Eight long weeks after the start of the competition Leitrim will finally get to play their opening game in the All Ireland Series this Sunday against hot favourites Mayo.

This game has been on the minds of all football followers in Leitrim since the All Ireland Draw was made. After a good start to the League the Team were unfortunate in some cases to not come out on top against stiff opposition. Since the league there has been much anticipation in particular over the last few weeks as to the fitness of Leitrim players expecially that of Declan Maxwell. It is with some relief that at Tuesday nights training that the Team Manager Dessie Dolan declared Declan fit and has awarded him the No. 14 jersey. Mayo on the other hand received the news of a metatarsal injury to David Brady. This unfortunate injury comes at a bad time in the week leading into the Connacht Semifinal. The changes in personnel in both camps will make for a very interesting game on Sunday. Throw-in is at 3:30pm.

Leitrim Minors also face Mayo in the ESB Minor Football Championship Semi-final which is the curtain raiser to the Senior game. Team Manager Liam Higgins is very happy with the preparations and both the team and mentors are looking forward to the encounter. The Leitrim Minor team is expected to be announced tomorrow on this website. The Minor games throws-in at 1:45pm.

Patrons are advised to arrive early and to facilitate this the gates will open at 12:45pm. Any remaining tickets will be sold on the day from the official ticket offices at the main entrance.

Congratulations are in order to two Leitrim Men in Black who are making a presence at a provincial and national level.

Last Sunday Ray McBrien (Aughavas) refereed the Connacht Junior Final between Roscommon and Mayo in Ballyhaunis. Roscommon ran out eventual winners.

Frank Flynn (Aughawillan) was recently named as ?Best Developing Referee? by the National Referees? Committee. He was presented with this award by former GAA President Sean Kelly at a function in Croke Park.

Franks next assignment is a big one as he will take charge of the Tyrone V Louth All-Ireland Qualifier on Saturday at 3:30pm in Pairc Tailteann. This game will be live on RTE.

The Senior team may not have crossed the white line onto the field of play but at least two men are getting a chance to do their bit for the county. Well done to both Ray and Frank.

Connacht F?ile:
A total of ten Leitrim teams incorporating sixteen clubs took part in the Connacht F?ile on Saturday. This turned out to be a great occasion and a great experience for all of the teams that took part. Visiting the six girls host clubs in Leitrim during the afternoon, St Marys, Annaduff, Cloone, Aughavas, Fenagh and Kiltubrid have to be complimented on both the presentation of their facilities which were in perfect condition and their hospitality and organisation which was excellent. The non competitive nature of the games ensured some excellent football and enjoyment for all of the players. In particular the amalgamations that came together to facilitate this 15 a side tournament was a particular success story of the day. It was also very special for the clubs to have a visit from the president of Cumann Peil Gael na mBan, Geraldine Giles. Well done to all who made the day such a success

County Round Up:
The countdown to the Connacht semi final clash with Galway in three weeks time continues as Leitrim played a competitive challenge against Longford in Shroid on Sunday morning. The early action saw Leitrim play with a stiff breeze and helped Leitrim to an early lead. Maeve Quinn hit the first Leitrim goal as her 45 deceived the Longford keeper and hit the net. There was little between the teams throughout as two second half goals from man Ann Marie Cox penalty and Lorraine Brennan secured a 3.09 to 3.07 win for Leitrim. The team had to line out without the services of Sinead Brennan, Sinead Quinn and Eimear McGlade through injury in addition to Anna Conlan, Mairead Stenson and Michelle McNulty who are currently sitting the Leaving Cert exam. Leitrim: Emer Horan, Emer Kelly, Sharon Kerrigan, Camilla McDonagh, Teresa Mylott, Mary McKeon, Eilis Quinn, Maeve Quinn, Sarah McLoughlin, Naomi Faughnan, Lorraine Brennan, Erin Farrell, Clare Owens, Aoife Kelly, Ann Marie Cox. Subs Used at half time: Louise Loughlin, Phillipa Maguire, Lisa McGowan, Alanah Bohan, Amanda Sweeney and Carla Creegan. Next Sunday, the team will face a very strong test away to Laois who have been promoted to the top fight following a comprehensive Division 2 title win against Kildare.

9 a Side League:
It was a quiet weekend on the club scene with just 3 games played. The last scheduled round of the Intermediate 9 a side was played on Sunday morning with Annaduff defeating Bornacoola and St Marys defeating Ballinaglera. In the senior competition Mohill defeated Cloone. The finals of the Intermediale and Senior 9 a side are scheduled for 24th June, with the Junior Final due to be played on 23rd July.
