Underage – Congratulations to the Aughawillan National School team who won the Schools League Final last week after a very exciting game. Congratulations also to the St Brigid’s u15 team who beat Dromahair in the 13-a-side League Final. Score: St Brigid’s 1-17 Dromahair 3-5. Aughawillan GAA is represented by Patrick McGovern, Andrew McNiffe, Orán Flanagan & Oisin Conefrey.

St. Brigid’s u12 team are currently competing in the Cross-County League Competition. They were defeated in their opening game by Grattan Gaels, Longford. Score: St Brigid’s 7-5 Grattan Gaels 5-16. Next fixtures: Thursday 7th June, St Joseph’s v St Brigid’s at 7.30 in Aughavas; Monday 11th June, St Colmcille’s v St Brigid’s at 7.30 in McGee Park, Aughnacliffe.

Division 1 – Best of Luck to the Senior Team who play Gortletteragh in the Leagues this Sunday 3rd June in Gortletteragh at 12pm. All support welcome.

Underage – Best of Luck to Aughawillan NS in the Schools League Final against Largy, this Wednesday 30th May at 6pm in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada. Well done to the St. Brigid’s u15 team who beat Annaduff in the Semi-Final and now play Dromahair in the final. The u15 League Final will take place on Thursday 31st May at 7pm on Pairc Sean MacDiarmada. We ask that, if possible, to support both teams this week and see the Aughawillan stars of the future!

Club Lotto – Next draw will be held in Gorby’s on Wednesday 30th May. New Jackpot €2,600.

Dublin-Leitrim Cycle – A big thank you to all those who helped out with the collection on 25th & 26th of May. A special thank you also to Supervalu and Tesco for hosting the Collection. Aughawillan GAA Club Notes 22/05/2018

Thank you from Sponsored Race Coordinator – The Dublin Leitrim Sponsored Cycle on May 12th was a wonderful success and our adventure was blessed with perfect weather for cycling – a great achievement by all 24 participating cyclists. An important part of the whole event was the fundraising undertaken by the twenty designated cyclists. In this, we received very generous financial support and sponsorship from many individuals and companies for which we are exceedingly grateful. A list of the main sponsors is being compiled and will be published in due course. For now, we want to thank a lot of people who provided vital support and assistance over the course of the day from when we assembled in Castleknock GAA Grounds until we arrived in Aughawillan.

Firstly to our host Castleknock GAA club who kindly gave us access to their changing and bathroom facilities and provided hot teas and coffees. We would like to mention Mick Lynch & his wife Marion Paddy Hewson, Barry Egan, Niall O’Connell & Michael Feehily among others and particular mention and thanks to Seamus McKiernan & Thomas Quinn formerly of Aughawillan and members of Castleknock GAA Club for their assistance in every way. A big thanks to all the Aughawillan supporters, Ciaran Kilkenny Castleknock & Dublin Footballer, Declan Darcy formerly Aughawillan & Leitrim footballer  & Dublin selector who all came out early on Saturday morning to see us off.

Thanks also to Mairead O’Flaherty Quinn for registering the cyclists and taking photos.

There is no doubt that the key to our success and safety was down to the tremendous assistance and advice we received from the Garda traffic corps in Castleknock. Sincere thanks to Garda Inspector Joe Bergin and Garda Sergeant Joe Delaney for organising and providing a Garda car and motorcycle escort from Castleknock to Fairyhouse. Particular thanks to the motorcycle outriders Paul McGovern & Paul Doonan. Also a special thanks to Garda Padraig Gorman for his help and assistance through Virginia.

There were a number of designated stops on the way. Thanks to the advance party – Charlie, AnnaMae & Niamh Kelly who had the drinks, fruit and snacks ready and waiting at each stop. Sincere thanks also to the proprietors of the premises where we stopped -Paul McCarty of  “Tara Na Ri” Pub which located just outside of Navan, Meabh Brady Lakeside Manor Virginia, & Marie Brady “The Shantully Inn” Crossdoney. A very special thanks to the following who sponsored the refreshments: Ollie Sutherland “Valeo Food Group” who provided the snack and energy bars, Micheal McGovern of “Supervalu Ballinamore” who provided the water and Willie McWeeney of “Fresh Today Ballinamore” who provided the Fruit. Thanks too to Jerome Quinn who sponsored the food in Virginia.

An important aspect of the whole journey was the support team: Ciaran McTague of QMT who provided the rear warning vehicle which followed behind the cyclists ably assisted by Christy Creamer the travelling bicycle mechanic. Marie Quinn who provided medical back up and Gene Maguire of Watercare Associates who provided the advance warning vehicle which drove ahead of the cyclists. In relation to bike servicing, spares and providing training a very special thanks to Tadgh Moran of “Morans Bike Shop Drumshanbo” who went out of his way to help and provide valuable advice to Christy and our cyclists. Thanks too to Noel Gilheany for managing the cyclists on the road.

Our arrival in Aughawillan was overwhelming and the welcome the cyclists received was unbelievable.  Thanks all those involved in organising the welcoming home party, particularly Paul Bohan Snr. for ensuring everything looked spick and spam, Donal Quinn and the social committee, the club officers who organised the meal and Gallogly Caterers for providing the food. Special thanks, to all the supporters and friends who came out to greet the cyclists on their arrival home. Indeed a number of those who were in Castleknock at start including Seamus McKiernan and Frank Darcy were also there at the finish!

The evening concluded with a great get together organised by the club in Jackie’s Ballinamore where cyclists and supporters recalled and savoured the day’s events.

An event of this magnitude could not happen without the help and cooperation of a great number of people some of whom may not even be mentioned in this summary. It would not have happened without the acceptance and willingness of all the cyclists involved to take on the task in the first instance. I want to thank all our cyclists individually and collectively for doing so. Thanks to those cyclists from outside the club who came along in support: Mick Quinn-Sean O‘Heslins Ballinamore, Padraig Holohan- Drumreilly GAA, Pat Martin Corlough GAA. Thanks also to all our former club players living away from home who participated. To Eilis Quinn Culligan the only girl – who stepped in to cycle on behalf of her injured father Seamus and who to everyone’s astonishment also completed the cycle. Finally special thanks to Kenneth Darcy, who completed the cycle on behalf of his brother Declan, who was unavailable to cycle on the day and our own Paul Gaffney who completed as part of the support team.

Westlink Coaches Under 15 – Well done to St Brigid’s u15 team who recently defeated Kiltubrid and Melvin  Gaels this week, Score: St Brigid’s 3-16 Kiltubrid 4-9. St Brigid’s 9-12 Melvin Gaels 1-4. They are now in the League Semi-Final this Thursday, 24th May. They play Annaduff at 7.30pm in Aughnasheelin. All support appreciated!

Dublin-Leitrim Cycle – There is still an opportunity to contribute to the Dublin-Leitrim cycle that took place on May 12th. The clothes collection being run by Pat Joe McNiffe is continuing until the end of the month. All clothes, shoes, wellies, boots & curtains can be accepted, but duvets or pillows, and can be dropped up to the McNiffe house at any time. There will also be a collection outside Tesco & Supervalu this Friday & Saturday, May 25th & 26th. We ask, if possible, to support the final fundraising events for the cycle which was a great success.
Polling Station – Aughawillan GAA Clubrooms will host the polling station for the area this Friday 25th May. This will mean the Main Clubroom will be out of bounds to Club Members during the voting day.

Aughawillan GAA Club Notes 17/05/2018

Dublin – Aughawillan Sponsored Cycle – Last Saturday, our 20 cyclists plus support team travelled from Castleknock to Aughawillan, 150km in total to raise funds to develop and upgrade the playing surface of the main pitch. This 8.5 hour journey took them through Dunshaughlin, Navan, Kells, Virginia, Cavan, Killeshandra, Newtowngore and Ballinamore, before arriving back to Aughawillan GAA club, where they were greeted by a large crowd of family, friends & supporters to congratulate them. A massive thank you to all those who were at the field to welcome the cyclists back to Aughawillan, the supporters who came out along the way to encourage the cyclists and everyone who sent them off in style in Castleknock that morning. A mention also to the support team who travelled with the cyclists – Gene and Eugene Maguire who led the crew along the way, the medic Marie Quinn, the mechanic Christy Creamer and Ciaran McTague who was also on hand, Charlie, AnnaMay and Niamh Kelly who were at the stops along the route to provide snacks and water for the cyclists and Donal Quinn & Gallogy Catering who were at Aughawillan pitch to provide refreshments after the cycle. The cyclists along with family & friends gathered in Jackies’ bar later that evening to celebrate their achievement and have a few well-earned refreshments!

Westlink Coaches Under 15 League – Well done to the St Brigid’s u15 team who got the League off to a winning start with a win over Drumkeeran. Score: Drumkeeran 3 points St Brigid’s 7-17. They now play Fenagh-St Cailins on Thursday 3rd May at 7.30 in Fenagh & play Annaduff on Monday 7th May at 7.30, venue TBC.

Spring Clean – Thank you to all who contributed to the Spring Clean at the clubrooms last weekend.

New York – Leitrim begin the 2018 Championship this weekend in Gaelic Park, New York. There’s a weekend of activities for all making the trip, with the Senior game taking place on Sunday May 6th at 7.15pm (2.15GMT) & the Leitrim/Longford Maters will play a New York Selection on Saturday 5th at 7.30pm.
A number of our cyclists will be in New York for Leitrim’s opening Championship game and no doubt will be seeking the support of the Aughawillan and Leitrim Diaspora in New York. Best of Luck to all involved in both games, if you’re in the Big Apple send us in your pictures!

Dublin – Aughawillan Sponsored Cycle – There’s just 10 days to go to May 12th and the 150km cycle from Castleknock to Aughawillan. A big welcome to Eilis Quinn, Mick Quinn (Sean O’Heslins) and Padraig Holohan (Drumrielly) who are participating in a support role to our cycling team.

In the final weekend before the cycle, there are still some fundraising efforts. On bank holiday Monday, Noel Gilheany is hosting a Pizza evening at his house in Swanlinbar from 3pm. There will also be a raffle, with a top prize of Sunday lunch for two in McNean’s restaurant. You’re asked to confirm your attendance in advance. There will also be a collection outside Tesco & Supervalu Ballinamore, on May 4th & 5th.

Division 3 – Hard luck to the Junior team who were narrowly defeated by Fenagh. Score: Aughawillan 15 points Fenagh 1-14. They now play St Marys at home on Saturday April 21st at 7pm.

Championship 2018 – The Championship draw took place earlier this week in the Bush Hotel. We now know who we will be facing in the Championship later this year – Group 1: Mohill, Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins, Dromahair, Aughawillan, Drumrielly, Gortletteragh. Group 2: Glencar/Manorhamilton, St Mary’s, Bornacoola, Aughnasheelin, Allen Gaels, Melvin Gaels.

Congratulations – Well Done to the Brian & Mark Stringer and the Templeport U17 team who won the League last week.

A big welcome to Eilis Quinn, Mick Quinn (Sean O’Heslins) and Padraig Holohan (Drumrielly) who are participating in a support role to our cycling team.

Some of our cycling team will be participating in the Smuggler’s Ring of Cuilcagh cycle on Sunday April 22nd, starting from Blake’s Derrylin at 9am. For anyone wishing to join in, entry fee is €20 and is in aid of Autism N.I.

There has been a number of fundraising events over the past two weeks. The proceeds from the Whist Drive on April 10th was donated to the Dublin-Leitrim Cycle. We’d like to thank all those who came along on the night, as well as those who brought refreshments on the night & donated spot prizes- Pat Flanagan, Pat Stringer, Morgan Quinn and Christy & Bridie McGovern. Thanks, in particular to Cathal McBrien, the kitchen staff – Michelle Dolan, AnnaMay Kelly & Rachel Dolan and to the parish committee for their support.

On April 14th the Aughawillan Diaspora & Friends night out was held in Dublin and was well attended and enjoyed by all present. Congratulations to Castleknock who had a Championship win earlier in the evening and their mentors who were present on the night.

All welcome for an enjoyable social occasion for all.

Leitrim GAA Strategic Plan – Coiste Chontae Liatroma CLG is in the process of producing a Strategic Development Plan for the next three years.

As part of the consultation process, adult members of the GAA in Leitrim are being asked for their views under a number of headings. Aughawillan GAA Club Notes 06/04/2018

Division 1 –  Well done to the Senior Team who won their opening league game last Saturday against Ballinaglera. Score: Aughawillan 1-12 Ballinaglera 10 points. We also wish Ronan Maxwell a speedy recovery. They now play last year’s winners, Mohill, this Saturday in Aughawillan at 6.30pm. All support welcome!

U-13 – Well done to the U13 St Brigid’s team who defeated Drumkeeran last week with a score of 4-8 to 3-3. They are now due to play Gortletteragh in their final league game.

Club Lotto –  Next draw will be held in Shortt’s, Ballinamore on April 4th. New Jackpot €2,200.

Poker Classic – Thank you to all who supported the Poker Classic held on Good Friday, a great night was had by all. A special thanks to those who sponsored bottles of whiskey, brandy and those who provided refreshments for the occasion. Thanks to Pat Flanagan and Timmy Winters for organizing and running the event, Gene Maguire, Donal Quinn, Joan McBrien and Niamh Kelly for helping out on the night and to Shane Maguire and Supervalu for their contributions. Congratulations to the winners on the night – 1st: Paul Gaffney, 2nd: Pat Stringer, 3rd:  Francis Murray, 4th: John Prior, 5th: Cathal McBrien, 6th: Jim North.

Dublin – Aughawillan Sponsored Cycle – All our cyclists have been on their bikes preparing for the cycle, as well as fundraising and wish to thank all those who have sponsored them so far.

Dates for the Diary – Sat. 14th April – ‘Dublin Aughawillan Diaspora & Friends’ night out in The Ferryman in Dublin at 9pm. There will be members of the cycling team and the club executive present on the night. All welcome for an enjoyable social occasion for all. 

May Bank Holiday weekend – Noel Gilheany and Pat Flanagan are holding a 5km & 10km Walk & Run. Details to follow in the coming weeks. There will also be a bucket collection at Supervalu and Tesco with details of a Church Gate collection to follow.

Pat Joe McNiffe has also commenced a clothes collection to fundraise for the cycle. 

Donations can also now be made online using Klubfunder, the link can be found on our Facebook page. We appreciate any and all donations and sponsorship that can be made to the cyclists and we ask that you support and encourage all 20 cyclists in any way possible as they prepare for the event in May. Dunnes Bar Division 1 –  The league kicks off this Saturday, with Aughawillan having their first Division 1 game of the year against Ballinaglera in Aughawillan at 6.30pm. Come out and support the team at the start of the new year!

Cycle against Suicide May 6th – The 9th stage of the national ‘Cycle against Suicide’ runs from Carrick on Shannon to Mullingar and is 86km in length – this can be booked through the ‘Cycle against Suicide’ website. Donations can also now be made online using Klubfunder, the link can be found on our Facebook page. Allianz Leagues 2018 – It was a mixed weekend for the Leitrim county teams, with the hurlers losing the Division 3B final to Lancashire 1-25 to 1-18, and the footballers having a comprehensive win over Wicklow 2-15 to 10 points.

Thank you to the sponsors on the night – McDevitt’s Pharmacy, Pyramid Bookmakers, Tesco, Supervalu, Teresa Kennedy, Glenview, Fresh Today and Jackies’ Bar. Thanks also to Jackies’ for hosting the quiz, Gerard McGovern for the amplification and Damien Gilheany for doing MC duties on the night. A special thanks to all who attended and made the night a success, especially Tom and Mary Conerfry who travelled from Sligo. We hope an enjoyable night was had by all.

Referees Wanted – In order for the GAA and its games to survive, we need to recruit new referees. A special effort is been made to recruit new referees, so if you are interested or know of anybody interested please contact a member of the executive.

Allianz Leagues 2018 – Best of Luck to the Leitrim Hurlers in the Division 3B final versus Lancashire this Sunday 25th March at 12pm in Ballyconnell. Best of luck to the footballers who play Wicklow in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on Sunday 25th March at 2pm.
