Under 16 Fifty Year Reunion – The Fifty Year Reunion of Kiltubrid U-16 champions of 1967 and 1968 took place over the past weekend and a most enjoyable weekend was had by all. People travelled from the United States, England and many parts of Ireland to be present at the weekend events. It was a happy time for all the former players, some of whom had not met up in decades, and also for their families. The weekend celebrations started with Mass in St Brigid’s church in Drumcong, which was celebrated by Msgr Liam Kelly, for the deceased trainers and his former team mates who have died. Eleanor Shanley and Peter Farrell added greatly to the liturgy with their beautiful singing. It was followed by a group photograph and then a buffet meal in Cardiff’s where there was music and wonderful Sean Nós dancing by local children. Presentations were made to all the former players and also to the families of Tom Joe Mulvey, Noel Gilmartin, Eugene Leddy, Charles Egan and Peter Mulvey who are no longer with us. Presentations were also made to the family of the late Anselm Reynolds who trained the teams and to the family of Micheál Sweeney who assisted him. Also presentations were made to John Keaney and T.P. Keane who had helped with the teams back fifty years ago. Among those who spoke were Micheál Tighe, captain of the 1967 team, Francis Dwyer, captain of 1968 team, Peter Farrell, Seán Redican and Emmet Mahon, chairperson of the Kiltubrid GAA club.  On Saturday afternoon the group went on a tour of south Leitrim, enjoying the company and the chat and learning about some of the history of places that were part of all their early lives. Then there was a wonderful meal in the Lough Allen Hotel on Saturday night where the conversations continued late into the night. On Sunday afternoon they supported the present day Kiltubrid Intermediate and Junior teams who were in action with forty two players in all togged out representing their parish. It was a great weekend for both past and present Kiltubrid players and the future looks bright for the club which, in the words of T.S. Eliott ‘will take heart for the future remembering the past.’ The club is already planning for a bright future as they are fund-raising for an ambitious re-development of their club grounds. All in all a great weekend for the club and the parish!

Paddy RIP – Tuesday the 7th of August will be remembered by the people of Ballinamore as the day we heard of the passing of an icon, legend and possibly one of Leitrim greatest., ever players, a sporting genius akin to the Best, Ronaldo, Messi, Rock, Connolly and Cooper of their day.

As the news started to seep through the town and hinterland of Ballinamore, even though tinged with sadness it was an opportunity which was grasped by those that knew or saw Paddy to regale those that didn’t of his exploits, we heard of the scores, the individual and team accolades bestowed on him over the years, the skill he had, the matches he won, the legend grew and was passed on to a new generation.

Children asked parents and grand parents who paddy was and why he was the greatest, in a time when YouTube can be searched for every snippet it was a joy in a way to step back from technology and think for a moment about what those favourite moments were and to be able pass them onto those unfortunate not have seen the great man in action, a legend was reborn for those that had never seen him play.

It was evident on the night of Paddy’s removal that his was the case, young and old gathered from the pitch to the church to guard Paddy as he was making his final journey. There were club colours in attendance all along the route and not just O’Heslins. Our current players all too young to have seen the great man play stood sombre and proud as they walked from the pitch in a touching tribute to the great man, guarding the great forward as he made his last run. The cortege stopped at high street at Paddy’s bar and a touching tribute as his number 11 jersey hung proud in his former residence. The cortege moved on with current players, family and friends carrying Paddy as he made his way to the church where large crowds gathered to pay their respects to one of Ballinamore’s Greatest.

One’s passing is never the end, and nor will it be for Paddy as I am sure he will now be lacing up his boots for a game with some of those great men that have gone before and cracker I am sure it will be.

To Paddy’s family, friend and all that knew him, our deepest sympathies, Paddy may have passed but maybe a legend has been born.

However, the key score of the game arrived midway through the first half when Aughnasheelin grabbed a well worked goal and that was to prove a decisive cushion throughout the remainder of the game as the Aughnasheelin men went on to record a deserved 1-17 to 0-13 victory. Ladies Championship – Bornacoola/St Mary’s were back in action on Friday evening last as they took on Fenagh in their second match in the excellent Aughavas facilities. Having won their first match comfortably, this turned out to be a much more competitive affair with the girls eventually prevailing on a 1-10 to 1-5 final scoreline. Despite Sarah Reynolds hitting the back of the net in the very early stages, the Fenagh girls were not to be deterred and served their intent with some fine scores from play throughout the half. Indeed the first half was very evenly matched and a late penalty converted by the Fenagh ladies saw the teams enter the half-time interval on level terms 1-4 each. On the resumption, Bornacoola/St Marys played with renewed determination and greater pace and with the defence holding the opposition to a solitary point over the half hour, they added six points to their total to establish the match-winning margin after a highly competitive and enjoyable championship match played in an excellent spirit by both teams. Well done to the girls on their efforts so far in this championship season which have guaranteed a semi-final place with two group matches still remaining against St. Francis and Mohill later this month. On duty on Friday evening last were: Kathy Butler, Hannah Reynolds, Jasmine Maye, Joanne McGushin, Enya Guckian, Lorraine Guckian (0-1), Emily Reynolds, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen (0-1), Sara Crowe, Aisling Leahy (0-4), Rachel McGarry, Sarah Reynolds (1-0), Kelly Howard (0-4), Lisa Guckian, Hannah Farrell, Isabelle Chandler and Ellen Woods.

U12 GIRLS – Well done to our U12 girls’ team and management on retaining their county title on Monday in epic fashion.  Once again, the girls showed their never say die attitude and it paid off in the end, winning by the narrowest of margins.  This group of girls has come such a long way in such a very short space of time.  While each of the girls on the field worked tirelessly credit must also go to their equally dedicated teammates on the sideline who got behind the team from the very start to get them over the line. Hard luck to an excellent Manorhamilton team, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy as the teams couldn’t be separated in the group stages.  The final result was St. Mary’s 1.10, Manorhamilton 2.06.  Wishing Nicole Glancy who broke her wrist in a game last week a speedy recovery.  We hope to see Nicole back on the pitch playing again before too long.

The panel on the day was Emmanuella Olabiyi, Victoria Moore, Emily McGovern (0.01), Chloe Murphy, Kayleigh Earley, Mairead Lowe, Áine Morgan, Keelin Cronin (C), Emily Reynolds, Faith Lynott (0.01), Ellie Butler (1.03), Rebecca O’Neill (0.01), Ruby Lowe (0.01), Sarah Lowe (C) (0.01), Holly Corcoran, Nicole Glancy, Sarah McTiernan, Amber Hickey O’Flynn, Hannah Walsh, Micaela Gallagher (0.02), Hanora Brady, Holly Slevin, Caireann O’Grady, Caoimhe Doran, Chloe Costello, Lauren Deegan, Elodie Maye Gazzonet, Laura Faughnan, Tiffney Hughes, Urwah Imran, Mia Gately, Zara Cronin, Isabel Lowe
