The Harte of the Matter – Melvin Gaels big fundraising night on Saturday January 12th in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, “The Harte of the Matter”, will feature special guests, Mickey Harte, Aiden O’Mahoney, Caroline Currid, Rory Gallagher and Brian Mc Eniff and others and will explore and delve into the GAA in the past, the present and the future. There will be a huge raffle which will include signed county jerseys from Leitrim, Donegal, Tyrone, Sligo, Kerry and much much more! While it’s a fundraiser for the community pitch and ongoing club costs it’s an event that any GAA fan may like to attend. Let’s all make this a night to remember for the town and the surrounding areas. The event will be hosted by Colin Regan. Presentation of medals to the Melvin Gaels Under 20 County Championship winning team will take place on the night and any player due to get a medal is asked to contact Club Chairman, Liam Freeburn at 086 3882077 to arrange tickets at a reduced rate. Tickets are, Adults €15, Under 16s €5 and are now on sale in McGowans Spar, Kinlough and at reception at The Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran.

New Senior Team Manager – The Club would like to congratulate James Phelan on his appointment as Senior Team Manager for 2019. James has a lot of experience at Club and county level and the Club wishes him every success in his appointment.

New Development Project Many people from the locality and further afield have supported the Community Development Project at the Community Centre, Melvin Park and Dressing rooms, which is well underway. Any Kinlough people travelling home at Christmas will see that Melvin Park has changed a lot. The Committee is appealing to anyone who has yet to support the development to try to help, by joining the draw or sponsoring in any way.  A lot of money is needed to complete the project which will be very impressive when completed and will be a huge benefit to all the Community. The fundraising involves “Make Your Mark on Melvin Park” for €100 which will represent a square of Melvin Park, entry into a draw, prizes 5x €1000, and your name on a commemorative plaque. Lights On- The lights will be on at the Training Pitch every evening from 4pm to 9pm as a Health Initiative so that the Community can make use of them on the dark evenings.

Season’s Greetings – We extend season’s greetings to all our club members, players, sponsors and supporters at home and abroad and we hope it is a very peaceful and happy time for everyone.  Special thanks to our friends in the media who continue to promote our club and in this regard we thank especially John Connolly, Willie Donnellan, Philip Rooney and all the staff in the Leitrim Observer who do a mighty job year in, year out promoting sport in Leitrim.

 5 in a Row Leitrim U16 Champions – Our U16 girls ended our club season on a high by capturing the Leitrim Ladies Championship 15aside title for an historic 5th time in a row in Cloone last Friday night. An absorbing first half of cracking football seen the sides go in level at the interval – Ballinamore SOH 2-6 to Glencar Manor’s 3-3. Manor were the dominant side in the second half and won the contest on a scoreline of 6-4 to 2-9. Joint captains Hannah Gallagher and Leah Fox were presented with the trophy by the Chairperson of Leitrim Ladies, Michelle Reynolds much to the delight of their teammates, mentors and supporters. Special thanks to their coaches Tommy Gallagher, Martin Johnston, Christina Loughlin and Dolores McCann for mentoring the team all season and for leading them to this historic victory. With weather conditions particularly difficult on a cold December night in Cloone, both teams must be complimented on serving up a very entertaining game of football while credit must also be attributed to the Cloone club whose pitch held up very well given the conditions.

 Club Christmas Table Quiz – We are hosting a Club Table Quiz in Gurns on Sunday December 30th at 9pm.  This is always a great opportunity to meet up with friends at home for Christmas.  €20 per table of 4 and as always your support would be greatly appreciated.

Club Academy – Santa will pay his annual visit to our club academy this Friday night in the Gym at St Clare’s Comprehensive School.  Families are asked to be in attendance by 7.20pm at the latest.

Match for Mark – The annual Match for Mark game between St Mary’s of Sligo and Glencar/Manorhamilton returns again this year on St Stephen’s Day.  Keep the date free, dust down the boots and see you in Kent Park for what has always been a great social occasion and opportunity to support a local charity in memory of St Mary’s and Glencar Manor’s former player Mark Rooney.  Details are being finalised and full fixture details will be issued shortly.

Sympathy – We offer heartfelt sympathy to the McGuinness family, Castle Street on the sad passing of Den McGuinness.  Den was involved in the first committee which set up our club in 1969, he subsequently held the position of Club Treasurer in 1970 and down through the years he was a great supporter of our fundraising activities and teams.  May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

Club Lotto – Our last Club Lotto took place in SuperValu on 11/12/18.  Numbers drawn 3, 4, 24, 28.  The jackpot was €4,675 and unfortunately there was no winner.  Five consolation prizes went to John Francis Rooney (Gortnaskeagh) – yearly ticket, Catherine Ahearne (Tawneymoyle), Michael Clancy (Skreeney), Patrick Coco McMorrow (Glenfarne), Mark McTernan (Killargue).  Many thanks to everybody who continues to support our Lotto.  Next Jackpot €4,750.

New Arrival – Hearty congrats to Oliver and Elaine McBride on the safe arrival of their baby son Ciarán recently.

Old Club Jerseys – We are looking for people to search out their wardrobes, garages and attics in search of old club jerseys which were used by our adult and juvenile football and hurling teams in the club (male and female) in the following decades – the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s.  They are needed for our 50th club celebrations.  Please contact Collette Fox asap on 0866020192 if you can assist.

Heinz Beans Tokens – We are asking our club members and all underage parents to collect Heinz Beans tokens. If we have enough tokens our underage boys and girls teams could benefit with sports kits. The closing date is the 15th February, 2019.

Ladies Club History – In preparation for our club’s 50th anniversary in 2019, the ladies club are looking to dig out all old photos, match programmes, newspaper clippings or any other club memorabilia to help prepare a detailed history of the history of the ladies club. Leitrim Community Facilities – The Leitrim Community Facilities National Lottery Scheme has completed another year and a draw will be held on after Mass on Sunday 23rd December in St Josephs Hall for all paid up members. There will 12 x €100 prizes, Committee members will call on those who pay cash or cheque for membership for the next 12 months. Any person who would like to join the scheme can contact Joseph Guckian or Willie Donnellan or any committee member. The cost is €10 per month. The scheme is run to raise funds to pay outstanding loans on Leitrim Gaels Community Field and St Joseph’s Centre. The total of the loan outstanding of approximately €95,000.

Merry Christmas – We wish all our members, supporters and sponsors a very happy and peaceful Christmas and prosperous new year. Many thanks to anyone who helped in the club over the past 12 months it is much appreciated and will hopefully continue into 2019.

Well Wishes – The club wishes of own Noeleen Geoghegan who has joined the county executive as assistant treasurer, best of luck to her in the role.

National Draw – The National draw tickets are on sale locally, they cost €10 each with fantastic prizes. This is one of our main Fundraising events and all proceeds goes towards the cost of running the club. We very much appreciate your support.

Underage Presentation – Underage presentation will take place first weekend January in the Clubhouse, exact date and time to be confirmed.

Membership – Membership is now due and there will be a registration weekend coming up. All members paid up before 31st March 2019 will have full voting rights.

Pitch Closure – The community field pitch and training area is closed until further notice to allow for maintenance work to be carried out..

5k Run/Walk – 5K Run/Walk in aid of the IHCPT on St Stephens Day, race starts at 12 sharp. Registration is from 10.30am to 11.40am at St Joseph’s Hall, Leitrim Village. The organising committee are looking for stewards to do marshalling on the day and volunteers for registration and timekeeping. All are welcome to participate.

Sympathy – The club wishes to extend their deepest sympathy to the Mc Nulty Family, Annabradican, Kilclare on the sad passing of Lizzie Jane. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

AGM – A well attended AGM took place last Friday 14th December.  Chairperson Emmet Mahon addressed the Meeting and spoke about the great progress made in 2018 with an eye to building on this progress in 2019.  Secretary Sheila Guckian detailed the busy year of Club Activities throughout 2018 on and off the field.  Out-going Treasurer Eoin Meehan delivered healthy Financial Accounts for both Club and Park Accounts for 2018.  Officers returned for 2019:  Chairperson Emmet Mahon, Secretary Sheila Guckian, Treasurer Dermot McKeon, Asst Treasurers Kevin Nealon & Eoin Meehan, Registrar Vincent Lee, Development & Insurance Officer PJ Meehan, Cultural Officer Maria Fallon, Park Bookings Kealen McKeon and IT Officer Eoin Meehan.
St Stephen’s Day Charity Match- Our Annual Charity Match will take place on Wed 26th Dec in Pairc Cill Tiobraid.  This is a great opportunity for all players past and present to burn off the Christmas Dinner Calories and raise money for a worthy cause.  Full details on the Match will be on Facebook and Twitter in the next few days.

Volleyball All-Ireland – Hard luck to Drumshanbo Vocactional School, as they were defeated by Loughrea College in the All-Ireland Senior Boy’s Final.  Kiltubrid were well represented on the team with Captain Diarmuid MacThiarnan, Sean McNabola, Barry McWeeney and Peter Winters.

Reconstruction of Drumkeerin GAA Club terraces – Expressions of interests are sought for the tender of the reconstruction of the terraces at Naomh Bríd GAA grounds in Drumkeerin. All tender documentation is available at Francis Davitt Planning, Main Street, Drumkeerin.  Close of applications will be at 4pm sharp on Friday the 25th of January 2019.

Sincere Thanks – Fenagh St Caillins GAA Club wishes to express our sincerest thanks to our successful 2018 senior management team of Declan Maguire, Niall Flynn, Frank Smith and Killian McLoughlin. Declan returned to the club at the start of the year and brought with him the determination, knowledge, and know-how which he instilled into a young team and led them to a rare Leitrim Championship title which this club has strived towards for over 40 years since its last one. Declan was ably assisted by Niall Flynn who is the definition of a great clubman who has given unselfishly of his time and expertise constantly for several years now and achieved his just rewards with this seasons victory. Thanks also to Frank and Killian who were always on hand to fine tune the squad with the wealth of experience they have both gained over successful careers with club and county. We wish Declan and his family all the best in their future endeavours and know that Niall, Frank and Killian will be on hand to assist this club to build stronger in the years to come.

St Caillin’s NS Christmas Carols – this annual event takes place on Thursday evening in St Mary’s Church, Foxfield at 7pm. The occasion will also mark the retirement of Mr Joe Reynolds as the Principal of our school. We would like to sincerely thank Joe for his great contribution to this football club by nurturing scores of present and future Fenagh St Caillin’s footballers as they passed through the school. He has also been involved in the management of our senior team during his term in Fenagh and for this we are very grateful. Everyone is invited to attend on Thursday.

SANTAS vs ELVES RETURNS DEC 26TH – Gortletteragh GAA grounds will again host the annual Santas vs Elves charity match on St Stephens Day. Last year’s match was a huge success raising over €1,700 for University Hospital Galway Oncology Unit. This year all proceeds will go to the Leitrim / West Cavan branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. Players of past and present are welcome to take sides in the battle and join in on the day. Throw in is at 2pm. Admission is optional. Everyone invited and encouraged to come along and show their support. Players interested in taking sides on the day get in touch with Darren or Terry.

AGM – The Club AGM was held last Thursday night and was well attended. Excellent reports were delivered by our secretary and treasurer and all sitting officers were returned to their positions for 2019. Lots of progress and initiatives planned for 2019 so keep up to date by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Congratulations – Congratulations to one of our stalwart forwards Conor Reynolds, Gortletteragh, and Fiona McLoughlin, Tavneena, Charleston, Co. Mayo, who were engaged last week. Conor has represented the club and indeed Leitrim at Minor and U21 level with distinction for many years and we all you the best in the preparations for your big day.

Key of the Door – Congratulations to another stalwart club player Conor Woods who celebrated his 21st in the Welcome Inn at the weekend. Many happy returns Conor.

Underage Medal Presentation – Monaghan GAA All Star Rory Beggan was on hand on Sunday evening to present our championship winning U15 and U13 teams with their medals. The U12 Cross Border Team also received their Plate Winners Medals on the night. Rory gave a brilliant talk on the evening and Santa even made an appearance to the delight of our younger supporters. Thanks to the coaching committee and everyone involved in the organising of the event.

U16 Ladies Championship Final – Hard luck to our U16’s who lost out on a scoreline of 2-9 to 6-4 against Glencar Manorhamilton on Friday night. The girls played some fantastic football in the first half especially but went in level at the break despite dominating the play for long spells. Against the wind, it proved a much tougher task in the second spell and Manor took full advantage to lift the cup for the fifth year in a row. Our girls did the club proud and had a brilliant season.

Ice Breakers – The Ice Breakers Christmas Swim takes place on Christmas Day at 1.30 pm SHARP at garadice lake. Why not come out and swim or join in the fun for NCBI and guide dogs for the blind. Cards available from Paddy O’Connor

Hurling – Indoor hurling is over until January. The Hurling club will have a meeting in early January and any parents and interested coaches will be invited, further details to follow

1918 Leitrim Senior Champions  –  On December 30th we will commemorate the 1918 Leitrim Senior Champions with an event in the community centre, events kick off at 6pm. Fr Liam Kelly will present a piece on life in the parish, county and country at the time. He will also unveil the members of the infamous team and those who managed the team to our only senior success to date. Some very important memorabilia from the time will also be on display in what promises to be very interesting event. Also on the night, we will have the announcement of the Senior and Young players of the year and some of our scor participants will provide some entertainment. To close out the day a video of the 1988 league final will be shown in the ‘The Bank’ in Ballinamore. Everyone welcome.
