The Late John Tom Bland – Fenagh St Caillins Gaa Club President John Tom Bland was laid to rest on Friday last. He was a former player with distinction who lined out mainly in goals but also played throughout the field. Following his playing days he became a fervent supporter and could always to be relied on to provide words of encouragement etc. from the sidelines. He was honoured by the Club last October as a member of the Golden Jubilee Team Junior Championship winning team of 1967. He has served as a honorary President of the Club for the past number of years. We express our sincerest sympathies to his wife Frances, sons James and Dermot and to his extended family, neighbours and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm.

U13 Semi Final – Our lads had a brilliant week of football with two games in 4 days. First up was Fenagh, in a highly contested game in the firat half our lads really lifted the intensity and took over the game in the second half running out winners 5.10 to 1.11. That game seen the lads through to the semi finals where they met Drumkeeran in Drumkeeran on Monday. The game itself was a brilliant match, we lead all the way through the game but Drumkeeran never gave up and our lads held on by sheer grit and determination to book their place in the final. These young lads have put so much work into getting this far and are a credit to the club. They are such a young enthusiastic group that certainly deserve all the success they have had so far , so please get behind these young men and show your support in the final !!

Senior Championship – We played Allen Gaels in the 4th  Round in Ballinamore on Saturday eve – this game started at a fast pace with Allen Gaels on the Score board with the first 50 seconds and mins later they had a great chance to go 1 1 up with a penalty which was well saved by Gavin – we got off the mark with a point from Fintan Fitzpatrick – settled down and took control of the game playing some great football – scores followed with points from Ciaran Cullen Fintan Fitzpatrick Brendan Mulvey Conor Cullen and following a great pass from Conor Cullen Gavin Sammon finished to the net – the score board at half time read Achadh ná Síleann 1 10 Allen Gaels 4 points.  Second half again say some great football with scores coming from Fintan Fitzpatrick, Barry McWeeney, Conor Cullen – overall this was a very gutsy team performance with some great scoring – game  finished on a scoreline of 1 17 to 1 9 – which leaves us on 4 points with all to play for going into the last round when we play Melvin Gaels in 2 weeks time  – well done to all who played their part on Saturday eve – Gavin McWeeney, Paddy McManus, Paul Earley Cathal Eagan, Wayne Gilgunn, Christy McNulty, Kevin McWeeney, Sean McWeeney, Aaron Hoare, Barry McWeeney, Brendan Mulvey, , Ciaran Cullen, Ben McGirl, Fintan Fitzpatrick,Gavin Sammon , Subs Conor Cullen, Fergal Earley, Damien Gilheaney, Philip Dolan.

St Brigids U 13s had a hard fought win over Kiltubrid on Thursday eve last in Aughnasheelin -this was a very entertaining game of football with Kiltubrid the stronger team in the first half with the score at half time 2 2 to 2 pts – St Brigids came back out for the 2nd half raring to go and bit by bit racked up the scores with an early goal and got a 2nd goal near the end of full time to finish on a scoreline of 2 8 to 2 6 – well done to the young boys on both teams who served up some lovely football – St Brigids now play Gortletteragh.  The game against Gortletteragh took place on Monday eve another hard fought battle and St Brigids were very unlucky come out the wrong side of the scoreline 1 7 to 9 points – this is a great bunch of young lads some of them have a few more years at this grade so keep up the football boys well done to all involved and especially their trainers – Aughnasheelin boys involved Senan McTeigue, Thomas Gunn, Shane Gallagher, Francis McGirl, Tommy Reilly, Eoin Reynolds and Enda Reynolds, Cormac Moran, Ryan Tubman.

Summer Camp  –  Well done to all involved with the Summer Camp which again was very successful with a big no of children attending over the 2 days August 10th and 11th.

Club Draw – The Club Draw for August will take place this Saturday night in the Weir Lodge Rooskey – a great night promised and we hope to see you all there.

Junior B Championship – The Junior team sealed their place in the County Semi Final with an impressive 2-13 to 1-10 victory over Glencar/Manor in Páirc Seán on Sunday morning last. The Bornacoola victory was based on an excellent first half display, albeit it was Manor who took an early lead when they scored the first goal of the game after 12 minutes. The Bors hit back with an excellent individual goal from Anthony Mulligan and from then until half time dominated both possession and the scoring exchanges to lead by 1-13 to 1-4 at half time. Glencar/Manor were the better team in a second half during which the Bors would only score once – a crucial goal from the boot of Brian Conroy and it was this which ensured a semi-finial place next month. Team on duty was Conor Hackett, Tony Shanley, Seamus Mallon, Luke Jones, Robert O Beirne, Mervyn Howard, Gearoid Mulligan, Michael Duignan, Anthony Mulligan, Noel Mc Enroe, Shane Conroy, Roy Keenan, Brian Conroy, Liam Jones and Jonathan Duffy. Subs were Mark Mc Closkey, John, Shanley, Gerry Gearty and Kieran Campbell.

Senior Championship – Melvin Gaels provided the opposition in our penultimate group game in the Senior Championship in Páirc Seán on Saturday evening last and for long periods of the game the Bors gave as good as they got. The Gaels were the better team though and held a 0-8 to 0-3 lead before Bornacoola’s best period of the game came in the third quarter and at one stage they had brought the contest back to a 2 point game, 0-10 to 0-8 with only about 15 minutes remaining. However, the Gaels finished very strong, scoring three goals as the clock ticked down and ensuring a victory on a 3-14 to 0-10 scoreline. St Mary’s provide the opposition in our final group game on the weekend after next.

Minor Championship – Rinn Gaels played Glencar/Manorhamilton in the semi-final of the Division 2 Minor Championship in Gortletteragh on Monday August 20th and enjoyed a great 0-15 to 1-8 victory. Junior B Championship – Our Junior team got their Championship campaign off to a great start on Saturday evening last when they enjoyed an excellent victory over Dromahair in their first group game played in Drumshanbo. Dromahair started the brighter of the two sides and enjoyed a one point lead at half time, 1-5 to 1-4. However the Bors were a different prospect in the second half and once we registered our second goal, a victory was always on the cards. In the end, Dromahair only managed one second half point and the Bors recorded a heartening 2-9 to 1-6 victory. Our second group game will be against Glencar/Manorhamilton in Páirc Seán at 1.30pm on Sunday with a win needed to be sure of advancing to the next round.

All Ireland Hurling Final – Our club’s Galway contingent – headed by Noel Carr and Padraic Naughton – were left with little to celebrate after Limerick’s great victory on Sunday; it was a happier story though for Niall Riordan with his strong Limerick connections. It was also an amazing day for our own Jonathan Boyle who starred in the Linerick colours in the mini sevens half time game at the All Ireland final in Croke Park – it was an incredible honour for this fine young man and indeed for the Bornacoola club and to the best of our knowledge he is the first Bornacoola man to play a part on All Ireland hurling final day. Maith thú Johnathon.

Ladies Intermediate Championship – Bornacoola/St Mary’s played their third championship match on Saturday morning last against the competition favourites St Francis in Ballinamore and despite putting it up to the Allen Gaels/Ballinaglera combination for the hour, the girls were defeated on a 0-14 to 1-4 scoreline. They got off to a great start with Aisling Leahy finding the net in the early exchanges as she latched onto a ball over the top and it was very much an evenly matched contest for the remainder of the half with the score at the changeover 0-7 to 1-3. However, the greater physical strength of the winners was telling in the second period as they wore down our girls to run out worthy winners, having added seven points to their tally to a single reply. Next up for the ladies is the final round of the round robin on September 1st when they face Mohill.  On duty on Saturday last were: Kathy Butler, Cora McCauley, Jasmine Maye, Joanne McGushin, Hannah Reynolds, Lorraine Guckian, Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen, Sara Crowe, Aisling Leahy (1-4), Lauren Hackett, Sarah Reynolds, Kelly Howard, Lisa Guckian, Ellen Woods, Rachel McGarry, Isabelle Chandler and Hannah Bird.

Championship – On Sunday next the Smith’s Monumentals Leitrim Intermediate Championship resumes when Cloone and Aughavas go head to head in Pairc Shean ó Heslin Ballinamore at 12 noon. Not sure if it’s all ticket but it is sure to attract a huge crowd as those traditional rivals fight to make it to the business end of the Championship. Hopefully, we can build on the performance against Ballinaglera and collect two very valuable points in this encounter. Best of luck to team and management.

St. Francis Ladies – The ladies overcame St. Marys/Bornacoola on Saturday morning last in Ballinamore on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-04. We led 0-07 to 1-03 at the break but pulled away in the second half to qualify for the semi finals with a game to spare. Well done to Paul, Gareth & the squad.
