Dunnes Bar ACL Division 1 –It was another fantastic performance by the senior lads on Saturday evening, playing in glorious conditions with a great crowd in attendance. This time the opponents were Gael na Meilge who as ever would prove to be a difficult hurdle to cross. Our opponents started well kicking the first three scores of the games, before Dean McGovern fisted our first point on 10 minutes, this was followed by a quick exchange of points to leave the score 0:2 to 0:4 in favour of the visitors. The next four scores went to us, the first from the impressive Peter Reynolds with a free and an excellent Bryan Leydon point to level the scores, followed again by Peter firing over a couple of frees before two unanswered scores from the visitors left the game tied on 0:6 to 0:6 Peter and Bryan again added a couple of points either side of a Gael na Meilge point to leave Ballinamore leading by one at the break by a score 0:8 to 0:7 The visitors again opened the scoring at the start of the second half to level the scores before Keelan McHugh grabbed an important goal to give us the lead, it was nip and tuck at this stage with first the visitors scoring followed by Luke with a free to leave the score 1:9  to 0:9 with 46 mins on the clock. The next score proved to be an important one with Mark McCrory adding a goal to increase the lead to 6 points, the visitors continued to push forward looking for goals and Denis Dolan made an excellent save to deny them before Mark McCrory rifled in another excellent goal to leave the scores 3:9 to 0:9. The visitors would claim the final two scores of the match to leave the final score Ballinamore 3:9 to Gael na Meilge 0:11. A  big well done to all the players who took to the field and a special well done to the young lads Mathew Morris and Cathal Flynn  who despite their young years put in a great performance when they came on as subs. Next up for the lads is an away match in Drumkeeran at 19:00 on Saturday.

New Referees – Good news for the club is that two club members have completed course for new referees. Darren Reynolds and Brian Beirne will be taking up the whistle at matches shortly. It is some time since anyone from the club has taken up refereeing. Go n-éirí go geal leis an mbeirt acu

U13 League – Our u13s were out on Monday night in the shield semi-final. After a great start with goals from Naoise and Paul, we were firmly in control with further points from Cathal McCarthy and Gavin Darcy pushing the score line to 3.4 to 1, but Droimahaire in typical fashion fought hard and after numerous well taken scores were within 6 at the break with a score line of 3.4 to 1.4. In the second half we started well and maintained possession but great defending and pressure from Dromahaire meant we couldn’t capitalise. Dromahaire pushed on deserving winners 6.10 to 3.6. Wishing them the best of luck in the final. Team: Darragh Gavin, Niel Sweeney, Mark Ahern, Cian McGovern, James King, Paul Honeyman (C) , Rian McManus, Tommy Smith, Gavin Darcy, Harry Prior, Naoise McManus, Kaylon Murray, Colum Gartland, Micheal

Sean Mc Gowan and Declan Bohan were those who received the Red Book treatment and we thank them and their families for their participation. The night would not have been possible without the huge range of guests who travelled from near and far. Thanks also to Lough Rynn for hosting the night, to those who performed on stage including the O’Neill School of Dancing, Shannon Healy, Bríd Sullivan and Rachel Mallon, and to the as ever incomparable Tommy Moran who filled the Eamon Andrew’s role with his usual aplomb. It was the third time in the last 5 years that Tommy has compered on our behalf – he is a true legend of both Leitrim and the GAA. To Martina Hackett and the Finance team who put so much effort into delivering a hugely professional night and finally to the sponsors of our raffle prizes for the halftime draw – winners were;  Siobhan Mulligan, Lorraine Bohan, Mary Faughnan, John Campbell, Alison Mc Keon, Deirdre Faughnan, Gerry Kilraine, Aoide Mallon, Rachel Mallon and Ivy Body.

Dunnes Bar Division 2 – The Senior team got their competitive season underway on Saturday last when Dromahair were the visitors to Dromod. The North Leitrim men were in control for most of the game and led by four points at halftime. In the second half, Bornacoola cut the gap to just two points midway through, and it looked like a tight finish was in store. However, a series of unanswered points ensured it was the visitors who would leave with the win, and despite a late Damian Moran goal for the Bors, Dromahair were worthy 0-15 to 1-8 victors. Team on duty was Conor Hackett, Damian Mc Guinness, Jason Conroy, Brian Duffy, Mervyn Howard, Conor Mc Cauley (0-1), David Mulligan, Alan Croghan, Gary Mc Closkey, Cian Mallon, Sean Mc Keon (0-2), Kevin Mulligan, Robert O Beirne, Damian Moran (1-4) and Ronan Mulligan. Subs used were: Ollie Vaughan (0-1), Liam Mulligan and Kevin Shanley. This Saturday we play Annaduff in Dromod at 6.30pm in our second league game in Division 2.

Ladies Football – The Bornacoola/St Marys girls played their second match of the 2018 League season on Sunday morning last as they made the long early morning trip to take on a strong Dromahair second team in picturesque Glencar. Following a most competitive match which swayed from end to end, it was the home side which took the spoils of victory with three points to spare at full time. Final score: Dromahair 4-9 Bornacoola/St Mary’s 5-3. The girls are out again on Sunday morning next as they host Aughawillan in Dromod at 11am. Bornacoola Orcas – Four years ago, former Bornacoola Footballer Derek DiggerMan Duignan, set up the Bornacoola Orcas touch Rugby team in Evan’s Head in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales (Australia). We’re delighted to report that the Orca’s won their first Grand Final last week wearing the Black and Amber with pride in the final. Unfortunately, the DiggerMan himself was unable to take the field for the big day, as an earlier Rugby injury meant he had not played enough games to be eligible for the final. As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same!! Well done to Derek and his team and we hope to see you back in Ireland soon.

First Aid – In conjunction with Leitrim Sports Partnership we plan to run a first aid course in Bornacoola clubhouse on this Saturday, 7th of April. There are a maximum of 10 places available. Barna Recycling U13’s – St Josephs U13s played two games during the past week. First up was Dromahaire in Aughavas on Tuesday evening. Our lads were very slow to get going in the first half and went in at halftime three points down. As the second half went on they raised their game considerably and ended up winning on a scoreline of 6-11 to 4-04. The final scoreline flattered our lads a little as it was only in the last seven or eight minutes that they pulled clear of a determined Dromahaire team. This win meant that if they could win the last regular league game that they would qualify for the league semi-final. Leitrim Gaels were our opponents in the final round game in Leitrim Village on Good Friday evening. This was a tightly fought encounter between two evenly matched sides. Leitrim Gaels had wind advantage in the first half and the St Josephs lads started the game very well but were unable to turn possession into scores and conceded a few scores just before the break to leave the halftime score Leitrim Gaels 1-3  St Joseph’s 0-2. A slow start to the second half saw Leitrim Gaels extend their lead before St Joseph’s exploded back into the game with a flurry of well-taken scores which saw our lads go in front for the first time. It was breathless, end to end football for the remainder of the game and by the time the referee blew the final whistle, Leitrim Gaels were victors by the minimum margin on a final scoreline of Leitrim Gaels 4-5 St Josephs 1-13. We now await results of other games to see if we may have done enough to reach the semi-finals. Congratulations to both teams on producing a thrilling game of football for the spectators present.

St Joseph’s squad for both games was Fionnan Harte, Ben Harte, Cian Nolan, Padraig Maguire, Jack Mc Intyre, Eanna Mc Namara, Kevin Doherty, Kalum Mc Loughlin, Liam Mc Intyre, Harry Wilson, Darren Shortt, Matthew Mc Cabe, Kian Mc Hugh, Joey Mc Brien, Gary Mitchell, Tommy Kearney, Conor Downes, Gavin Gallogly, Conor Shortt.

Dunnes Bar ACL Division 1 – It was a great start to the league for the seniors with a good performance against Leitrim Gaels on a beautiful evening in the Pairc. The lads were always in control despite the contentious early sending off of Shane Moran in the first half. With the reduction to 14, the lads continued to play some excellent football and led by a score of 0:7 to 0:4 at halftime. Ballinamore again started well in the second half and remained in control with some excellent long range shooting with Niall McGovern scoring a couple of wonderful points to help kill off the Gaels fight back. The final score was Ballinamore 0:13 Leitrim Gaels 0:11. Next up is Gaeil na Meilge on Saturday at 1830 in the Pairc.

New Referees – Good news for the club is that two club members have completed the course for new referees. Darren Reynolds and Brian Beirne will be taking up the whistle at matches shortly. It is some time since anyone from the club has taken up refereeing. Go n-éirí go geal leis an mbeirt acu

Barna Recycling U13 League – Our u13s were defeated on Thursday last by a much more experienced St Marys side. The game was even enough at halftime with the scoreline 2.2 to 3 in favour of the home side. The second half saw St Marys take control of the game, but fair play to our lads they never gave up and fought right to the end. A Few goal chances presented themselves but unfortunately for us we were unable to convert. It ended on a scoreline of 5.13 to 5, one which did not show a true reflection of the lads’ efforts.
