Wednesday, July 20th 2023, may prove to be a significant milestone in the more recent history of Leitrim Gaelic Games activities as Carrick Camogie Club played its first-ever match. A group of Under 12 Girls drawn together from the catchment area of Carrick Hurling Club have been practicing the skills of the game recently and this evening they played their first match, a challenge game with Boyle Camogie, The game was hosted at the excellent facilities of Carrick RFC and it was a most enjoyable evening for all the girls and indeed their coaches and parents. After a close encounter, in the true tradition of many underage challenge games, the result may have been a draw, but the real accomplishment and result was succeeding in fielding a team for the first time ever.

Onwards and upwards for this group of players and hopefully it’s the start of something that will flourish! Well done all!

It has been a roller coaster 28 years for Séamus and Caitríona Clarke at JP Clarke’s Saloon, Yonkers, New York, but the curtain has finally come down as Séamus and Caitríona have now retired from the business. A well-known hostelry for many Irish who have either visited New York, or have chosen the area to be their home over the best part of three decades, JP Calrke’s never failed in its efforts to extend a Céad Míle Failte to all comers.

Those of us associated with Leitrim GAA will have many fond memories of visits there over five trips to Gaelic Park to face New York in the Connacht SFC since 2003 and we were most diligently cared for on these visits, never wanting for anything. It was indeed appropriate that on our most recent trip in April, the team proudly wore the JP Clarke, New York, jerseys as Seamus and Caitríona’s five-year sponsorship deal edged towards its conclusion.

We wish to thank Séamus, Caitríona and staff for all their combined generosity and kindness shown towards us over the years and we wish them the very best in the next chapter of their lives.

Brendan Delaney left his role as GDA at the end of June to move back to Cork. We would like to thank Brendan for his dedication and commitment to the GDA role over the past two years and wish him every success in the future. He will be a serious loss to both our hurling panel and our clubs and Academies. We wish Brendan all the best for the future.

In recognition of his work with our academies, coaching and games presented Brendan with a Leitrim jersey, signed by all the academy players Brendan had coached during his time in Leitrim.

GAA and GPA collaborate for a campaign to tackle online abuse of players, referees, managers and officials

The Gaelic Athletic Association and the Gaelic Players’ Association have today launched a major new campaign that seeks to target and tackle the online social media abuse of players, referees, managers and officials.

The ‘In their Boots’ campaign is a series of specially commissioned videos which over the coming weeks will heighten awareness around the damage caused by vitriolic targeting and abuse of players, referees, managers and officials online in an effort to create a better online sideline.

Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said: “As members of the GAA it is up to us to insist on the type of culture that we want to exist, and the Association is adamant that it is one where respect is paramount.

“This campaign, produced in collaboration with the GPA, is a critically important initiative that targets the culture of online abuse and the use of social media to attack players, coaches, referees and officials.

“The campaign asks people who are trigger-happy to spew bile online to stop and think and put themselves in the boots of those they are looking to castigate. Our supporters are passionate and our games feed on that passion, but that passion must exist in a way that does not accept a culture where that is an excuse to target and abuse people on or offline.”

Tom Parsons, CEO of the GPA said: “Inter-county players know that criticism comes with the territory of playing the game at the highest level.  Criticism is part and parcel of the debates and conversations that are had the length and breadth of the country.  However, it is when criticism veers into abuse that we must draw a line.

“Social media and the online world can be a positive way of communicating and staying in touch but unfortunately, there are those who want to hijack it and use it to say things they would be very unlikely to say face to face.  This campaign asks supporters of our games to turn your back on those who share abuse and instead to be real supporters.  Real supporters get behind their teams in good times and bad.

“Let’s show other parts of our society how, in Gaelic games, we can critique, debate and even argue without getting drawn into personal attacks and abuse.”

Niamh Boyle, GAA Digital Manager, added: “We live in a digital world where so many people interact online, and it is a place of possibility. But it can be undermined and become detrimental when it is a place that is hijacked by those looking to target individuals after matches. It doesn’t stay on the pitch, it goes beyond the final whistle, coming home to families and friends. This is an issue that goes against what we hold dear in the GAA and sport. For referees, coaches, volunteers, and amateur players the vitriol that can be directed at them after matches is simply unacceptable and this campaign is about tackling that culture.

“The true value of our games is in the people involved and the culture around it, and this behaviour would not be accepted in the GAA community offline so it should not be tolerated online.”

Tommy Doyle, GPA Digital Media Manager added: “As part of my masters in digital marketing I looked at the whole area of online abuse of inter-county players.  Through this work and as a current player I know the negative impact it can have.  It was from here that this project emerged.  I am delighted to see it come to fruition and want to say thank you to Niamh Boyle and the team at the GAA for their partnership.

“I would encourage all of us in the Gaelic games’ community and more generally in Irish society to consider the language we use online and the material we share. “

In his address to Seanad Éireann last April, Uachtarán McCarthy sought the assistance of politicians and requested that they consider legislation that will make it harder for a culture of online abuse and the ability of individuals to anonymously wage personal attacks online to be permitted.

The GPA has proactively provided social media guidelines to players in recent years, encouraging positive online behaviour.  As role models, players know what they say and do has an impact far beyond just themselves.

The GAA/GPA ‘In their Boots’ campaign can be found on the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts of both bodies.

The content for the campaign was produced by the Fifty-Three Six Sports Marketing Agency.

The Late Hughie Smith.  (Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins GAA)

Members and supporters of the Club were saddened to hear, over the weekend, of the death of Hughie Smith in New York.

Hughie, was born in Corlough Co. Cavan and later lived in Ballynacargy in Co. Westmeath. He moved to Ballinamore in 1966 to serve as an apprentice carpenter with his cousin John Smith at the joinery shop in High St. He played minor for the club that year and graduated on to the Senior team in 1967 along with the likes of “Birdie” Burns and Brian McKiernan.

He went on to win 3-in-a-row Senior Championships in 1967, ’68 & ’69. He also won 5 league medals between 1967 & 1972 along with a further senior championship in 1972.

The 3-in-a-row team of the ‘60s embarked on an historic trip to New York and Boston in 1969, an occasion that will live long in the memory of those who were there.

Renowned as a versatile and stylish footballer, he played at both corner back and at centre half forward for the team. Hughie also represented Leitrim at senior level in both Gaelic Football and Hurling and won a senior club hurling championship with St. Brigids in 1971.

He was also part of the Park committee that undertook to build the new dressing rooms in 1971 and ’72.

There was also an interesting connection that developed later in Hughie’s life. In recent years, by coincidence, our senior men’s team started using the Ballynacargy GAA club pitch as a base to meet up for Championship training. Hughie was delighted to arrive one evening, while home from New York, to meet the Ballinamore players and let them know that the pitch was in fact built on land that was once owned by the Smith family.

A Funeral Mass will take place at Saint Barnabas Church, New York, on Saturday, July 8th, at 11:00am.

Hughie will be brought home to Ireland where he will repose at Smith’s Funeral Home in High St. before returning to his home in Ballynacargy for reposing, Mass & burial. Full details of times for the reposing and burial will be published in due course

Brón ar an mbás sé dubh ár gcroíse! The sad news came through this morning of the death of Paddy O’Connor after a long battle with illness. Paddy was for years the “Hurling man” in our midst. A native of Moneygall, technically in Offaly, but a proud Tipperary man when it came to hurling. Paddy promoted hurling in the Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins club for many years and his proudest sporting day was when the club won the Leitrim Senior Hurling Championship in 2015. Another great occasion was when they won an under 14 National Féile na nGael title.

Paddy was involved with Leitrim teams at county level also and he was Cathaoirleach of the Leitrim Hurling Board up until December last. At county level, his most memorable occasion was when Leitrim won the Lory Meagher Cup in 2019. Indeed, Paddy attended Leitrim’s matches in this year’s Lory Meagher Cup against Monaghan and Lancashire.

At club level, Paddy O’Connor filled many roles. He was Rúnaí of Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s club from 2002 to 2006 and he was coordinator of the club Lotto until the onset of Covid halted the Lotto.  Fear é a bhí an-spéis sa Ghaeilge aige freisin. The club would like to extend sympathy to Paddy’s wife, Marie, sons Tadhg and Kevin and daughter Carl and extended family.

Dia go deo leis.

LEITRIM 4-21   CARLOW 2-10
Leitrim maintained their 100% record in the Humphrey Kellegher Cup with facile victory at a sunny Carlow Training Centre yesterday. Leitrim led from pillar to post and their victory was never in doubt. After an initial period of pressure, Carlow converted from a placed ball to take an early lead but that was as good as it got for the Barrowsiders.
Leitrim kicked into gear over the next few minutes with early points from Conor Reynolds and Jack Attard to lead on 4 minutes. After a missed goal chance, Leitrim made amends very quickly over the next 5 minutes as they finished off 3 wonderful moves with goals through Jack Prior, Thomas Gunn and Ronan Fox. Carlow responded with another placed ball to leave Leitrim 9 points to the good after 15 minutes. The remainder of the opening period saw Leitrim tag on 6 more points through Sean Gaffney(2), Jack Attard(2), Conor Reynolds and Ronan Fox while Carlow added 3 of their own to leave the half-time score Leirim 3-8 Carlow 0-5.
Leitrim continued the 2nd half in much the same vane as the 1st. Senan McGowan, Jack Moolick and Sean Gaffney(2) stretched Leitrim’s lead before Carlow added 2 points of their own. Carlow then got through for their first goal but this was quickly cancelled out as Leitrim added points through Jack Prior, Jack Attard(2) and Senan McGowan.
Carlow got in for a 2nd goal in the 46th minute but again Leitrim responded with a wonderful 50-yard run by Jack Moolick that culminated in a clinical finish to the back of the Carlow net by the big midfielder. As the game reached an inevitable conclusion, 7 points were exchanged between the sides as Jack Attard, Conor Reynolds, Sean Gaffney and Jack Prior rounded off the scoring for a 2nd comprehensive victory in the Humphrey Kellegher Cup. With games to come against Fermanagh and Clare, Leitrim know one win may well be enough to propel them into the semi-final.
LEITRIM: Scott Kerr; John McGarry; Ronan Connolly; Charlie Slevin; Ultan McNulty; Rian Costello; Cillian McWeeney; Jack Moolick(1-1); Thomas Gunn(1-0); Gearoid Curley; Ronan Fox(1-1); Conor Reynolds(0-3); Sean Gaffney(0-6); Jack Prior(1-2); Jack Attard(0-6). Subs: Rhionn Gallagher; Senan McGowan(0-2); Shane Mayock
LEITRIM 6-18   LONGFORD 1-9
Leitrim U16s qualified for the Fr. Manning Cup semi-finals in some style with a comprehensive victory over a hitherto unbeaten Longford outfit. Aided by a number of returning U17 county players, Leitrim roared into action, blitzing Longford in the first quarter as they scored 2-6 without reply.
Leitrim attacked Longford from the throw-in and early points inside the first 3 minutes from Ruairi O’Rourke and Senan Bohan were quickly followed by goals from Gavin Gallagher and Kyle Russell within the following 3 minutes.  Leitrim then added 4 more points through Senan Bohan, Ruairi O’Rourke(2) and Sean Carolan Morris to round out the first quarter. Longford got their opening score of the game on 25 minutes and this was sandwiched between 4 further Leitrim scores from Sean Carolan Morris(a 45), Ruairi O’Rourke, Jack Kelly and Senan Bohan. This left the half-time score Leirim 2-10 and Longford 0-1.
Leitrim introduced a number of subs in the 2nd half but there was to be no comeback for Longford. Again Leitrim opened the half in whirlwind fashion adding 2-5 inside the first 15 minutes with 2 solitary replies from Longford. The Leitrim points came from Joey McBrien, Jack Kelly(2) and Ruairi O’Rourke(2) with Senan Bohan and Ruairi O’Rourke adding the goals. The final quarter proved to be Longford’s most productive as they added 1-6 to their tally. But not to be outdone Leitrim rounded off their scoring with a further 2-3 of their own with goals from Joey McBrien and Ruairi O’Rourke. Jack Kelly, Oisin Conlon and Ruairi O’Rourke added the last points of Leitrim’s total for an impressive win.
Leitrim will be buoyed by the fact that their squad has shown great depth in topping the group, at times playing games without a number of their U17 players. They will also realise that there will be tougher games ahead but the focus, for now, turns to preparing for a Fr. Manning Cup semi-final.
LEITRIM: Josh Sheridan; Oran Foley; Killian Mulvey; Luke Farrell; Peter Moran; Kyle Russell(1-0); Bailey McBride; Luke Fitzsimons; Cormac Moran; Gavin Gallagher(1-0); Senan Bohan(1-2); Sean Carolan Morris(0-2); Joey McBrien(1-1); Jack Kelly(0-4); Ruairi O’Rourke(2-8); Subs: Oisin Conlon(0-1); James Hughes; Tadhg Regan; Bobby Hanrahan; Aodh Gavin; Kevin Faughnan; Daire Shannon; Ben Harte.
