‘Ireland Lights Up – The GAA, in partnership with RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, and supported by Healthy Ireland and Get Ireland Walking, hope to bring together communities across the 32 counties to enjoy healthy walks in the safe environs of their own GAA club. Do you want to get moving and active this New Year, but you have nowhere to go? Do you find it hard to find a safe and well-lit area to go for a walk during the dark winter months? Well, your local GAA club has the answer!

This is an initiative that helps to promote physical and mental health and is something that can be enjoyed by the whole family and will be launched this Sunday after mass in the pairc an ideal opportunity for a walk with friends and family where you can enjoy a chat and a bit of exercise at the same time, refreshments will be served in the club rooms afterwards and further details of the events over the coming weeks will be discussed, please note there is no charge for this event. .

All are welcome to come to this event, please spread the word.

AGM – Thanks to everyone that attended our annual AGM on the 29th of December which was held in the club rooms. We had 26 in attendance which was slightly down on the numbers from the previous year.

The majority of the current Executive Committee were re-elected to their existing roles with the exception of Scor Officer Brid Sullivan who stepped down to a role as Oilfigeach Cultur agus teanga, the club extended their thanks to Brid for the exceptional work she has done over the years in supporting the club. The club also welcomed a new member to the executive with Phillip Farrelly joining the Coiste to replace Jeanette Hart who stepped down from her role, we would like to thank Jeanette for all her hard work for the club especially for the tireless work she did behind the scenes for our club lotto and wish her well,

On the night Secretary, Patsy Connaughton, produced a detailed report on the Club’s activities and achievements in 2018. This was followed by a report by our Cisteoir John D’Arcy on the club’s current financial position. Micky Quinn then gave his Chairman’s address where he outlined the successes and challenges that we’d faced as a club throughout 2018 paying special mention to the hard work of all the

management, selectors and players of all the teams and wishing our outgoing senior management team of Paul Prior, Sean McCartin, Paddy Prior and Jason Kellett all the best for the future while also introducing and welcoming our new senior management team of Dominic Corrigan, Adrian Dockory and Adrian Smith.

We’d like to thank all outgoing members for their hard work and dedication to Sean O’Heslins and wish the 2019 Executive Committee all the best for the coming year.

1918 Leitrim Senior Champions  –  On Sunday eve December 30th we celebrated the winning of the Senior 1918 Championship.  We were honoured to have Monsignor Liam Kelly to give us a very interesting talk and look back to the 1918s and the happenings of that era, it was great to see such a big turn out of young and old – well done to the organising Committee of Barry McWeeney who acted as MC on the evening, Shirley Sammon, Peter Flynn and Stefan Hoare a lot of research was done and there were plenty of interesting articles available on the evening – On behalf of our Club I would like to congratulate Monsignor Liam on being appointed Diocesan Administrator on the announcement of the retirement of Bishop Leo O’Reilly  – thank you to all who baked the lovely goodies and to all involved.  Well done – a lovely social evening in our Community Centre.  We also had the presentation of Player of the Year Awards – Young Player Ciaran Cullen and Senior Player Barry McWeeney who were presented with their Awards by Club Chairperson Brendan Reynolds Comhghairdeas Ciaran and Barry.  We had lots of great entertainment from the Reynolds Family, our Senior Scor Ballad Group who represented their Club, County and Province in the All Ireland Scor in 2018, our young Set Dancers and Novelty Act who represent out Club and County at Connacht Scor on Sunday next – good luck to all involved.

Marriage  –  Comhghairdeas to Deborah Gilheaney and Philip McGourty who were married in Aughnasheelin on December 28th they have now returned to reside in Australia – best of luck for your future.

Comhghairdeas to Sean McWeeney who lined out with Leitrim on Sunday last against Mayo also Conor Cullen who was on the panel – this game went all the way to the wire with a draw at fulltime and made history by going to penalties which Mayo were winners.

Operation Transformation walk is on Thursday, January 17th at 7 pm at our pitch – more information next week.

Ballinamore Library’s Irish classes are regarded as being some of the most successful in the country with big numbers attending and a most entertaining atmosphere. The Conversation classes, or Ciorcail Comhrá, are now in their thirteenth year and are hugely popular every year.

Full range of classes will start in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 at 8.00pm. There are separate groups for relative beginners, for those who have some Irish and for those who are fluent. These classes are a great opportunity to practice the Irish you know and to improve it. Also, Leaving Cert or transitional year students will find it useful for practice for their Irish orals. Classes are free of charge and will run for 10 weeks to mid March. Starting next Tuesday at 8.00 in Ballinamore Library. Seo seans chun an Ghaeilge a labhairt. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Connacht Scór Na nÓg finals – Best wishes to Fionnuala Maxwell and her Set dancers – Anna Crossley, Caoimhe Mooney, Aobhlinn Maxwell, Ailíse Maxwell, Katie Faughnan, Eimear Healy, Claire and Laura Flannagan in the Connacht finals on Sunday next the 13th in Claremorris. Also a special mention to Anna Crossley for training the girls and Eithne Fox for her assistance. They have done brilliant to date and we wish them every success.


AGM – The AGM to fill the vital roles of Chairman, Children’s officer and Development officer among others will reconvene on Sunday next the 13th at 3pm in the dressing rooms. It is vital that there is a good turnout for this meeting. All Players/members need to attend also any new people from our Parish from Dromod to Drumsna and all in between we would be delighted to see you.

Underage Presentation – The underage presentation of medals to the Under 13, 15 and 17 teams took place on Saturday last in the clubhouse. The medals were presented by Aidan Flynn and Colm Moreton. The under 12 team were runners-up in the Longford/Leitrim League. The under 13 team were runners-up in the 15 aside Championship after being unbeaten in the round robin stage. The under 15 team won the 15 a side Leauge Shield. The under 17 team won the 15 Division 1 Championship Shield Final. Well done to Donal Casey who received the Under 17 player of the year. Thanks for Marty Costello on supplying equipment for the night. Thanks to all those that helped make the night.

Coaches Meeting – Coaches meeting on Saturday 12th in the clubhouse for all coaches/mentors from Under 11’s up to discuss the year ahead, training, updates, membership and protocol. We are looking for all attend.

Membership – Membership is now due and there will be a membership evening on Saturday 19th in the clubhouse from 5-7pm. All members paid up before 31st March 2019 will have full voting rights. Adult Players €60, Under 13 up to Student Adult Player €40, Under 11 down €20 plus €2 per session. Familly (2 Adults and 2 Kids or more) €100. Non-Playing Adult €25.

National Draw – The National draw tickets are on sale locally from committee members, senior players and local Businesses. They cost €10 each with fantastic prizes. Leirim Gaels Community Field Lotto – There were 2 draws held in the last few weeks. On the 18th December, the Christmas draw was held in Donnellan’s. There was no Jackpot winner. Winners of €50 each were Isla Treacy Drumshanbo, Evelyn Doran Finisklin, Padraig Sweeney Drumshanbo and Eileen Murray Waterfront Apartments. Leitrim Community Facilities – The Leitrim Community facilities National Lottery Scheme draw for the paid-up members was held on 23rd December after Mass in St Joseph’s Centre. Leitrim Seniors – Leitrim senior team hard-fought game coming from 9 points down to finish level in the FBD league on Sunday last against mayo. They lost on 4-1 on a penalty competition to decide on the result. We wish our own club player Aidan Flynn a speedy recovery after his knock on Sunday.

Carrick Hurling – Carrick Hurling all Ireland Club semi-final takes place on Sunday 20th in Mullingar. It would be great to see as many of our supporters to cheer the team on that has six players from Leitrim Gaels. Carrick Hurling has asked as many people in the area to put out flags in support of the team. Check Carrick Hurling Facebook for the availability of flags.

The Harte of the Matter GAA Night – Melvin Gaels big fundraising night on Saturday night next in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, “The Harte of the Matter”, will feature special guests, Mickey Harte, Aiden  O’Mahoney, Caroline Currid, Rory Gallagher and Brian Mc Eniff and others and will explore and delve into the GAA in the past, the present and the future. There will be a huge raffle which will include signed county jerseys from Leitrim, Donegal, Tyrone, Sligo, Kerry and much much more! While it’s a fundraiser for the community pitch and ongoing club costs it’s an event that any GAA fan may like to attend. Let’s all make this a night to remember for the town and the surrounding areas. The event will be hosted by Colin Regan.

Presentation of medals to the Melvin Gaels Under 20 County Championship winning team will take place on the night and any player due to get a medal is asked to contact Club Chairman, Liam Freeburn at 086 3882077 to arrange tickets at a reduced rate.

Get Our Community Walking – Melvin Gaels Healthy Club Committee is joining up with Operation Transformation, the GAA and the Community, for Ireland Lights Up 2019. Every Thursday from January 17th to February 21st the track will be lit up from 7pm to 8pm and everyone of all ages is asked to come along and join in this free weekly event.

New Development Project = Many people from the locality and further afield have supported the Community  Development Project at the Community Centre, Melvin Park and Dressing rooms, which is well underway. Any Kinlough people travelling home at Christmas will see that Melvin Park has changed a lot. The Committee is appealing to anyone who has yet to support the development to try to help, by joining the draw or sponsoring in any way.  A lot of money is needed to complete the project which will be very impressive when completed and will be a huge benefit to all the Community. The fundraising involves “Make Your Mark on Melvin Park” for €100 which will represent a square of Melvin Park, entry into a draw, prizes 5x €1000, and your name on a commemorative plaque. Charity match – Thank you to everyone who supported our charity game on St Stephens day. €1650 was raised, with all proceeds going to SHOUT, the oncology ward at Sligo University Hospital. It was greatly appreciated.

Condolences – The club wishes to sympathise with the Mulvey Family, Ballinaglera, on the death of Brendan Mulvey, Ballinaglera and Dublin. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace.

Wedding Bells – Congratulations to Aileen Mulvey and Ollie McTiernan who got married on New Years Eve. We wish them a long life of health and happiness together.

New –  was certainly the theme for last Sundays FBD league at Advantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on Sunday last. We had a new season, a new format for the FBD League, new rules, a new Mayo Management team, a new Leitrim manager and a new management team, a new Leitrim Sponsor, and Leitrim sporting their New Jerseys. Well if new was the theme beforehand, extraordinary was the word on every body’s lips afterwards as Leitrim turned in a massive performance to draw level with a vastly experienced Mayo team. To cap matters off it became a historic occasion when we had for the first time a game in a recognised competition finished on penalties. What a day to remember. This was a great start to the year for the new manager and his backroom team and indeed for the players and with performances like this we can look forward to the year ahead. Well done to all involved.

Fund Raising Draw – Our annual fundraising draw will take place on Saturday 19th January in the Dugout.  Tickets are €20 each or a book of three for €50. 1st Prize €3,000, 2nd Prize €1,000 and 5 prizes of €100.  Tickets are available from all Club Officers. The annual fundraising tickets can also be purchased online – check out the Aughavas GAA Facebook page and follow the link. There is an opportunity for Tickets Sellers to drop back sold tickets on Friday 11th January & Saturday 12thJanuary to the Clubrooms between 9pm – 9.30pm.

Membership – Club membership is now due.  Our registration weekend will be held in February, due to new GDPR rules each member has to complete an application form.  Application forms can be got from Anna McKiernan 0877607026, Diane Charles 0860871550 or Ciaran Moran 0863686063. The membership Fees for 2019 are Adults/Senior Players €50, Students €25, Underage €20, Families €100, Gym Membership within Parish €50 Gym Membership outside parish €100.  All club players must have their membership paid by end of February.

Club Membership – The Allen Gaels GAA club registration night 2019 takes place in the Club House Friday night the 11th of January from 7-8.30pm. All players at every level must have membership paid before they are aloud to take to the field for training or games and unpaid members will not be aloud to gain entry to the club gym. Membership rates are as follows: family membership €100

25 Card Drive – The card game continues in Aras Padraig every Sunday night at 8:30pm. All welcome.

Sympathy – The Club extends deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brendan Mulvey formeraly of Ballinaglaera, who was laid to rest in Dublin last week.

Thank You – The Lynch family would like to thank everyone who helped out and supported the walk in memory of Lorraine on st. Stephens day. €3100 was raised and will be donated to Temple street childrens hospital foundation and Romeo Baginski.

New Year – The club would like to wish all their members, supporters, players and everyone in the area a happy and healthy new year.

Congrats – Congratulations to Claire and Dermott Mc Loughlin on the birth of their baby boy Padraig, also congratulations to Siobhan and Ciaran Ward on the birth of their baby boy Paudie.

Training – Training for the 2019 season starts next Sunday 13th at 11am. All available players are asked to attend as we are also fielding a second team this year. All players old, young and new are welcome. Division 2 league is a step up for us this year, so we need everyone to put in a big effort from the start. Best of luck to the players and management in the year ahead.

CFR Ireland – (Community First Responders Ireland). In Ireland 5,000 people die each year from cardiac arrest, 13 people everyday.  These people are going about their daily lives, at home, at work, shopping, at sports events and collapse and die without any warning. Eslin are setting up a Community First Responders and are looking for the support of the Eslin Community. Their is an information night on January 25th in Eslin Community Centre at 8.30pm. AGM – Our AGM was very well attended on Friday last in the Clubrooms. Most of the officers held their positions and all were complemented on their good work during 2018. Colm Conway remains as secretary and will have Orlaith Gordon to assist him for the coming term. Treasurer Lisa Boyle gave a detailed account of all transactions during the year, which showed the Club in a healthy state. Seamus Mitchell took over as Chairman from Padraig McLoughlin who bowed out after seven successful years at the helm. We congratulate Seamus on his new role and with good experience at Bord na nÓg level he will be well capable. We take this opportunity to thank Padraig for the great things he achieved during his tenure. As he said himself in his emotional address, there were highs and lows, plenty of success and a few disappointments but he always put the Club first. We thank Padraig and know he will be always on hand to help out.

Connacht Scór Final – We wish the best of luck to our very talented Amelia Pajak in the Connacht Finals on Sunday next in Claremorris, the Club is very proud of this young lady.

County Game – The County team started the New Year with a great display against Mayo, a team that would have visions of winning the All Ireland. Well done to Shane Quinn and Domhnaill Flynn our reps on Sunday last.

Bon Voyage – Safe journey back to Australia to Derek and Kelly Canning and family and Deirdre McDermott and husband Steve. They had a joyous Christmas with their families

Nollaig na mBan – We thank Spirit Bar for providing splendid and plentiful food for the Mohill Club ladies who held their annual Nollaig na mBan celebrations on Saturday night. A great night was had by all

Brian Mulvey – We extend deepest sympathy to St Mary’s on the untimely death of their stalwart member Brian Mulvey. Brian was the friendly face in Pairc Seán on the big days as head steward and was conspicuous by his absence on Sunday last. This PRO enjoyed his company in the Millennium Choir for many years. He will be sorely missed by his daughter Bronagh, his partner Geraldine and his brothers and sisters. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

Recent deaths – We extend deepest sympathy to the family of Peggy Ellis who passed away on Saturday last. Her two grand-children play underage for Mohill. Also condolences to Marie Walpole on the death of her brother JJ at the weekend. May they rest in peace.
