Ballinamore SOH and Glencar/ Manorhamilton provided a very entertaining and exciting Minor Final in Pairc Sean last Sunday. The game began with great pace with both sides giving an indication of their intentions and within the first couple of minutes it was Glencar/Manors full forward Ronan Flynn who opened the Scóring with a well taken point. Shortly after Ballinamore SOH were awarded a free when Dean McGovern went past 3 defenders before being brought down by Killian McGriskin and the free was converted by Mark McGrory. Two minutes later Ballinamore SOH took the lead with a point from Jack Cullen.

Ballinamore SOH were playing into a strong wind but it did not seem to effect them in terms of winning possession and creating chances but after shooting three wides it looked like the elements were making it difficult for the forwards. Glencar/Manor hit back with a point from Niall Brady followed by a lovely point from Patrick Loughlin. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half Luke Murphy for Ballinamore SOH scored two points. Ronan Flynn and Niall Brady for Glencar/Manor started to have an influence in the match causing problems for the Ballinamore SOH defence. In the closing minutes of the first half Glencar Manor increased their lead with points from Alan Curran, two points from Niall Brady and a point from Ronan FlynnÓgiving them a four point lead. The half time score was Glencar/Manor 0-9 Ballinamore SOH 0-5.

The second half started with both teams working very hard and there was little to separate the sides during the opening exchanges. It took eight minutes before the first score was scored which was a goal scored by Mark McGrory for Ballinamore SOH leaving them just a point behind Glencar/Manor. Shortly after Ronan Flynn for Glencar/Manor pointed a free after a foul on Niall Brady which put Glencar Manor two points ahead. It took another nine minutes before Ballinamore SOH added to their score with a point from Dean McGovern after clever passing between Luke Murphy, Mark McGrory and Andrew Burns. With ten minutes to go Ballinamores goalkeeper Cian McCaffrey put in a great save from Alan Clancys shot for goal and the significance of the miss was evident when a minute later Ballinamore SOH got their second goal from a shot by Luke Murphy to give his side a two point lead.

Glencar/Manor never gave up and tried desperately hard to get back in to contention but it was Ballinamore SOH that got the next score with a point from Luke Murphy to leave three points between the sides. Glencar/Manor kept working to the very end trying to find a goal and in the second minute of injury time Ronal Flynn struck for goal but the ball was blocked by Brian Beirne to ensure his side won the Minor A Football Championhship 2011.

All roads lead to Pairc Séan this Sunday for County Final Day.

In the Minor decider its Glencar-Manor v Ballinamore-Séan O Heslins at 1-30pm and St Marys v Glencar-Manor in the Senior Game at 3-30pm. In the Minor A Championship there were 7 teams namely St Marys, Melvin Gaels, St Francis, St Manachans, Drumkeerin, Ballinamore-SOH and Glencar-Manor. Back on the 20th July when the Championship started it was the ambition of all 7 teams to reach the County Final but there can only be two finalists……Glencar-Manor topped the table on 10 points winning 5 out of the 6 games played and incidently the team they lost to was Ballinamore SOH so Im sure they will want to make ammends to that on Sunday. Ballinamore finished on 8 points together with Drumkeerin and St Manachans so it ended in a three way play-off to decide who would joinÓglencar-Manor in the final. The draw was done and on Wednesday 7th September in Kiltubrid Ballinamore and Drumkeerin were first to play with Ballinamore winning by a single point on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-08, this was a great turn around for Ballinamore as only the week previous in Round 7 Ballinamore were defeated by Drumkeerin on a score of 3-12 to 3-07. Next up a week later at the same venue was St Manachans who in Round 3 of the Championship were narrowly defeated by Ballinamore on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-09 and who Im sure hoped that this time they could turn the result around and earn themselves a place in the Final. Unfortunatly for St Manachans this was not to be even though the game was a tightly fought high Scóring contest Ballinamore won out, this time by 2 points on a score of 4-07 to St Manachans 3-08. No doubt these two games should be of great benefit to Ballinamore and with Glencar-Manor not having had a game since the 31st August Ballinamore must feel they have put in the match practice for Sundays final. On the other hand Im sure the Manor lads are hoping they can turn their earlier defeat by Ballinamore into a win and lift the coveted Trophy on Sunday afternoon. We wish both Teams, Ballinamore-SOH and Glencar-Manor the Best of Luck in the Final and also St Marys and Glencar-Manor in the Senior decider, we hope it is an enjoyable and memorable day for all.

The Minor Championship 11 a-side Final took place in Pairc Sean last Wednesday betweenÓgortletteragh and Leitrim Gaels and it was quite obvious from the first ten minutes that the Gortletteragh team were the much stronger of the two.

The game opened with a score for Leitrim Gaels with a lovely point from Michael McManus in the first 30 seconds but Gortletteragh hit back with a move that saw Alan McCann provide a pass to Padraig Gallagher who fired and got Gortletteraghs first goal. For the next ten minutes Gortletteragh were unstoppable with points from Barry Tiernan, Niall Woods, Patrick Heslin, Padraig Gallagher and Evan Ward.

To Leitrim Gaels credit they dug in and reduced a seven point lead to just two before half time with points from Dylan Ahern and Michael McManus and a good move between Aaron McLoughlin and Pierce Daly saw the ball passed swiftly to Michael McManus who scored a great low shot to the back of the Gortletteragh net. This left just two points between the teams but Gortletteragh hit back with a great goal from Alan McCann who had received a lovely pass from Padraig Gallagher. This left the half time score Gortletteragh 2-05  Leitrim Gaels 1-03.

The second half saw Gortletteragh starting very strong with two frees from Padraig Gallagher. McManus for Leitrim Gaels scored a point but was quickly followed by a point from Gortletteraghs Alan McCann. The killer score came eight minutes on when Padraig Gallagher after a long run scored their third goal giving Gortletteragh a nine point lead. McManus and Gallagher both got points for their sides and then Leitrim Gaels were awarded a penalty for a foul on Colm Moreton. Enda Moreton struck the ball well but Gortletteraghs keeper Niall Tiernan saved the shot. Gortletteragh got the ball back down and their fourth goal was scored by Evan Ward. Three more points were added by Gortletteragh, two from Gallagher and one from McCann to ensure their victory over Leitrim Gaels. Final score was Gortletteragh 4-12 Leitrim Gaels 1-05.

Congratulations to St Patrick’s Dromahair on their great victory over Aughnasheelin in a very wet Pairc Sean last Friday 2nd September. Dromahair were on the score board within 15 seconds of the start with a point from Martin Feeney and quickly added another point by Cian McHugh. Within two minutes Dromahair got their first goal from a great pass from Robbie Cunningham to James Clancy who scored a great goal.

Three minutes later Dromahairs Jonathan Kelly scored their second goal despite Aughnasheelin keeper Keith Harvey getting a touch to the ball.  Martin Feeney for Dromahair scored a point followed by Aughnasheelins first point by Fintan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick added another point from a free on 15 minutes before Dromahair’s keeper Jack Burke made a great save to deny BrianÓgallagher a certainÓgoal on 17 minutes.

Dromahairs Martin Feeney went on the score three more points without reply while Aughnasheelins Fintan Fitzpatrick coverted a long range effort to leave Dromahair 2-06 to 0-03 at half time.

Martin Feeney opened the Scóring in the second half with a free for Dromahair and six minutes on Conor Cullen from AughnasheelinÓgot their first goal with a long range free which ended in the back of the goal. But within minutes Dromahairs Kyle Harte was fouled giving Cunningham the opportunity to score their third goal. Points from Feeney and McHugh followed with a goal apiece for Jonathan Kelly and James Clancy which saw Dromahair with an unbeatable lead.

Aughnasheelin did come back with a consolationÓgoal from Ellie Mwamba but Dromahair were too strong on the day and the final score was St Patricks Dromahair 5-09 Aughnasheelin 2-03.

Congratulations to Mohill who beat Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins in the Under 14 (15-a-side) Championship Final in Pairc Sean on Sunday evening last completing a League and Championship double inÓgreat style.

Mohill started very strong and the midfield pairing of Jamie Stenson & Keith Beirne were excellent for Mohill and they provided attack after attack while the likes of Jamie Cosgrove & RonanÓgordan proved to be very efficient in front of goal.

Ballinamore spent most of the game playing in defence trying to restrict the number of Scóring chances their opponents had with the result being Ballinamore found it very difficult to make Scóring opportunities.  Peter Reynolds & Kevin Mullen were among Ballinamores best performers but that was not enough to stem the seemingly continuous Mohill attacks that were being launched.

Mohill opened the Scóring with a free from Keith Beirne followed by a point by Ethan Harkin from play. Mohill extended their lead in the eight minute with a goal from Jamie Cosgrove who confidentlyn dispatched his shot past Ballinamore goalkeeper Darren Maxwell. After a seven minute scoreless period Mohill extended their lead with points from Keithn Beirne and RonanÓgordan.

With ten minutes remaining in the the half Ballinamore got their first point from a free taken by Peter Reynolds but Mohill replied with three points one from Jamie Cosgrove and two from Keith Beirne and two minutes to go in the first half Ballinamore got their first goal when Barry McGovern delivered a perfect diagonal pass into the path of Daire Murphy who dispatched his shot passed Cal Rawlinson and into the Mohill goal but unfortunately for Ballinamore, Mohill went up the other end of the pitch and RonanÓgordon lobbed the ball into the back of the Ballinamore,s goal giving Mohill their second goal ending the first half Mohill 2-07 Ballinamore 1-01.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first half and it was clear that Mohill would not relinquish their lead. Mohill extended their lead with two points from RonanÓgordon and with nine minutes to go RonanÓgot Mohills third goal.

Ballinamore kept working although the game was long over as a contest but were arguably the better team in the closing ten minutes. Kevin Mullen looked very lively and having got a point was fouled three minutes later when he went for goal and was awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Peter Reynolds.

Mohill completed the Scóring with a point from RonanÓgordon in the final minute to give them a final score of 3-11 to Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins 2-02.
