A Gentle Reminder of Operation transformation – Ireland Lights Up with the GAA is a national initiative to improve the health of the country through GAA clubs and communities across Ireland.  Carrigallen GAA is coming on board with Operation Transformation for Ireland Lights Up.

Every Thursday from the 17th January – 21st February 2019 our club will be open and lit up for you, your family and friends to come and walk between 7pm – 9pm. We want everyone to come and join for Ireland Lights Up 2019!

Connacht Scór na nÓg – Amelia Pajak sang beautifully in Claremorris on Sunday last in the Connacht Final. There were three excellent solo singers and any of the participants could have got through to the All-Ireland finals. Amelia may not have got the judges’ nod on Sunday but she was brilliant. A big thanks to her parents, mentors and Roisín Kennedy who organises all elements of Scór in Mohill. Anyone wishing to take part in Senior Scór should contact Roisín at 0872147350.

Operation Transformation – Dromahair Ladies and Mens GAA Clubs for the third year running are hosting Operation Transformation Dromahair 2019 commencing on Tuesday 15th January.

Once again this is a great opportunity after the Christmas festivities to get back into shape and to become more motivated in improving health and fitness levels and also its a great way of meeting new people. Over the past few years, we have had huge weight loss and seen fitness levels of participants improve significantly.

This programme will run for 7 weeks and is suitable from the complete beginner through to a more athletic person wanting to improve their fitness levels. Classes will be conducted under the supervision of Sue, David and Declan. This year’s Tuesday class will be a mixed class with BEGINNERS and ADVANCED programmes to suit your levels of fitness.

Club Awards – Our Club Awards for 2018 were presented recently after the St Stephen’s Day Charity Match.  Senior Player of the Year Emmet Mahon, Junior Player of the Year Shane Meehan and Club Person of the Year Barra MacThiarnan.  Well done to all the winners.
 
St Stephen’s Day Charity Match – Well done to all Players, Management and Supporters who turned out for our recent Annual St Stephen’s Day Charity Match.  Scores were a plenty with Tony Redican securing victory for the Highlanders with a neat Penalty despite the best efforts of the Lowlanders Pat McWeeney in Goals.  A Donation of over €800 was made to the Fund setup for the family of the late Gregor Zelais, Keshcarrigan.
Man in the Middle – Congrats to Derek and  Mary Moran, Drumcong on scooping the recent Aughnasheelin GAA Club Lotto just before Christmas.  Derek was the as ever obliging man in the middle for our recent St Stephen’s Day Charity Match.

GALA DINNER – Tickets are selling all the time for the club’s Gala Dinner on Saturday 2nd February 2019 in The Landmark Hotel. It will include a 4-course dinner and music by the ever-popular band Late Night Radio.

 LEITRIM – Well done to the Leitrim Senior team and management on a fantastic display of football against Mayo on Sunday last in the FBD League, while the penalties may not have gone our way, it was a great start to the year for every Leitrim supporter and we look forward to the year ahead.

 CARRICK HURLING – The much anticipated All Ireland Junior Hurling Club semi-final between Carrick Hurling and Castleblaney Hurling takes place on Sunday the 20th January in Cusack Park, Mullingar at 2pm. There are lots of dual players from our club so please make sure to get to Mullingar to support them. There is a bus going from the Swan Bar so call in and put your name down.

Leitrim GAA – Hard luck to Dean McGovern and the Leitrim team who put in a fantastic performance on Sunday against Mayo, the lads competed fantastically well and only a penalty shootout could deny them, we would like to wish the new manager and all the players the best of luck for 2019

‘Ireland Lights Up – The GAA, in partnership with RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, and supported by Healthy Ireland and Get Ireland Walking, hope to bring together communities across the 32 counties to enjoy healthy walks in the safe environs of their own GAA club. Do you want to get moving and active this New Year, but you have nowhere to go? Do you find it hard to find a safe and well-lit area to go for a walk during the dark winter months? Well, your local GAA club has the answer!

This is an initiative that helps to promote physical and mental health and is something that can be enjoyed by the whole family and will be launched this Sunday after mass in the pairc an ideal opportunity for a walk with friends and family where you can enjoy a chat and a bit of exercise at the same time, refreshments will be served in the club rooms afterwards and further details of the events over the coming weeks will be discussed, please note there is no charge for this event. .

All are welcome to come to this event, please spread the word.

AGM – Thanks to everyone that attended our annual AGM on the 29th of December which was held in the club rooms. We had 26 in attendance which was slightly down on the numbers from the previous year.

The majority of the current Executive Committee were re-elected to their existing roles with the exception of Scor Officer Brid Sullivan who stepped down to a role as Oilfigeach Cultur agus teanga, the club extended their thanks to Brid for the exceptional work she has done over the years in supporting the club. The club also welcomed a new member to the executive with Phillip Farrelly joining the Coiste to replace Jeanette Hart who stepped down from her role, we would like to thank Jeanette for all her hard work for the club especially for the tireless work she did behind the scenes for our club lotto and wish her well,

On the night Secretary, Patsy Connaughton, produced a detailed report on the Club’s activities and achievements in 2018. This was followed by a report by our Cisteoir John D’Arcy on the club’s current financial position. Micky Quinn then gave his Chairman’s address where he outlined the successes and challenges that we’d faced as a club throughout 2018 paying special mention to the hard work of all the

management, selectors and players of all the teams and wishing our outgoing senior management team of Paul Prior, Sean McCartin, Paddy Prior and Jason Kellett all the best for the future while also introducing and welcoming our new senior management team of Dominic Corrigan, Adrian Dockory and Adrian Smith.

We’d like to thank all outgoing members for their hard work and dedication to Sean O’Heslins and wish the 2019 Executive Committee all the best for the coming year.

1918 Leitrim Senior Champions  –  On Sunday eve December 30th we celebrated the winning of the Senior 1918 Championship.  We were honoured to have Monsignor Liam Kelly to give us a very interesting talk and look back to the 1918s and the happenings of that era, it was great to see such a big turn out of young and old – well done to the organising Committee of Barry McWeeney who acted as MC on the evening, Shirley Sammon, Peter Flynn and Stefan Hoare a lot of research was done and there were plenty of interesting articles available on the evening – On behalf of our Club I would like to congratulate Monsignor Liam on being appointed Diocesan Administrator on the announcement of the retirement of Bishop Leo O’Reilly  – thank you to all who baked the lovely goodies and to all involved.  Well done – a lovely social evening in our Community Centre.  We also had the presentation of Player of the Year Awards – Young Player Ciaran Cullen and Senior Player Barry McWeeney who were presented with their Awards by Club Chairperson Brendan Reynolds Comhghairdeas Ciaran and Barry.  We had lots of great entertainment from the Reynolds Family, our Senior Scor Ballad Group who represented their Club, County and Province in the All Ireland Scor in 2018, our young Set Dancers and Novelty Act who represent out Club and County at Connacht Scor on Sunday next – good luck to all involved.

Marriage  –  Comhghairdeas to Deborah Gilheaney and Philip McGourty who were married in Aughnasheelin on December 28th they have now returned to reside in Australia – best of luck for your future.

Comhghairdeas to Sean McWeeney who lined out with Leitrim on Sunday last against Mayo also Conor Cullen who was on the panel – this game went all the way to the wire with a draw at fulltime and made history by going to penalties which Mayo were winners.

Ballinamore Library’s Irish classes are regarded as being some of the most successful in the country with big numbers attending and a most entertaining atmosphere. The Conversation classes, or Ciorcail Comhrá, are now in their thirteenth year and are hugely popular every year.

Full range of classes will start in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 at 8.00pm. There are separate groups for relative beginners, for those who have some Irish and for those who are fluent. These classes are a great opportunity to practice the Irish you know and to improve it. Also, Leaving Cert or transitional year students will find it useful for practice for their Irish orals. Classes are free of charge and will run for 10 weeks to mid March. Starting next Tuesday at 8.00 in Ballinamore Library. Seo seans chun an Ghaeilge a labhairt. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Connacht Scór Na nÓg finals – Best wishes to Fionnuala Maxwell and her Set dancers – Anna Crossley, Caoimhe Mooney, Aobhlinn Maxwell, Ailíse Maxwell, Katie Faughnan, Eimear Healy, Claire and Laura Flannagan in the Connacht finals on Sunday next the 13th in Claremorris. AGM – The AGM to fill the vital roles of Chairman, Children’s officer and Development officer among others will reconvene on Sunday next the 13th at 3pm in the dressing rooms. It is vital that there is a good turnout for this meeting. All Players/members need to attend also any new people from our Parish from Dromod to Drumsna and all in between we would be delighted to see you.

Underage Presentation – The underage presentation of medals to the Under 13, 15 and 17 teams took place on Saturday last in the clubhouse. The medals were presented by Aidan Flynn and Colm Moreton. The under 12 team were runners-up in the Longford/Leitrim League. The under 13 team were runners-up in the 15 aside Championship after being unbeaten in the round robin stage. The under 15 team won the 15 a side Leauge Shield. The under 17 team won the 15 Division 1 Championship Shield Final. Well done to Donal Casey who received the Under 17 player of the year. Thanks for Marty Costello on supplying equipment for the night. Thanks to all those that helped make the night.

Coaches Meeting – Coaches meeting on Saturday 12th in the clubhouse for all coaches/mentors from Under 11’s up to discuss the year ahead, training, updates, membership and protocol. We are looking for all attend.

Membership – Membership is now due and there will be a membership evening on Saturday 19th in the clubhouse from 5-7pm. All members paid up before 31st March 2019 will have full voting rights. Carrick Hurling – Carrick Hurling all Ireland Club semi-final takes place on Sunday 20th in Mullingar. It would be great to see as many of our supporters to cheer the team on that has six players from Leitrim Gaels. Carrick Hurling has asked as many people in the area to put out flags in support of the team. Check Carrick Hurling Facebook for the availability of flags.

The Harte of the Matter GAA Night – Melvin Gaels big fundraising night on Saturday night next in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, “The Harte of the Matter”, will feature special guests, Mickey Harte, Aiden  O’Mahoney, Caroline Currid, Rory Gallagher and Brian Mc Eniff and others and will explore and delve into the GAA in the past, the present and the future. There will be a huge raffle which will include signed county jerseys from Leitrim, Donegal, Tyrone, Sligo, Kerry and much much more! While it’s a fundraiser for the community pitch and ongoing club costs it’s an event that any GAA fan may like to attend. Let’s all make this a night to remember for the town and the surrounding areas. The event will be hosted by Colin Regan.

Presentation of medals to the Melvin Gaels Under 20 County Championship winning team will take place on the night and any player due to get a medal is asked to contact Club Chairman, Liam Freeburn at 086 3882077 to arrange tickets at a reduced rate.

Tickets are, Adults €15, Under 16s €5 and are now on sale in McGowans Spar, Kinlough and at reception at The Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran.

Get Our Community Walking – Melvin Gaels Healthy Club Committee is joining up with Operation Transformation, the GAA and the Community, for Ireland Lights Up 2019. Every Thursday from January 17th to February 21st the track will be lit up from 7pm to 8pm and everyone of all ages is asked to come along and join in this free weekly event.

50/50 Draw Winners – The winners of the last two 50/50 draws were Patrick Mc Nulty, Rossinver who won €310 and Angela Connolly, Kinlough who won €284. Get your ticket now for this week’s draw.

New Development Project = Many people from the locality and further afield have supported the Community  Development Project at the Community Centre, Melvin Park and Dressing rooms, which is well underway. Any Kinlough people travelling home at Christmas will see that Melvin Park has changed a lot. The Committee is appealing to anyone who has yet to support the development to try to help, by joining the draw or sponsoring in any way.  A lot of money is needed to complete the project which will be very impressive when completed and will be a huge benefit to all the Community. The fundraising involves “Make Your Mark on Melvin Park” for €100 which will represent a square of Melvin Park, entry into a draw, prizes 5x €1000, and your name on a commemorative plaque.
