Mohill GAA Notes
Down Memory Lane
In this week’s trip down memory lane we fondly recall an historic day at underage level for the club as we go back to 1980,and remember the Under-12 Championship final of that particular year in which we defeated Glencar- Manor in Drumshanbo on a 0-5 to 0-3 scoreline following a classic encounter with everything that was good in Gaelic football on display, including high fielding, brilliant combination, and above all, fierce determination. This was our first ever County title in that particular grade since the competition was inaugurated in 1971. Our boys played with the wind in the opening half, and lead at the interval by the bare minimum of 0-3 to 0-2. Many felt that the North Leitrim boys would prevail in the 2nd half when aided by the wind, but our boys defended their lead resolutely with the contest finishing in a welter of excitement. Sole Marksman, George Dugdale, (though carrying an injury), Aidan McKeon who only left his sick bed a couple of hours before the game, and Gerry Costello were outstanding on the day, while John Reynolds, Eddie McGlynn, Cormac Rowley RIP. and Jimmy Stenson also played well. Our lineout on that historic day 44 years ago was as follows... Declan McDonald, Gerry Costello, Gerry Foy, David Sloane, Kieran Butler, John Reynolds, Cormac McManus, George Dugdale, Jimmy Reynolds rip, Aidan Mc Keon, Cormac Rowley, Eddie McGlynn, Jimmy Stenson. Subs. used were Peter Reynolds. Mattie Gaffey, Seamus Duignan, Padraig Cassells RIP, Kenny Rowley, Dermot Murphy. Cormac Murphy, Fergus Carroll, Peter McCrann, Enda Flynn, Marksman G. Dugdale 0-5. Sadly, you will note that three of the above have passed away, namely Jimmy Reynolds, Cormac Rowley and his great buddy Padraig Cassells.
Under-18 ( Minor)
Our Under-18 (Minor) team St. Manchan’s made it two wins from three starts in Division 3 of the under-18 League when they made the long treck to Kinlough on the Tuesday evening of last week, and came home victorious after a 7-012 to 3-9 triumph over the Home side Melvin Gaels despite lining out minus a number of regulars, including County Minors (Under-17) Ryan Gordon and Frankie McManus. This was a real team effort with everyone playing their part, not least John Macklin (still Under-16) who scored a noteworthy 4-3 of our total. Our lineout was as follows... Codey Tighe, Sam Bohan, Cillian Walpole, Eoghan McNamara, Tomàs Mayock, Michael Cunningham, Evan Kilrane, Keith McCaffrey, Kevin McNamara, Shane Mayock, Rian Walpole, Daniel Beirne, John Macklin.
Under-15
Our under-15 team made the short trip to Cornageeha on Thursday evening last where they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Home side Rinn-Gaels (Gortletteragh-Bornacoola) in round 5 of the Division 1League. The winners with the likes of Alex Kilrane (a lad with strong Mohill connections) Padraig Niblock, and Conor Quinn- Kelly running riot were home and hosed by halftime as they punished a lethargic first half effort from our depleted charges who are missing regulars such as Kevin Gallogly, Joey McGovern, and Conor Brennan. Our boys turned in a more spirited display in the second period, but on a dry, mild, calm evening, perfect for football they were always playing second violin to a more skillful, better balanced, and generally physically stronger Home side. Our lineout was as follows... Michael Macklin, Liam Reilly, kayden McKeon. John Mitchell, Jake Farren, Conor Reynolds, Conol Walpole, John Mee Ryan Sheehan, Jack Gilheaney, Diarmuid Higgins, Tom McManus, Tadhg Wynne, Nathan O’Donnell, Callum Kilcrann, Subs. used Ben Kavanagh, Alex Mitchell. Our sole Marksman was N. O’Donnell (O-2).

Our best wishes go to our Scòr and Cultural Officer Roìsìn Kennedy and her wonderful troop of dancers who will represent Club, County and Province in the All Ireland final in Rince Foirne (Figure dancing) in Killarney next Saturday for the second year running. Hopefully, they can go a step further this year by bringing home the proverbial bacon. Our dancing queens are Roìsìn Kennedy, Hannah Gaffey, Amy Cosgrove, Layla Murphy, Laura O’Neill, Ciara McCrann, Alanah McCrann and Ceidigh Heslin.
Spring League
Our Senior team despite lining out without such regulars as Keith Beirne and the Harkin twins as well as the Quinn brothers from the County panel completed their Spring League campaign with their unbeaten record firmly intact with five big wins from five starts to march into next Sundays final against Ballinamore Sean O’ O'Heslins following a 1-23 to 00-8 victory over Glencar-Manorhamilton at the Philly McGuinness Memorial Park on Saturday evening last. Our for stats make impressive reading at 142. On a perfect evening for football Eamon O’Hara’s charges despite lining out with only six of last year’s County Final team playing some lovely football again, and defending superbly during the opening half to lead at the interval by 1-14 to 0-6 (1-13 from play). While a number of Subs. were introduced after the interval it did not upset that rythem as we run out convincing winners. The only goal of the contest was straight out of the coaching manual. The ball was won by Eoghan Duignan who gave it to Tadhg Mulligan, who in turn sent a sublime pass into Mattie Murphy who delightfully and cleverly flicked it on to Domhmail Flynn who finished it to the net in style. This was a great team effort with 1 to15 and beyond all playing well. Keith Keegan lead the attack in style kicking five points in the opening half, while Captain on the day James Mitchell lead by example with a really fine display at Full-back. Fine performances were also turned in by Domhnail Flynn, Jordan Reynolds, and youngsters Matthew Murphy and Jack Rowley. Our lineout was as follows... padraig Tighe, Adam McGuinness, James Mitchell, Eoghan Duignan, Johnny Boyle David Mitchell, Donal Duignan, Oscar Reynolds, Domhnail Flynn, Tadhg Mulligan, Keith Keegan, Jack Rowley, Harry Boyle, Jordan Reynolds, Matthew Murphy. Subs. used Evan Kilrane, Senan Curran,(who kicked two great points after he came on),Ronan Gordon, Jamie Cosgrove, Cillian Walpole. Marksmen were D. Flynn 1-3, K. Keegan 0-5, J. Reynolds 0-4, J. Rowley 0-3, M. Murphy 0-3, S. Curran 0-2, 0. Reynolds 0-1, H.Boyle 0-1, T. Mulligan 0-1. However, next Sunday’s final against O’Heslin’s will be a true test of our credentials. Throw in time is 1pm in the park.
Reserve League Div. 2
Our third team picked up their first brace of points in the Division 2 Reserve League at the third time of asking courtesy of a 5-14 to 4-11 victory over Alan Gaels following a high scoring and entertaining contest played in ideal weather conditions on a perfect surface at the Shane Mc Gettigan grounds Drumshanbo on Sunday last. The scoreline however, only tells half the tale. Our lads looked comfortable at the interval going into the dressing room holding a commanding look 3-9 to 1-2 lead. The introduction of a couple of Subs. after the break certainly brought about a major transformation in the Home team as they hit us for 1-4 without reply during the opening 10 minutes of the second-half before Keith McCaffrey raised our first flag of the half with a 13th minute point. Nevertheless, the Gaels continued to pile on the pressure, and with our lads having lost their way and composure had drawn level with ten minutes to go before a superb individual goal by young Harry Boyle put us into the acendecy again, with McCaffrey following up with a brace of points. The Drumshanbo lads hit back with a goal and a point but our lads finished with a flourish, Sub. Conor (Francie) Beirne scoring a well taken point followed quickly by an Evan Kilrane goal after he received a sublime pass from Johnny Boyle before another sub. Johnny Mulligan delivered the “coup de grace” with a simply gorgeous point in the dying moments of the contest. Star of the show was young Keith McCaffrey (still a minor) who was in sparkling form upfront accounting for 1-7 of our tally, while fellow under-18 Evan Kilrane weighed in with 2-1. Apart from our four cracking goals, highlights of the contest from a Mohillian viewpoint would have to include a wonderful first half point from young Senan Curran (eat your heart out David Clifford) and a fabulous high catch from Johnny Mulligan. Our lineout was as follows Ciaran Baxter, Daniel Scott, Nathan Conboy, Shane Kilrane, Donal Duignan, Johnny Boyle, Tomàs Mayock, Jack Rowley, Adam McGuinness, Evan Kilrane, Jamie Cosgrove, Cillian Walpole, Senan Curran, Harry Boyle,Keith McCaffrey. Subs. used Johnny Mulligan, Daragh Gordon (looking fit after his year away in Australia), Kephas Reilly, Conor Beirne. Marksman 9 K McCaffrey 1-7, E Kilrane 2- 1, J Cosgrove 1-1, H Boyle 1-0, S Curran 0-2. D.Duignan 0-1, C Beirne 0-1,J Mulligan 0-1. Interesting enough, the team on Sunday contained an uncle and nephew combination of long serving Corner-back Shane (Poocher) Kilrane and rising star Evan Kilrane.
County Under-16 team
For the second week in a row our Club grounds the Philly McGuinness Memorial Park hosted an Inter County underage game on Saturday last in near perfect conditions. Our County Under-16 team began their Fr. Manning cup campaign with a 5-6 to 1-8 victory over Offaly. The Club have two Reps. on the panel this year, namely Shane Mayock who was a Sub. on the day and Frankie McManus who unfortunately was unable to line out due to an ankle injury.
Tailteann Cup
Best wishes to Clubmen Shane and Conor Quinn and their County teammates ahead of next Saturday’s Tailteann Cup clash with Waterford in Ballinamore. At this point we would like to congratulate our County Under-20 Hurling team who now find themselves in the All -Ireland C final following a convincing 3-14 to 0-7 victory over Fermanagh last weekend.
County Minor
Our County Minor team suffered their third defeat in the Connacht Minor Championship when losing out to a strong Mayo side in Castlebar on Friday evening last. Club player Ryan Gordon came on as a Sub. while another young Club player Frankie Mc Manus is also on the panel.
Failte Abhaile
At this point we say “Failte Abhaile” to Club player Daragh Gordon who returned home to Mohill last week following a year in the land of Oz, and was back in the thick of the action with our Juniors at the weekend.
