  for the Minor Ladies Connacht Final. Corofin are the opposition having defeated Eastern Harps comprehensively in the other semi-final. In what promises to be an intriguing battle the ladies are well prepared by Neil Faulkner and Marie Keaney and are hoping to capture the Connacht title for the first time in the Club’s history. The game kicks off at 2pm and we ask everyone to Please Support the Ladies if at all possible.

Leitrim Young Sports Star – We extend congratulations to Muireann Devaney who was selected as the winner of the Young Sports Star Award at the recent Leitrim Sports Partnership Awards. Muireann’s prowess in Gaelic and Soccer are well recognised throughout the county and beyond and this award is a glowing testament to that. Muireann was also honoured as a member of the Leitrim U14 Ladies team who won the All Ireland B title in the Juvenile Team of the Year category and it was a further honour for the club that Mairead Clancy was also a member of that winning side. Minor Girls reach Connacht Final – Congratulations to our Minor management team of Neil Faulkner and Maire Keaney, and the panel of players who travelled to St Croan’s Park, Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon on Sunday last to take on Roscommon Champions Clann Na nGael. The Glencar-Manor girls started brightly with Dearbla Rooney finding the net from the throw-in. Throughout the first half, brilliant saves by Alva Sheridan in the Glencar Manor goals, a tenacious defence, hardworking midfield and speed combined with sharp shooting upfront, including a hat trick by Leah Fox and two from Dearbla Rooney, ensured the girls led by 5-7 to 1-6 at halftime.  Aided by the wind in the second half Clann na nGael emerged after halftime determined and launched a strong comeback to leave only 5 points between the teams 5 -9 to 3 -10. As the game tightened tensions rose on the field and Clann na nGael were reduced to 14 players as one of their girls received a Sin Bin.  With the benefit of an extra player, the Glencar Manor ladies dug deep and further scores from Eadaoin Clancy, Muireann Devaney (goal) and Orlaith Kelly secured a 6-11 to 3-10 win for the Leitrim champions. The team was Alva Sheridan,  Aisling Faulkner, Hannah Johnston, Tara McLaughlin, Laoise Clancy, Mary Broughton, Aoife Gallagher, Aoife Gilmartin, Eadaoin Clancy, Orlaith Kelly (Capt), Dearbhla Rooney, Chloe Rooney, Leah Fox, Muireann Devaney, Emma McLaughlin.  Subs used Aoife Feeney for T McLoughlin, Mairead Clancy for E. Senior County Final
Heartbreak for our seniors at the weekend. Everything was in place in the run-up to the big game. Excitement was at a high, the town was a sea of saffron and royal blue, well thought out signs raised the spirits, good luck messages were pouring in from near and far, an Eoghan McLoughlin RAP had us all buzzing and the team was ready for action. All looked good, we were ahead at halftime but there was a lot of football still to be played. However, in the final quarter, the momentum swung towards Mohill and we must salute them as deserving winners. A big word of thanks to all our players and everyone involved with the team especially Aidan Rooney and Sean Boylan, not just for Sunday but for all their contributions during the year. We enjoyed many a great day out – and we will again. The club would like to congratulate the Aughnasheelin Club on their Intermediate victory and we will look forward to clashing with them in next year’s Senior championship. Both games had plenty of excitement, twists and turns and were thoroughly enjoyed by the large contingent of spectators. A word of praise for referees Gareth Foley and Brendan Sammon whose performances added much to the occasion.

Junior B Championship Final
Although we were gutted for our Kerrigan Quarries sponsored Junior B team who lost their championship final last Saturday evening we were so proud of this bunch of players who gave it their all. What an absolutely brilliant performance from this group of fine young men who came out on top in their U13 County Final against a gallant St. Marys side on Saturday morning in Ballinamore.  It is great to see all the hard work being carried out at underage in the club reap rewards.  Dominic, Stuart and Kevin have invested a lot of their voluntary time coaching these players over a number of years and the club and parents really appreciate their commitment, dedication and expertise.  On Saturday the team played an attractive brand of football that was a joy to behold.  They were commanding throughout the game with an all-round team performance ensuring they were crowned the inaugural winners of this competition.  Gabriel Gilbride Jones was the proud captain who had the honour of lifting the cup on behalf of his teammates on this special occasion for our club.  Well done Gabriel.  Final Score 2-14 to 1-2.

They came out a different team in the second and with every man putting their shoulder to the wheel and upping their game they eventually booked their place in the semi-finals. Final Score Glencar Manor 0-14, Aughawillan 1-8. The support for the team was brilliant in our two quarter final games and the lads will need us all, more than ever on Saturday evening. Ladies Retain Division 2 League Title
Congratulations to our Division 2 Ladies Team who retained the League title on Sunday morning last after a captivating contest with Oughteragh Gaels. The sun shone in Kiltubrid as the Manor ladies took to the field against the Intermediate Champions hoping to retain the title captured by the Manor ladies first team a year earlier against the same opposition. Oughteragh Gaels dominated proceedings in the first half and the Manor girls were fortunate to reach half time on a scoreline of 2-2 to 0-8 – thanks to excellent saves from Natasha McEnroy between the posts. In the second half the ladies lifted their performance and the sharp shooting of Muireann Devaney, Leah Fox and Dearbhla Rooney who were starved of possession in the first half was aided by the quality of ball coming from the midfield pairing of Orlaith Kelly and Aoife Gilmartin and the defensive unit. Emma McLoughlin, Eadaoin Clancy and Captain Laoise Clancy worked tirelessly throughout the game providing excellent combination play and contributing scores when needed while in defence Laura McCann, Michelle McNulty, Hannah Johnston, Mary Broughton, Karen Connolly and Aoife Gallagher kept the Oughteragh Gaels forwards on their toes. Two subs were used during the game Aoife Gallagher for Gemma Tiffoney (20mins) and Rebecca Golden for Emma McLoughlin (55mins) and both players acquitted themselves well. Laoise Clancy accepted the cup on behalf of the team noting in particular the effort and dedication of Team Managers Shane Devaney and Padraig Kelly and congratulating Oughteragh Gaels on their Championship success the previous weekend. Well done Laoise.

Our Minor Ladies team continued their winning ways last week with two wins over St Phelims on a scoreline of 9-20 to 3-3 on Tuesday evening and St Brigids on a scoreline of 7-16 to 0-6 on Thursday. The girls gave two excellent team displays on both days especially given the number of girls also involved in the Senior Championship the previous Sunday. This Tuesday the girls travel to Carrick to take on St Mary’s/Annaduff and they will be hoping to maintain their 100% success rate. We wish the girls and management all the best.  Our U16 game versus Allen Gaels was postponed on Sunday morning last due to an unplayable pitch. The girls hope to get their 2017 campaign started this Sunday versus St Marys at home at 11am. Best of Luck to Maire, Neil and the girls and please support if you can.
