Clare 1-14 Leitrim 1-9

Clare secured their second successive victory in Division 2A following a 1-14 to 1-9 win over Leitrim in Ennis on Sunday.

The Banner men received a major boost during the week with Denis Russell returning to the squad, and he played a key role in the five-point win over the Ridge men – Scóring 0-5 in all (0-3 from frees).

Clare were given little trouble through the course of the game and with a strong wind at their backs established a 0-10 to 0-4 lead at half time.

However, Leitrim were not bereft of determination and managed to cut the margin to just two points with 15 minutes to go in the game.

But it proved to be insufficient to overturn the game and a goal from Gary Brennan soon afterwards thrust the home side ahead once more.

Leitrims goal came at the very end of the game through a controversial penalty after goalkeeper Joe Hayes was adjudged to have blocked a shot with his foot.

Leitrims Senior team play Sligo this Sunday in the FBD League in Markievicz Park at 2pm. Once again Leitrim will be without Senior Manager Dessie Dolan as Dessie is currently in Hospital recovering from a touch of pneumonia. We wish Dessie well in his recovery, he will no doubt be in touch with his management team on the line of John Russell, Gerry McLoughlin and Pat Prior. Leitrim still have a chance to progress in the competition but need a win to do so. Sligo have already come a cropper to Galway but registered a good win last weekend against GMIT.

The game will be featured on local radio and here on the website we will have the live scoreboard in operation during the event.

Apologies for delay in report, it disappeared in cyberspace for a short while !

Scór never fails to produce the goods and on a night of thrills at the Leitrim Scór na nÓg Finals in Manorhamilton on Sunday last, the high point of the night was when eight-year-old Aaron O?Donnell of Aughnasheelin was declared winner of the Recitation competition. Aaron brought the house down with his rendering of ?The Carnaross Farmer? and he must surely be the youngest ever winner of a county title in Leitrim Scór na nÓg.

There was wonderful entertainment in all competitions and the pity was that only one could proceed to Connacht on Saturday week next.

Rince Foirne

Carrigallen, Sean O?Heslins. Glencar/Manorhamilton and Drumreilly were the competing clubs and it would be risky to predict a winner. The adjudicators went for the very experienced group from Sean O?Heslins. This was their third year in a row to win this competition and two years ago they won in Connacht as well.

Amhrana?ocht Aonair

Four great solo singers: Aisling Sammon from Aughnasheelin, Rachel McLoughlin from Mohill, Aisling Maxwell from Se?n O?Heslins and Ursula McGuinness from Annaduff. The winner was Ballinamore?s, Aisling Maxwell. Aisling won the Leitrim title three years ago and did very well to win it again.

Ceol

There was some great music from the St Mary?s, Melvin Gaels, Dromahair and AughnasheelinÓgroups, but once again the Ward sisters, Niamh, Orla and Lisa took the title. It was their third year in a row also to win the title, but this year without their sister Yvonne who is now overage.

Aithriseoireacht

In the recitation section Aughnasheelin?s Aaron O?Donnell stole the show but there were also great performances from Bl?ith?n Donaghue from St Josephs (Carrigallen), Amy Costello from Mohill and Niamh O?Malley from Carrigallen. In other years any of them could have won the title.

Bail?ad Ghr?pa

Four good and varied ballad groups from Mohill, Eslin, Sean O?Heslins and St Mary?s. Last Year St Mary?s won and were unlucky not to get through in Connacht. They looked the best again and the adjudicators were in agreement and so they get another crack at the Connacht title.

Trath na gCeist.

This was a real cliff-hanger. There were five teams on stage: Bornacoola, Annaduff, Eslin, Aughawillan and Fenagh. There was a tie for first place between Fenagh and Bornacoola. When teams are tied, three questions are given to try and separate them No less than five rounds of tie-breakers had to be given in order to separate them with Fenagh winning it. Fenagh also won this competition last year.

Nuachleas

Last year Sean O?Heslins won the Leitrim Novelty Act title and went on to win in Connacht and the All Ireland. The difficulty with Novelty act is that you must come up with a new act each year. This year they were faced with good acts from Mohill, Drumreilly and Fenagh. O?Heslins were declared winners once again and with their record in Connacht they will have hopes of going further.

Rince Seit

For the last six years one of the joys of Leitrim Scór na nÓg was watching the progress of the Fenagh Set Dancers. They won six county titles in a row and for the last four years they won the Connacht title as well. The great disappointment was they never got the final one: the All Ireland. This year some of last years group were overage and so Fenagh had to start all over again. How remarkable and pleasing it was then to see the Fenagh club putting a group together and taking the title despite some strong performances from Se?n O?Heslins, Aughnasheelin, Aughavas and Ballinamore.

Club of the Year.

The Cormac Mac Giolla Shield for Club of the Year went to the Carrigallen club for putting in such a remarkable effort this year. It was a wonderful; night compered by an excellent Fear-a-T?, Karl McCartin. The medals were presented to the winning items by Cathaoirleach of Leitrim Co Board, Gerry McGovern. The Connacht Finals take place in Claremorris on Saturday week, 20 January, starting at 3.00pm.

Leitrim GAA will launch their Coach Education programme for 2007 on this Wednesday evening 17/01/2007, when Professor Niall Moyna from DCU will speak on ?Developing our youth ? what is best practise?. Dr. Niall Moyna is recognised as the foremost speaker on player development from childhood to adulthood and this is an opportunity for any individual with an interest in the development of young players to come along and hear from the best. Dr. Moyna will be joined on the night by Mr. Peter Horgan from Croke Park. The seminar will commence at 8 pm in the Bush Hotel, Ck-on-Shannon and we would ask all GAA clubs to ensure they are well represented on the night.

We would ask clubs to please confirm the number they will have attending with Thomas Keenan.

There were two big nights of Scór na nÓg in Leitrim, on Friday night last in Carrick on Shannon and on Saturday night in Ballinamore. The Saturday night was one of the most memorable in a long time. Proceedings started at 8.00pm and didn?t end until near 2.00am on Sunday morning.

While Friday night in St Mary?s Hall in Carrick on Shannon was light enough in some events as far as numbers, Saturday night in Ballinamore certainly made up for it. Ten solo singers, six in rince Foirne, eight instrumental music groups, nine Ballad Groups and five sets. This level of entry hasn?t been seen in a few years. Despite the long night there were no complaints as each one surpassed each other with the excellence of their performances.

The whole lot was a credit to the clubs who make such great efforts to put out teams in Scór. In all sixteen of the twenty-four clubs in the County participated but six of those who took part had second entries.

On Saturday night Leigh Murphy was Bean a T? and on Friday night Laura Crossan in Carrick. Both did an excellent job in controlling affairs on stage.

The qualifiers for the Co Finals are as follows:

Rince Foirne: Glencar Manorhamilton, Drumreilly, Carrigallen, Sean O?Heslins

Amhrana?ocht: Aughnasheelin, Annaduff, Mohill, Sean O?Heslins

Ceol: Aughnasheelin, Naomh Muire, Melvin Gaels, Dromahair

Recitation: Mohill, Aughnasheelin, St Josephs, Carrigallen

Trath na gCeist: Annaduff, Bornacoola, Eslin, Aughawillan, Fenagh

Ballad Group: Naomh Muire, Sean O?Heslins, Mohill, Eslin

Nuachleas: Se?n O?Heslins, Mohill, Drumreilly, Fenagh

Rince Seit: Aughnasheelin, Se?n O?Heslins, Aughavas, Ballinamore, Fenagh

The Co Finals are in Manorhamilton on Sunday 7 January, staring at 3.00pm
